Assistance dogs have been used greatly for hundreds of years to emotionally help disabled individuals. Recently, many of these individuals have included war veterans such as Lieutenant Luis Carlos Montalvan. Montalvan served in Iraq not long after the 9/11 tragedy. When he returned home his marriage ended and he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Eventually, he discovered a service dogs program for people like him. This is when he became acquainted to Tuesday, a golden retriever service dog. Tuesday helped Montalvan tremendously because she was able to adjust to his mood swings. She had the ability to calm him down if he were ever to start acting violently. Wall Street Journal called Tuesday “a seeing eye dog for the mind” when they discovered what she had done. This is just one of the many examples Donald Altschiller states in this book that prove how amazing the human-animal bond can be.

Studies have shown that animal therapy can decrease anxiety and pain, lower blood pressure and help alleviate depression, while offering companionship and a distraction from treatments. The Sobiech family decided to adopt a puppy named, Daisy, to help them through the hard times. She was like a furry panacea. As Daisy’s little tiff with the puppy in the mirror played out, we all turned and regarded her for a moment, then looked at one another as we wiped the tears from our faces. The tension and sadness shifted so easily into torrents of laughter, and I realized what a blessing this little beast was (Sobiech 75).

Sarah Harrington Mrs. Rechan English 4 15 February 2022 The Controversy of Service Animals. Many people believe that service animals are the angels of this earth. Yet some people debate, what should and shouldn’t be able to take this angel title? We all know that dogs are the main symbols of supporting animals, yet many people argue, why can't we have other animals as well?
Animals can help children learn about responsibility because they have to take care of the animal by themselves, so learning to do it by themselves teaches them responsibility. Previously, research in 2016 found that if a child sits in front of a dog with its owner will read better and have a better attitude (Rose 30). Furthermore, when a child has difficulty reading and they have been put with a dog their reading improves and their attitude improves as well. In the same way, children with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD have had their effects reduced by walking or grooming a horse, of course, this is from some studies. By the child grooming or walking the horse their effects from PTSD are reduced (Rose 30-31).
The parent then holds a seperate leash to give the dog commands. Autistic children are often in their own world and do not pay attention to the real world around them. Therapy dogs can keep these children calm and out of harms way. Therapy dogs are most commonly found in schools and hospitals. According to Alison DeNisco in her book Classroom Canines she says that,"On any given day in New Jersey's Randolph Township Schools, one of five certified therapy dogs may sit with a student during a counseling session or help in a lesson for preschoolers with special needs.

Dogs can specialize in aiding medical conditions. Paragraph one in “5 Things You Don’t Know About Service Dogs” by Morieka Johnson states, “A pooch named Mr. Gibbs totes Alida Knobloch’s oxygen tank so the 2-year-old can dash around with other children.”. Paragraph two in “5 Things You Don’t Know About Service Dogs” by Morieka Johnson explains how Sandra Leavitt, who has a rare seizure disorder, relies on her dog to provide a warning when a seizure is coming. Alida’s story is an inspirational example of dogs helping when it matters most. I think that it is great that Alida Knobloch can play with the other kids despite her condition.

Contrary to popular belief, a service animal isn’t just seeing eye dogs. They also are not a pet and shouldn’t be treated like one. “Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities” (“ADA Requirements”, 2011). These animals go through many hours of training so that a person
Many are not aware of the problems that using a fake service dog can cause, but those who are disabled understand the issue. This has been a problem for many years, and is only getting worse. Fake service dogs reflect a bad image for the real ones, and “discriminate against or restrict access to disabled persons” (Colman). The recurring problem of these fake service dogs is well known to such a small percentage of the population, it is difficult to create a stable solution that will be effective for a long period of time.
While many pet owners claim that their pets actually do make them feel better, there are still some skeptics. However, research studies show that pets do have a very positive impact on various aspects of our health. In fact, according to “In Their Innocence and Wisdom” by Lilly Calandrello, studies have correlated pet ownership with the following health benefits: lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, better psychological health, lower heart attack rates, higher survival rates following coronary heart disease, enhanced self-esteem and social interaction. So as people take care of their companion animals, the animals are in turn taking care of their
