What is democracy? For a long time, historians have kept this question in mind while studying laws and methods of the Ancient Athenians. After investigating the given evidence, it can be determined Ancient Athens did not always vote on important matters and only a small majority of the population could vote. Because of this, Athens cannot be considered democratic. “The rule of the people” is the definition of Democracy.

The ancient people truly influenced our world today inventing the calendar we still use today and the idea of a democracy that the U.S.A uses in our daily lives. ( Doc. 1 ) Ancient Athenians used a type of democracy called direct democracy that is very similar to the United States representative democracy. Each citizen would have a say in everyday government. For example, when the people of ancient Greece were deciding the name of the city we now know as Athens, everyone had a vote whether to name the city after the goddess of wisdom, Athena, or the god of water, Poseidon. They obviously chose Athena as the name of the city is Athens.

The Ancient Greeks were affected in many ways by the things around and in the country called Greece. The geography of the land has had a great influence on Greece and the inhabitants. Throughout the history of Greece, there came more effects to the people who lived there. Some of these effects on the Ancient Greek civilization were positive and some were negative. Most of these effects were beneficial to the Greeks.

Without their ability to read and write, along with their location which allowed them to communicate with other diverse cultures, modern philosophers, mathematicians, and scientists would not have the records of ancient Greek philosophies. Of course, many other cultures from around the world have impacted modern philosophy in some way. However, they did not come into the situation until far later than the Greeks. This doesn’t make things easy for them, exactly, but, at the very least, that part of their life is taken care of. One of the many states of Greece, ancient Athens, was indeed not truly democratic as a result of not even using the essentials of democracy that is used today, “Thus, by our standards, it was oligarchy, not democracy.¨(Document D), therefore ancient Athens was not using democracy as their form of government, they were using oligarchy,another form of government in which a small group of people has power and control, as their form of government instead of democracy.

Greek influence is evident in modern day art, music, philosophy, religion, and many other aspects. As astounding as it may seem that traces of an ancient culture can last thousands of years, it is due to the rise and development of the Greeks and the conflicts that continued to develop and refine the civilization. In the democracy of our government and the paintings that hang in museums, Greek influence is a major part of modern culture. For example, the Greeks developed a form of democracy, which influenced the form of the American Government.

Ancient Greece was devided in two periods: Hellenistic and Classical Greece. The Hellenistic period covers the time of ancient Greek (Hellenic) history and Mediterranean history between the passing of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and the rise of the Roman Empire as connoted by the Battle of Actium in 31 BC and the consequent triumph of Ptolemaic Egypt the next year. Classical Greece was a time of around 200 years ( 5th and 4th centuries BC) in Greek culture. This Classical period saw the addition of quite a bit of cutting edge Greece by the Persian Empire and its resulting autonomy. Classical Greece affected the Roman Empire and on the establishments of western human advancement.

The Greeks took a huge step into entertainment. This step is still felt today. The whole reason we have olympics is because of the Greeks. There is way more to this story. The Greek theatre plays a huge role in our modern theatre.

Second, the rules were exercised directly by the people, whereas democracy today means government exercised by representatives of the people. Direct democracy has been made impossible by the size of modern nations. The Athenian democracy is criticized for being both more democratic and less democratic than democracy.
