The second part of Pat Conroy’s book, The Lords of Discipline, discusses the positive and negative effects of cadre’s hazing upon the participants of the plebe system, particularly that of Bobby Bentley. Bentley is one of twelve people chosen as the target of the cadre’s Taming. Bentley best exhibits the positive and negative impacts of the plebe system due to his lengthy endurance of the Taming. On one hand, Bentley becomes the target of terrible violence and humiliation simply because of events that he cannot control such as his uncontrollable bladder.

In summation, just because the Greek system does not cause certain issues such as: binge drinking, sexual assault, eating disorders, classism, homophobia, racism, transphobia and other forms of discrimination does not mean that it does not create an environment that allows these issues to continue. Greek organizations have a long and illustrious history of discrimination; one cannot support such a system without ambivalence. There is something inherently wrong with a system that still produces numerous examples of dangerous, violent and prejudiced behavior. Although it is wrong to stereotype all Greek organizations as inducing this kind of behavior, we need to ask ourselves why it is happening at all. Whenever one of these horrible incidents is in the news, a Greek member is always quoted as claiming that it is an “isolated incident”.

Introduction Developing a plan to take schools in the right direction and improve our education system is easier said than done. The initial challenge is recognizing underlying problems keeping students from learning. This challenge, in part, is due to the fact that the issues may change significantly depending on who is labelling them, whether it is educators, parents, lawmakers and students. In this paper the writer will address bullying and how it challenges student, teachers, administrators, parents and the community at Lakewood Elementary School. In 2012 a bully incident ended up taking the life of a fourth grader at Lakewood Elementary.

Strip searches are unconstitutional in some cases due to the Fourth Amendment. Schools are not allowed to strip search any student in any circumstances, they have to leave it to a higher authority.

Although the actions of the students of the Sayreville hazing incident suggests that they thought and acted as adults, this incident of their high school careers should not be used to ruin their future in colleges and life. As most of the students who were involved in the hazing were minors, they could be tried in a juvenile court and have their records closed. According to the New York Times ‘s article on the matter, it stated “A conviction in adult court results in a criminal record, and generally, longer prison terms” (DOYNE). If the students were tried as adults, they could be faced with longer prison sentences and have a criminal record. But whether they are tried as adults or juveniles, teenagers convicted of sex crimes are required to register as sex offenders for at least 15 years (Michon).

In society and college campuses, sexual assault occurs quite frequently. According to an estimation one third of women experience a forced sexual experience at least once in their life and most of the time it occurs in colleges. Men have also been reported to be victim of sexual assaults mostly by other men. Most of the time the sexual assault is planned and perpetrated by a third person, who is known to the victim of incident. Drug and alcohol use play role in this issue and contribute to the problem as most of the time the victim and perpetrators are under the effect of alcohol or any other drug during the incident.

“While working at a hospital as a Registered nurse, I was being bullied every day at work I became withdrawn, severely depressed, I would break down and cry every day after work. It was a nightmare,” explained Nurse Jackie. Horizontal bullying should not be neglected it is a life-threatening problem affecting the healthcare. Nurse to nurse bullying in the workplace can have an impact on new nurses, the treatment of the patients, and lack of job satisfaction. Imagine being a nurse and additionally feeling nervous about taking care of a challenging patient or meticulously achieving all of the medical records.

However, whenever hazing involves assaulting the victim, then it goes to another level. A perfect example would be a 13-year-old Georgia student riding a school bus received a “wedgie” during a school hazing incident so painful that his mother took him to the emergency room. The boy was a member of the 2007 Charlton County High School junior varsity golf team. He was riding the bus along with varsity members, who held him upside down. According to a local new report, two older students called the boy to the back of the bus and, in addition to the wedgie, punched the 13-year-old in the groin and stomach — all as a part of an initiation ritual.

Bullying in Schools What seems fun and harmless for some students, is painful and degrading to others. Bullying has been a critical issue around schools, but before it was not as dangerous and know as it is now. These do not means bullying was not happening, it means it was not taken into consideration by parents or teachers. They thought it was just peer pressure or a kids game, and sooner or later the kids would be friends again. At one point, bullies think it’s normal to be mean and abusive to other students.

The numbers of bullied children are increasing as well as the victims, bullying don’t only affect the victims, but the bully’s and every one surrounding them (DecemberStone, n.d.). Bullying can affect the children personality, cases problems in the society, and it also gives a bad idea for the outsiders about our culture. Anyhow, it got to stop. We have to control bullying, and it have to start with those high school young people, even if its parent, teacher,

Schools with effective approaches educate their students on bullying, and create strict guidelines to follow with serious consequences if not followed. Granada Hills Charter High School has a strong anti-bullying policy, where students are required to adhere to a series of rules which strictly enforce bullying. Should a bully be present, the school enforces strict “disciplinary action if the bullying action negatively affects the school environment, the victim’s attendance, the victim’s feelings about him- or herself, and/or the learning experience” (Granada Hills Charter High School). If a student were to experience these effects, then the bully would be held to specific consequences such as counseling, detention, a parent-student dean conference, referral to school police with possible arrest, suspension, or recommendation for expulsion. The University of North Carolina conducted a systematic review of different anti-bullying policies, and concluded that “anti-bullying policies might be effective at reducing bullying if their content is based on evidence and sound theory and if they are implemented with a high level of fidelity” (Hall).

Bullying is defined as repeated oppression, physical or psychological of a less powerful individual by a more powerful individual, people or group. It consists of three main types of abuse which are physical, verbal and emotional. Bullying in schools is a common and worldwide spread problem that can have critical and negative implications on the general school climate as well as on the right of students to study in a safe and secure environment without fear. Many people believe that bullying is part of life, happens in all schools and so it’s not an issue to worry about and that it lets individuals know what life is all about as it toughens them but in reality bullying is a detrimental problem that affects most school going children and teenagers physically, emotionally and socially.
