Four Pillars Of The National Honor Society

The National Honor Society, NHS, was officially started by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921. It started in a Pittsburg high school, but quickly grew throughout the nation. NHS has maintained a long history of admitting exemplary students into the organization. NHS developed four main tenants that have helped guide the purpose, as Zeiger (n.d.) explained: "to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools". I have chosen to do the National Honors Society, because it helped me throughout my junior and senior years in high school.

The National Honors Society has been a constant but distant presence in my life ever since I was in middle school. Every once in awhile, teachers would mention our GPAs and tell us to keep them up if we wanted to be accepted into NHS, or they would attempt to coax us into behaving better by telling us that the National Honors Society frowned upon our current behavior. Back then, NHS was a prospective part of my future, and I didn’t worry too much about preparing. In my first two years of high school, I watched my fellow students in NHS work to keep up their grades up and to meet the volunteer requirements. I watched them and waited my turn to join them, because after learning what the National Honors Society really was and what it stood for,

It would be an honor to join the NHS. The National Honor Society is a notable organization that promotes high school students who reflect academic excellence, leadership, service, and character. Joining the NHS demonstrates to colleges, businesses, and the community that someone is serious about their education and making a difference in their community. I am a suitable candidate for the NHS because I demonstrate the qualities that the organization values and I am committed to use my abilities and skills for the success and growth of the community around us. I meet the academic requirements for the NHS membership as I currently have a 4.5 GPA for my first semester of high school.

The National Honor Society is a society created to assist students in becoming well-educated scholars and assist them through their journey in high school. I believe that I am well qualified and am very fitting to be inducted into the National Honor Society. These reasons are scholarship, leadership, service, and character which I will further explain throughout this essay. Scholarship is the area in which I take the most pride. I have first demonstrated scholarship by always working hard on my assignments.

The first of my short-term goals is to graduate high school as a participant in the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is a program high school students apply for and if they are accepted, gain multiple benefits from. Accepted students must have have high GPAs, multiple hours of community service, be considered strong leaders within their community and by their peers, and be of good character. It is my goal to become a member of this program because not only does it help with college applications, but it also challenges me to improve my strengths and weaknesses. More specifically, I’m wanting to it to push me to be more involved in the community resulting in improved leadership skills.

The National Honor Society is based off of four pillars; Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Scholarship is one of the most important pillars to me. Scholarship means not only doing well in school and getting good grades, but applying what I have learned and using it everyday. I know the importance of education and feel that I am a lifelong learner. I feel very fortunate to have been raised in a family where education is a priority.

I am extremely honored to be eligible for this opportunity to apply for the National Honor Society. Becoming a member of the National Honor Society has been a goal I set for myself since I was a student in middle school. I have been greatly looking forward to this moment for a very long time. Overall, I have worked incredibly hard these last two years to display a positive character and obtain qualities such as leadership, responsibility, and scholarship. I strongly believe I will be a productive and reliable member of the National Honor Society at Harvard H. Ellis Technical High School.

There are several different qualities that make up who I am as a person, but there are four that stand out when it comes to being a National Honor Society member. These include character, leadership, scholarship and service. To begin with, I feel that character is an important quality to possess. In school, I have never been written up for violating code or have served a school detention/suspension and I hope not to in the future.

Dear the National Honor Society selection committee, Thank you for the great honor of being invited to apply for membership to such a well-respected and incredible organization. I am very excited about this opportunity as it presents an optimal way in which to further my passion of expanding my mind and bettering my community. Since I entered high school, I have pursued this by taking all honors classes and any Advanced Placement classes offered to me each year. Although sometimes I was not always entirely sure what to expect walking into each class, and of course there have been classes I like more than others, there is no class I regret taking because each and every one has opened my mind up to a new way of thinking.

It is a great honor to be nominated as a member of the National Honor Society. There are many reasons why I want to take part in NHS. One reason why I want to be in it is to continue to grow academically with people who have the same goals as me. I want to be encouraged, not discouraged by the people around me. If I get into NHS, it will give me a lot of opportunities to be a leader.

It is an extraordinary honor to be considered as a candidate for the National Honor Society. Being considered means I have achieved my goal in demonstrating my determination- in school and outside of school- and my willingness to aid people in my community. Being a part of such a prestigious organization is an enormous responsibility to which I will fully devote my time. Ever since I was a freshman, my goal was to work diligently to be among the highest scholars and to be accepted into this scholarly “hall of fame”. Through my relentless hard work and perseverance, I believe that I possess the four characteristics of a National Honor Society member- leadership, service, character, and scholarship.

Today I am deeply humbled to be recognized as a potential member of the National Honor Society. To me this means I have exemplified everything you look for in a student who goes above and beyond, not just in academics but in athletics, the community and at home as well. I have not taken this selection for granted, as I believe would be a great asset to the National Honor Society. I am hardworking, honest, reliable and quite charismatic too. I hold all the qualities required by the distinguished NHS like leadership, service, character and scholarship.

It is truly a great honor to be considered as a potential member of one of the most prestigious organizations in the country. The National Honor Society (NHS) is founded on three pillars: leadership, service, and character. These pillars are what every member of the NHS abides by daily. Integrity is being honest and doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Don Galer’s quote, “Integrity is what we do, what we say, and what we say we do” shows that integrity is affected by strong moral principles and what we do with those. The role of National Honor Society is to celebrate the students who have kept up their integrity throughout their high school career and to keep them on that same path. Integrity is an important aspect in education today because there are so many opportunities to cheat on a multitude of assignments but the students who stay away from cheating will be better off in the long run. The National Honor Society is built upon four founding principles: Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. I have a high school life filled with dedication to these four principles on the Spiritual standpoint, the Familial level, the Community level and finally at the National level. Moreover, I did begin my dedication to these same four principles even before this starting with the Boy Scouts of America and this commitment will continue along with having a rich future when I reach my fullest potential. I firmly believe that to have academic excellence is giving your best effort to maintain not just having straight As and a high GPA at or close to the edge of attaining a 4.0, but to also have the skills that help you perform your very best in college and beyond.
