Who Was The Downfall of Romeo and Juliet? “As rich shall Romeo’s by his lady’s lie- Poor sacrifices of our enmity!” The deaths of Romeo and Juliet could be blamed on the Friar and he could be held responsible for the downfall of them, but the one to blame is Romeo himself. Romeo is mostly to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he started the love between him and Juliet, asked Juliet to marry him too soon, and he does not listen to any of Friar Laurence’s advice . To begin, Romeo is the main cause for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he initiated the whole chain of love. The text states that Romeo said “Then move not while my prayer’s effect I take. Thus from my lips, by thine my sin is purged.” (Act I, scene 5, lines 106-107).
