A hero is a person admired for his qualities or deeds. These individuals have impacted others by performing extraordinary acts. Every hero has left a legacy that has affected many lives in a positive way. When thinking of heroism, Louis Zamperini comes to mind for his courageous and selfless actions.

Contrary to popular culture, heroism is not all about gaining glory as is sometimes portrayed in the media. The performance of heroic acts not only benefit the people for whom they were performed, but also the individual who performed them. For example, Wesley Autrey risked his life to save a stranger in a New York subway station who had fallen on the tracks. Autrey recognized his heroism and growing fame, but did not boast it. Steve Hartman describes Wesley Autrey’s heroism saying “A hero only makes the news once.

The Underground Railroad was a secret network established in the United States during the early-to-mid 19th century. It was used by African-American slaves to escape into free states and Canada with help from ”conductors” and “stationmasters”. Slavery was a dark time in America’s past. Not only did slavery separate millions of families, it destroyed the white man’s reputation to African people. Many slave owners treated their slaves well, many did not.

An example of a well-known “hero” could be Hercules but a real hero is not necessarily a person with super human strength but someone who uses there mind and heart to change injustices in the world. Not only did he play a hero as Superman, he truly became one in his personal life. After becoming a quadriplegic Reeve became a spokesperson for people with spinal cord injuries. A hero is a person one admires because of the qualities and selfless actions they exemplify to overcome adversity and inspire others. Heroism is apparent in literature, history, and in our own life.

A Hero is brave when it comes to a dangerous situation. Abraham Lincoln helped ended slavery throughout the country.
