The Holocaust was a time of massive suffering for Jewish people. According to The National Holocaust Museum, 6 million Jewish people were killed in gas chambers, being shot, and being straight up murdered.[1] This was a time when Jewish people could have used someone like Frederick Douglass. When put in context, Frederick Douglass exhibited moral courage in a way that got African-Americans out of slavery. Moral courage, “is a good or altruistic action(s) in which the bearer of the action(s) is due to massive consequences if caught.”

The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass challenges and enhances information from the textbook America a Narrative History. In Chapter 13 of the textbook, the Second Great Awakening is mentioned, and the author talks about how large camp meetings were held, which resulted in many converting to Methodism. Similarly, Douglass, as his master attended one, mentions a camp meeting, where Douglass hoped his master would become kinder or emancipate his slaves, however, instead it made his master crueler. In addition, in Chapter 15 the conflict between a true Christian and a Southern Christian is brought up. In both the narrative and the textbook, the fact that slavery is endorsed by the bible is brought up as part of the pro-slavery movement.

Later on, America further develops with states, more slaves, and less freedom. No one really didn’t speak out about this issue until one man named Abraham Lincoln stepped up. He spoke out talking about how everyone is created equal no matter the skin color. Some people did really agree with Abraham Lincoln and rely on slaves for pretty much everything, like from cleaning to harvesting. That's when trouble starts to occur and America turns to two pieces of a whole.

When Douglass succeed to escape the folds of slavery , he began to climb a great ladder for leadership. In the year 1838 and the month of September, he was able to get his hands on the “identification papers of a free black sailor”. After landing in “ New Bedford, Massachusetts,” he became Frederick Douglass, a character in the epic poem The Lady in the Lake. Soon after obtaining freedom, he became a “world-famous abolitionist, author, and orator.”

The legendary abolitionist and orator Frederick Douglass was one of the most important social reformers of the nineteenth century. Being born into slavery on a Maryland Eastern Shore plantation to his mother, Harriet Bailey, and a white man, most likely Douglass’s first master was the starting point of his rise against the enslavement of African-Americans. Nearly 200 years after Douglass’s birth and 122 years after his death, The social activist’s name and accomplishments continue to inspire the progression of African-American youth in modern society. Frederick Douglass develops self-determination through the discovery of education and its pathway from slavery to freedom. Frederick already understood the physical brutality of slavery, but becomes aware of the mental brutality and the psychological control of withholding literacy. He looks at the situation with an analytical eye and is able to fight back with his sarcastic and ironic tone, referring to his masters as “pious.”

The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows the imbalance of power between slaves and their masters. In his book, Douglass proves that slavery is a destructive force not only to the slaves, but also for the slaveholders. “Poison of the irresponsible power” that masters have upon their slaves that are dehumanizing and shameless, have changed the masters themselves and their morality(Douglass 39). This amount of power and control in contact with one man breaks the kindest heart and the purest thoughts turning the person evil and corrupt. Douglass uses flashbacks that illustrate the emotions that declare the negative effects of slavery.

Introduction: During the 1800’s, Slavery was an immense problem in the United States. Slaves were people who were harshly forced to work against their will and were often deprived of their basic human rights. Forced marriages, child soldiers, and servants were all considered part of enslaved workers. As a consequence to the abolition people found guilty were severely punished by the law.

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is Frederick Douglass’s autobiography in which Douglass goes into detail about growing up as a slave and then escaping for a better life. During the early-to-mid 1800s, the period that this book was written, African-American slaves were no more than workers for their masters.
