Self-Concept
Who are you? That’s my most feared question. I wish I knew the answer. There are so many different things that contribute to my self concept. Self concept is described in Steven McCornack’s Reflect and Relate as “your overall perception of who you are.”(McCornack 39).
My self concept has developed because of my thoughts, my surroundings, my relationships, and my past experiences. I’m hoping to find out what happened to make me this way and how I keep constantly changing. Even though everything seems in place. Past experiences have made me who I am today. I was young when my parents got divorced. I don’t really like talking about it. It always comes up in my life though. I have friends ask to come over and they always ask “Who are you with this week?”. I get irritated with it because I’m the same person at both houses but they act like I'm different. Like me having divorced parents makes me two different people. I’ve never thought that I was a different person at either house. I’m a girl who loves her

Showing helps me relax and focus on how hard I’ve worked to bond with this animal and gain it's trust. They trust me to help take care of them and I trust them to do their job. My animals are my life, they help me keep on my feet and help me see things I’ve never seen before. When they get scared or sick I try and take care of them the best possible way I can. That has motivated me to become a vet and help every animal I can.
My self concept has changed and will continue to change as time goes on. I have only noticed a few changes throughout my life about my self concept. The way I approach my problems now is different from when I used to handle my problems. The way I look at people is entirely different now. I don’t judge anything fast I take my time and look at every possible angle before I make a

In my life, much has shaped me to be the person that I am today. For example, I am bullied and have been for many years. I kept it to myself and let it grow worse. Then, last year I found a teacher that I felt I could trust and told this teacher everything that had and was still happening.
Chapter two in the textbook Reflect & Relate an Introduction to Interpersonal Communication by Steven McCornack talks all about what “self” is and how to achieve complete fulfillment for one’s self which is also known as self-actualization. The components of self, as described in the book are, “ . . . self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem” (McCornack 39). Self-awareness is the idea in which one can take a moment to move feelings, beliefs, and other external influences aside and just evaluate oneself in a holistic perspective that is not skewed by opinions of others, etc. Having the ability to actually think about who one is brings a lot of power and mental stability in such a way that allows for improvement.
Showing livestock gives the kids an opportunity to fail and succeed during the same show season. Every judge will have a different opinion on your animal because each placing is different at the shows since the variables are different. Livestock exhibitors understand that sometimes you lose and sometimes you win, but that makes them a little more real life ready. Life gets difficult, things change daily and you have to be able to get back up and tackle tomorrow after a bad day. Students who show livestock don’t give up easily due to their experiences showing, they are more prepared for failure.
It is the decision made by an individual as an attitude towards the self. Possessing little self-regard can lead people to become depressed, to fall short of their potential, or to tolerate abusive situations and relationships. Too much self-love, but, results in an off-putting sense of entitlement and an inability to learn from failures. no other self-help topic has spawned so much advice and so many theories. Here are our best insights on how to strike a balance between accurate self-knowledge and respect for who you are.
I started off with the question “Who am I?” because this paper is about my self-concept. Within this paper, I will use the following concepts to describe my self-concept: social comparison, looking-glass self, self-esteem, self-discrepancy theory, and face. In the book Reflect and Relate: introduction to interpersonal communication by Steven McCornack defined social comparison as, “Observing and assigning meaning to others’ behavior and then comparing it with ours” (McCornack, 2016, p. 38).
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman emphasize the importance of living true to yourself and developing complete self-acceptance. To live a genuine life and completely accept who you are, you must understand your identity and your sense of self. In Self-Reliance, Emerson explains that your identity and your sense of self are spiritual. Whitman argues, in Song of Myself, that your identity and sense of self are based on both your soul and your body. While both Emerson and Whitman allow for intimate connections and friendships, Emerson encourages people to have relationships with a select few, whereas Whitman encourages people to connect with everyone and anyone, due to their different views of self.
“An individual perception of self, of body image, of time, of space influences the way he or she responds to object and events in his/her life. As individuals grow and develop through the lifespan, experiences with changes in structure and function, of their bodies over time influence their perceptions of self” (King, 1981, p. 19). These concepts give us the basis for understanding how individuals are personal systems. Perception, is “A process of organizing, interpreting, and transforming information from sense data and memory” (King, 1981, p. 24).
In Mcleod’s article, it said that people “‘think about, evaluate, or perceive’ themselves” (Mcleod 1). Mcleod talks, in the article, about how people thinking, evaluating, and perceiving about themselves is call self-concept. Whenever people think about themselves, most of the time, people are confused about whether or not they are pursuing right actions for their future, especially people with low self-esteem . Furthermore, people get more confused if their actions dramatically differ from others. However, again, people’s actions determine who they are, so even if their actions are dramatically different from others, it may be a path for that person’s success.
Though I might not have realized why I was the way I was back then, I know now that I have developed into the woman I am today because of my home life and experiences as a child. According to
The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
The self can be defined as ‘an organised, consistent set of perceptions of and beliefs about oneself’ (Passer, Smith, Holt, Bremner, Sutherland & Vliek, 2009, p676). We should aim to understand ourselves, learn know how we function
1.2 Overview of Self-Awareness When self-awareness is used, it means to what extent people are aware of their thinking pattern, traits, feelings and behavior (Brown, 2012). Fletcher and Bailey (2003) state that it is possible to preview at our own self-assessment and assessment made by other people in relation to self-awareness for instance, the scope of which we can exactly recognise how others observe us. In the same way, Yammarino and Atwater (1997) identify self-awareness as an adeptness of an individual to view own performance related to a specific criteria and then, evaluate others assessment of the individual and monitor precisely linking the two consequences. Fletcher and Bailey (2003) states the relationship between self-awareness and performance is significant when assessing self-awareness and further presents
My Self-Concept My self-concept includes a number of different adjectives and roles, these include both good and bad things. The adjectives I use to describe myself are as follows: kind, loyal, selfish, hard working, apathetic, practical, honest, occasionally rude, and procrastinator. As for the roles that I fill, I am a son, a brother, a friend, a student, the oldest son, and a teacher. Self-concept is a product of many things, it is not just simply what a person is.
Self is the ability to know right from wrong, understanding the society norms, behaviors, culture, and values. An example of this is learning and talking the native language, know how to eat from a spoon, and able to communicate with other people. If people or myself fail to experience socialization, they will not possess the acquired skills needed to develop self. This process is required for me to be apart and successful fit in the society.
