Written by the main authors--Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman--on July 2, 1776, and signed by the 56 delegates of the Continental Congress, this document symbolizes and celebrates our freedom. Historians analyzed the Declaration of Independence in four significant sections: the statement of purpose, the contract theory of government, grievances, and the conclusions. The first portion of the Declaration of Independence states that colonies want Independence, and it is crucial, and no longer unavoidable. For a long time, the colonies have been together, but now the disrespectfulness and unfairness from Great Britain must end. The English settlers in the American colonies were acting as independent states well before the American Revolution took place in 1775. There are numerous examples when the English colonist decided to act on their own accord and sometimes disobey direct orders of the crown. Although the Declaration of Independence is now viewed as the official document that wholly released the United States from the political grasp of Great Britain, this was not the initial intended purpose of this document. In fact, at the time the first draft was written, the Colonists merely desired better treatment from the then supreme political power. Yet certain events inspired the American colonists to rethink their proposal for negotiation- events that led to revisions present in the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. As a means to ridicule Britain on its unjust principles, the Colonists imitated the British Declaration to expose Britain on its hypocritical views of equality. Therefore, it is easy to conclude that the American

The King often created salutary neglect towards the colonists because of the French and Indian war he was battling in and this caused Britain to become more relaxed on the Navigation Acts. 1. • Were the Colonists fighting for: It is important to establish that the colonists were a constituency of varied parties maintaining different interests. The colonial elite created a reconciliation and sustained a basic consensus regarding the general aims and concerns of the colonists. However, when met with friction, the elite’s alliance proved to be rather volatile; consequently, radical colonists emerged with much potency. For this reason it is unclear if there was a distinguished common goal amongst all of the groups within the colonies. I. The Newly formed government set out to make itself different from the British rulers. They wanted to form a representative government. They feel that they should, like the subjects in Great Britain, be allowed to decide if they get taxed or not. The colonists think that no taxes should be put on them unless they give consent to it through themselves or through a representative. They inform parliament that they cannot be part of the
Rebellion is the voice of the unsatisfied, the oppressed, and the messengers of change. The people of the United States want to separate from the British monarchy that controls them. In the Declaration of independence, Thomas Jefferson encourages the rebellion against King George and the pursuit of what the colonists have been denied for so many years. Jefferson believes that a rebellion is justifiable when an oppressive figure inhibits one from exercising one’s natural rights. Jefferson uses suffering-related diction and logical appeal to justify the defiance of restrictive government.
First, to understand the grievances of the Declaration of Independence we must also understand why it was created. Originally it was written to explain to the British Crown, as well as other foreign nations of whom it might be of interest, why the colonists wanted to separate from Great Britain. It listed many corrupt things that were taking place, the wrongdoings of the Crown, as well as what the colonists wanted to do in order to make all of them right once again. The Declaration states, “we hold these truths to be self-evident’ that all men are created equal…” This explains the idea of natural rights because the idea of natural rights mean that there are certain rights that shall not, and will not, be taken away from any man, by any man. The people are given rights at birth that can not be taken away. The document gives all the “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” as basic human rights.
