Besides assisting these fugitives in escapement, other efforts included housing these slaves, recapturing them from authorities, and providing resources for the fugitives to settle in once freed. To further illustrate the metaphor of the underground railroad umbrella, “the homes and businesses where fugitives would rest and eat were called "stations" and "depots" and were run by "stationmasters," those who contributed money or goods were "stockholders," and the "conductor" was responsible for moving fugitives from one station to the next” (“The Underground Railroad”, n.d.). This network of systems continued on and as it became more widespread and more known about, the underground railroad found success in bringing the issue of slavery “to the forefront of public consciousness and convinced a substantial and growing segment of the northern population that the South’s peculiar institution was morally wrong and potentially dangerous to the American way of life” (Devine, 2011).

One such slave was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was One of the most well-known conductors of the Underground Railroad. She rescued over 300 slaves over the course of eleven years. Tubman was born a slave in the early 1820’s, originally named Araminta Harriet Ross until after marriage. When she was a slave, she endured the inhumanity of repeated lashings and beatings.

Many people who had lived in slavery saw no other way out. By using the Underground Railroad, many were able to escape and beat all odds. Unfortunately, not all escaping slaves made it to freedom. Many times, they were captured and returned to their owners. But they felt they needed to do try.

She was a heroic person doing heroic actions; saving people when her life depended on it. At one point, since Harriet was saving so many people, she was worth around $40,000. Yet Harriet was not taught math and science, in fact, she was an illiterate person, but she was smarter than the slave overseers and the masters.
