he explores sexual inequality down to its very base. Engels published his book, based around much of Marx’s notes, titled “The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State” in 1884, one year after the death of Karl Marx. According to Engels “with the patriarchal family, we enter the field of written history”. With the advancement of agriculture and the domestication of farm animals, moving society from the hunter-gatherer ways, properties were soon developed. Men wished to have a means of lineage, now that they had something substantial worth passing on to their sons, so men became the primary individuals in the home as their strength and mobility in caring for their land was ‘superior’ to that of their female counterparts. Women son became slaves in the home as the men took control of the home situation also, women were degraded and demeaned. She would “become the slave of his lust and a mere instrument for the production of children” (Engels, pp, 120). He claims that inside this due, the man represents the bourgeois while the woman represents the proletariat. Many societies have different forms of this but fundamentally they are all quite similar, the women are subject to men within the marriage and outside the marriage. Monogamy developed in more detail, primarily for women, after the development of private property and lineage. All this so the man can be certain that he is the father of a certain child of a certain woman. The idealised image of a women in the 19th and 20th century was as stay at home mother, who cooked, cleaned, care for the children and fawned over her husband, who went out to work daily. Things have gradually been changing since the late 20th century, women have been gaining more rights as the century carries on. They have fought for the right to vote, to be able to own land, and are continuing to fight for equal pay in the workplace.
For decade women have been discriminated by society, all around the world. In many countries women are still treated as the inferior sex. “daily life for women in the early 1800s in Europe(Britain), was that of many obligations and few choices. Some even compare the conditions of women in time as a form of slavery.” (Smith, Kelley. "
“People in “polite society” demanded that ladies live under the guidance and protection of their fathers, husbands, or other male relatives. Women could not

During this time prior patriarchy it was told that women ruled over men. “ In the late nineteenth, some anthropologists popularized theory of human development to a period of matriarchal rule, followed by patriarchy” (Ruether 145). Friedrich Engels had claimed this theory and became part of Marxist thought. In this century many did not see it as a better world that we should return to. Some feminist people such as Matilda Joslyn Gage “picked up on the theme of original matriarchy, seeing it not as a primitive time, but a time of high culture in early egyptian and Near Eastern civilization, when women were in the ascendancy in family, religion, and society”
The next chapter highlights the gendered division of labor and the difficulty to keep a family as a slave. Chapter six and seven moves on to the eighteenth century and shows how women have improved in areas such as more political participation and increasing social class of
Since the earliest times in history, women were treated inferior to men. From birth, she would face constraints on her economic independence, legal identity, and access to her property. These restraints would narrow her choice of marriage or spinsterhood. Her economic dependency was ensured by her father or husband, and women were not permitted to own land (Berkin 4-6). After she wedded, all of a woman’s rights and property became that of her husband's (Berkin 5-6).
The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing. In life, there is a universal desire for oneness among people—we want to belong. It is why we collaborate, support common causes, cheer for sports teams, feel nationalism; it’s why we build villages, towns, and cities. Families are where we connect ourselves in relationships to past, current, and future generations. For many, family is not only a blessing, but our greatest accomplishment.
Families can be regarded as the foundation of society. For Fleetwood (2012: 1), the importance of families is highlighted by the fact that it would be difficult to comprehend a society that could function without them. In addition, even though families and their compositions vary across societies and cultures, the family can be viewed as a universal social institution (Macionis & Plummer, 2012: 625. Specifically, according to Macionis and Plummer (2012: 625) and Neale (2000:1), it has the ability to unite individuals into cooperative groups via social bonds (kinship) and is ultimately experienced differently from individual to individual. However, the family can be a source of conflict, tension and inequality, which is why one of the key practices
Families have many different ways they could be defined. I would describe my family as being blended. My brother has a different father than me, and he is still considered family. This aspect is important in my concept of family because even if I do not talk to them everyday, I still have this connection where they will support the decisions that I want to make even if it is not an opinion that everyone agrees with. On the contrary, there is definitely diversity by having a blended family, especially since they have been a part of most of my life.
Through the socialisation of children, the family reproduces both labour power and a false ideology which keeps the capitalists system going. ‘Families thus support the concentration of wealth and reproduce the class structure in each succeeding generation (Macionis and Plummer 2002:440). Engles indicated that families turn women into the sexual and economic property of men. Woman perform unpaid work in the home that would otherwise cost a lot to those who benefit from it. Conflict theorists have seen the family as a social arrangement benefiting men more than women, allowing men to maintain a position of power.
Marx and Pozdnyshev Decry Marriage The Catholic Church defines marriage as a covenant which by a man and a woman devote their entire lives to a mutual partnership. By its nature, marriage is ordered toward the good of the spouses, and has been elevated by Christ as a sacrament. (CCC 1601). In spite of the Church’s view on marriage, however, various writers such as Karl Marx and Leo Tolstoy have espoused a different position on the matter.
