Execution: Escape From Furnace by Alexander Gordon Smith. The title of the story relates to this book because it’s about the main character, Alex, and his friends escaping from Furnace penitentiary. This is the final book and Alex has made a promise to himself to find Alfred Furnace, the owner and creator of Furnace Penitentiary, and kill him. Thus “execution”.
Gideon v. Wainwright was a Supreme Court case in 1963 where the court ruled that the courts had to provide counsel to the party being charged if they could not afford one. Clarence Earl Gideon was charged with breaking and entering in the Bay Harbor Pool Room in Panama City, Florida. He could not afford an attorney and the court denied his request for them to provide him one since it was not a capital offense, in that time courts were not required to provide an attorney to a party on trail if the crime was not a capital offense. Gideon was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. He originally sent his request that his trail was unfair to the Florida Supreme Court; it was denied.

The trial of Rudolf Abel and the capturing of Francis Gary Powers, a U.S. spy, was the first of many political conflicts on the way to compromise. In 1957 lawyer James B. Donovan accepted a request to represent Rudolf Abel (Ott “James”). James B. Donovan helped solve the conflict by defending Abel and organizing a trade. Donovan hoped he could turn Abel into a double agent but later his opinion changed. When Donovan met Abel for the first time on August 21 Abel told him he was offered a $10,000 year job and his freedom in the U.S.
In the 18th century America, a great division existed between the majority of blacks whom many were slaves, whites; men and women; and the upper and lower classes. New York City in 1741 had an economic decline intensified conflict between slaves involved in marketable activity and working-class white colonists who felt as if their jobs were threatened. These two types of people were competing against each which caused a chaos. To make things worse Britain had gone to was with Spain, and Spain promised the slaves for their freedom which made them turn their backs on Britain. This trial is similar to the Salem witch trial where they persecuted, many of who were slaves and a few poor white men.

It was the roaring twenties! Money was being made and people were enjoying life. All was well in the United States, including Dayton, Tennessee. It was smooth sailing in the volunteer state until July 21, 1925 when John Scopes, a substitute teacher, was convicted of illegally teaching his high school students the idea of evolution. Kanae vs. Smith: Diversity of Languages Language originates from many places and has many dialects. Each unique idiom carries different cultures as well as history to show how that way of speaking came to be. There are diverse ways of talking too, such as how Hawaii has developed “Pidgin”, a part of the English language that came into existence as the old islanders began to speak to one another in their own way. This was to make speaking English much more casual and faster. Lisa Kanae points out in her story Sista Tongue that language is different and is created through many different events in history as well as the mixing of cultures.
Was it worth it? The determination in leaving England and traveling to the New World. Yes, it was so erratic that the consequences didn 't matter. When William Bradford and John Smith set sail, they and the people they brought to the New World had different ideas. The ideas of working together were different for both colonies.
For the Application of the Criminal Justice System project of the Criminal Justice course, I chose the arrest of John Burke. Most likely, one has heard about the story of Pocahontas and John Smith. However, John Smith was not as loving and kind as he was portrayed. In the letter Address to Captain Smith, the speaker, Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas’ father, takes a condescending tone and addresses to the English settlers, especially John Smith, how the chief’s generous hospitality has not been appreciated. Literary devices such as rhetorical questions, antithesis, and repetition, diction, and pathos and ethos are exercised by Chief Powhatan to address his purpose and produce it as impactful as fully possible.
The criminal justice system has made a huge impact on past and present society. It has changed dramatically over the years, with different laws being created to help and protect our society. The first group of people involved would be the police and investigators. The authorities had the responsibility of examining all evidence found in Alexander’s home and making the connection between that and Jodi Arias. Once they discovered probable cause that Arias committed the murder, they were then able to arrest her. After the investigative period, the next group of individuals involved was the prosecution, defense, judge, and jury. The prosecution and defense both had the responsibility of proving or disproving the notion that Arias was guilty of first-degree murder.
Learning the significance in regards towards the criminal justice system, and noticing certain aspects and turning points made me realize just how important it is to continue to progress and overcome over every situation we may come across in our life. Both concepts of the books acknowledge the hardships that inmates face and provides many positive examples of how individuals overcame them. As for Mr. Smith Goes to Prison Jeff Smith discussed prison reform and his own personal experience in the prison system he had experienced. Jeff Smith's lifetime of advocacy and civil service make him perfectly suited to write this insightful and damning account of our Criminal Justice System.
Problem-oriented policing, also known as operational strategies, have five core elements: preventive patrol, routine incident response, emergency response, criminal investigation, and problem solving. In addition to the five core strategies, there is also a lone ancillary operation strategy, support services. Prevention patrol is an active response and most dominate operation of police strategy.
