Compare And Contrast The Virginians And The Confederation Government

In 1787, the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution to establish a new, stronger government for the United States. During George Washington’s presidency in the 1790s, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson argued over the role of the government as dictated by the Constitution. As a result, a two party system consisting of the Hamiltonian Federalists and the Jeffersonian Republicans emerged. To some extent, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson reflected the policies and beliefs of the Federalist Hamilton.

The meeting was to discuss improvements on the Articles of Confederation. It lead to them discarding the first document and creating the U.S. Constitution. The Virginia plan is a draft in the Article of Confederation, an proposal by James Madison. Because Virginia is such a large state, it needed 2 houses of the house of representatives to determined the proportions of the populations meaning there should only be House of Representatives with no Senate when it comes to decision making. On the other hand for the New Jersey Plan its the other way around, due to the smaller population of New Jersey, all representation where equal to other states. So for New Jersey plan there would be Senate but there wouldn't be any House of Representatives. To summarize the Virginia plan and the New Jersey plan, the Virginia would involve the House of Representatives but not Senate and for New Jersey plan

When making a national government, two plans were proposed, the New Jersey plan and the Virginia plan. The new Jersey plan proposed to have three branches (legislative, judicial, and executive), but the legislative branch would be elected by each state, regarding size. The judicial branch would be appointed by the executive branch, who would be appointed by the legislature. These factors are made considering New Jerseys size. At this time period, many states thought that that size and population meant a lot towards the national government.

It brought 5 states together to attend the Annapolis Convention. The Annapolis Convention was a meeting to address the problems of the Articles. Which made the Articles Congress see that revisions to the Articles of Confederation were necessary. The Articles Congress agreed and called for the Philadelphia Convention

The Virginia Plan was a huge part in forming the constitution we have today. Without it, we may not even have our government. Many others did not like the Virginia Plan because it would provide a too weak of a government. The Virginia Plan was brought in to the convention to revise and edit to form the basis of our government. It stated that there would be three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial.

During the revolutionary war congress felt that it needed a document to unite the states and set forth the principles and laws of the nation. Benjamin Franklin wrote the first draft of the articles to congress although it was never formally considered. It wasn’t until the 4th version of a draft was presented by John Dickinson, which congress began to feel closer to what they were looking for. After being revised three times, the document was approved to be submitted to the states in November 1777. All but one state, Maryland, agreed to the articles.

After the insurrection, known as Shays’ Rebellion, America showed a need for a stronger government. Franklin, as well as many other important men, were part of the Constitutional Convention. This convention would shape and form the Constitution of the United States, which is the foundation of our country’s laws. From September 1786 until May 1787, this convention would discuss and decide how our government should to be ruled. They worked out every detail in each of the three branches to ensure no branch had more power over the other (Bureau of Public Affairs).

The Great Compromise which was founded at the Constitutional Convention wasn't formed without trouble. Many of the delegates that participated in the convention were wealthy landowners and lawyers, who owned many slaves. They failed to notice the diversity that excited within the nation. As they talked how to repair the Articles of Confederation, issues would arise that would create continuous debates amongst each other. One of the issues that would arise would be the nature of the new government.

After deciding to write a new constitution, the delegates could not decide what new form the government should take. One of the options was the Virginia Plan created by Edmund Randolph and James Madison. The plan included a strong government with three branches (the legislative branch, The judicial branch, and the executive branch). In the Virginia Plan, the legislator would consist of two houses and seats would be awarded on the basis of the population. Due to the fact that the seats are awarded based on population, larger states would have more representatives than smaller states.

Madison’s Radical Agenda In Madison’s Radical Agenda by Joseph Ellis the thesis was how James Madison shaped the Constitutional Convention and formed the national government through the Virginia plan to what it now is today, and why he was successful. “Although James Madison was considered a wee man, he thought more profoundly about political problems than any other American,” (80). Many of the delegates at the Constitutional Convention only though they were there to make a few changes to the Articles of Confederation. Like the moderates, but Madison had something else in mind.

James Madison Summary The Virginia Plan was mainly geared toward the larger states and the New Jersey plan was geared toward the smaller plan. The Virginia Plan had the source of power coming from the people and proportional representation. The New Jersey Plan had the source of power coming from the states with equal representation.

However this idea was eventually scrapped and they wrote a whole new constitution. This constitution would protect America from tyranny, so they could keep a civilized and united country. The Constitution that was made helped defend America from almost all types of tyranny and is still helping us hundreds of years later. One way the Constitution prevented tyranny is by supporting Federalism.

In the creating of the US Constitution, the creators hit many roadblocks. It was difficult for the state delegates to decide on much, especially because they were biased and in favor of their own states. The New Jersey Plan and the Virginia Plan were two examples of the disagreement of representation within the states in the legislative branch. The New Jersey Plan was in favor of equal representation throughout the states. The Virginia Plan was in favor of population representation, meaning the larger states would have more representation than the smaller states.
