Changes: The Red River Settlement between 1860 and 1870
In the 1860’s an increasing amount of settlers came to the Red River area in the hopes to find land. This influx was caused by the the growing population, as well as the lack of farmable land within Canada West. Most of these settler were part of the Orange Order, a protestant group with anti-French views originating from Ireland. One example of an anti-metis settler is a man known as Dr.John Christian Schultz. He ran the Norwester, a newspaper company, which he used to spread anti-metis propaganda. One fear the metis faced upon seeing the settlers, was the fact that they didn’t have any “official” land claims, even though they have been living in Red River Valley for a number of years. Additionally, in the 1860’s, the Metis were forced to take longer trips with their Red River Carts in order to hunt the dwindling

This made it harder to collect fur for trade, and with the addition of crop failures, the valley’s economy was in an undesirable situation. Additionally, the HBC began to lose interest in Red River because the fur trades were declining, leading to further economic damage. Tensions were high, and the poor state of the economy made it harder for the metis to continue their original way of life. Furthermore, People like Dr. Schultz, and the Orange Order continued to increased the tensions within the metis community.
Louis Riel and Canada’s Purchase of Rupert's Land
In his earlier years Louis Riel was sent to Montreal to obtain a more formal education and to study for Priesthood. Riel never finished his studies to become a priest, and returned to Red River Valley in 1868, where he found himself in the midst of growing tensions. With the newly appointed Lieutenant Governor William McDougal and writer Charles Mair, a new anti-metis campaign was born in order to expand Canada’s
For his education, he went to Collège de Montréal from 1858-1865. Louis Riel returned back to his hometown, after hearing the news that his father passed away. Although Riel left his education at a young age, he became a teacher, a Canadian politician and a lawyer which is considered one of his accomplishments. Throughout his whole life, Louis Riel had many accomplishments such as becoming the founder of Manitoba, being the Metis leader and being the central figure in the North-west and Red River resistance. When the Hudson 's Bay Company decided to sell Rupert 's land, the sale did not have any consultation with the Metis.
In the early 17th century England already had planted their seeds in the New World. Traveling aboard the Susan Constant in 1607, 104 settlers landed in Virginia, in which they established Jamestown. Jamestown became the first successful permanent English settlement in the Americas. Thirteen years later, 102 settlers (all being families) departed from Holland heading towards Virginia in the Mayflower. Lost and misguided they ended up higher up north than expected, making them land in Massachusetts Bay, where they established Plymouth Rock.
In 1701, Miskousath of the Mesquakie tribe pledged their loyalty to New France alongside other Western Great Lakes Tribes. Miskousath also encouraged the French to increase their presence in the area to discourage warfare. In that same year the Fox asked the French to stop trading arms and ammunition with the Sioux, to which the French gave no definite answer, promising to ask for consul from Louis XIV. The Mesquakie soon realized that the French had no intention of ending trade with the Sioux causing the Mesquakie to grow more hostile towards the French as they began intercepting French merchants. The Mesquakie seized the goods from the traders or forced them to pay such high tributes that merchants did not want to cross their land to get
In 1607, the attraction to the East Coast started off with the first permanent English settlement in North America, Jamestown. After Jamestown was founded no other colonies were made until 1620 with the Plymouth colony in Massachusetts. Not long after the founding of the first two colonies, eleven other colonies were created. Even with this many colonies I believe the first two colonies to be the most influential and insightful because they set the example for all of the other colonies. Because I believe these two colonies to be the most impactful I will start with history and then break down and compare different aspects including location, motivations, early years, religious differences, native relations, and economic standpoints.
Comparing and contrasting Jamestown and New England. Ever notice how different things are throughout history? Some include the U.S.As differences of opinion from England which lead to the American Revolution. Jamestown and the New England colonist are also a set of difference as to why they came to America, how they interacted with the natives, and where they landed and how it affected how they lived. Although there are some similarities, there were more differences than similarities because the area was different where each of them landed.
The Jamestown settlement is located in Virginia, it was the first permanent english settlement. They decided to settle there because it was hard for enemies to reach them through the narrow channel, and the thick forest around them provided plenty of lumber and the water surrounding them provided fish. The first colony was founded by a group of investors by the name of the london company. They fell because of lack of preparation, sickness during the winter spread rapidly and many died. In the year of 1624 Virginia fell under the rule of a royal colony and existed under the authority of a governor chosen by the king of England.
Sifton drove the campaign to open Canada’s doors to central and Eastern Europe. The country needed to establish the prairies and they needed people who could survive on their own to do it. The first to Canada’s invite for free land were peasants from Galicia and bukonovia. They were poor farmers who were practically starving to death on their own farms. Facing a bleak future and deep poverty, the idea of being granted 160 acres of land they themselves would own with bush that would provide them with food and wood for fuel, this became a strong force into pushing them to strike the opportunity.
Economy: In order for the colony to be stable, a crop that could be exported for profit and fuel needed to be grown. In this instance the crop was tobacco. Predominant Religious Beliefs and Practices: Virginians worshiped in the Anglican Church, which was supported by tax dollars.
The Oka crisis was a clash between a group of Mohawks mainly from the Kanesatake reserve, and the Quebec police over a disputed land that contained a Mohawk burial ground. The Mayor of Oka declared that the land would be used for a golf course expansion, and as a result barricades were erected by protesters in an attempt to halt construction (1). The conflict illustrated Canada’s inequality toward aboriginal people, proved that aboriginals would resort to aggression, and played a key role in creating the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The Oka crisis is significant to Canadian history because it showed Canada still had prejudice against its Aboriginal people, showed that natives were willing to use violence to defend their rights, and
The interaction of the Powhatan, English and Africans in Jamestown for the american society built for people of diverse cultures, traditions and beliefs. Jamestown including free enterprise, private ownership of land, representative government and rich cultural diversity by these three groups of people the Powhatan, English and the Africans. The Massachusetts Bay Colony was an English settlement on the east coast of North America. Massachusetts Bay was settled by Europeans.
Boston has changed throughout the years. From the years 1877-1920 Boston has changed drastically because of new technology and transportation changed. From using the telegraph to the first being created. From riding animals and walking far distances, railroads were created. Not only did technology and transportation help change Boston, but people helped changed Boston.
City life was changed drastically in the 1800s. “The most extensive urban renewal… took place in Paris in the 1850s. George Haussmann… built wide boulevards and splendid public buildings... Gradually, settlement patterns shifted” (250). Before, the streets were narrow and people didn’t have a lot of work to come by, and the reconstruction of the areas created many jobs.
Terrified and worried because of that incident, Louis Riel escaped to the United States in 1870 when the Metis needed him the most. When Riel came back, responsibility had to be taken for Riel 's actions. There was a fine of $5000 for whoever finds the murderer of Thomas Scott. For that reason, Louis had to spend 5 years out of Canada. He was banished from Canada and still came since at one point of his life he became insane thinking that he was a prophet.
I chose to do research on my great, great, great, grandmother who lived during the eighteen hundreds. She settled in North Fork, Arkansas. I discovered after many hours of searching for a modern and historic map that the population had dropped dramatically. The population for her time was 1,128.79 while the town’s population now is about 550 residents she settled in a rural community.
Riel then fled to the United States, and the Métis adopted a new way of life. While Riel’s tactics may not have been right, and some might question whether or not Scott’s execution was legal, he made people consider the rights of the Métis, and think about the people living in the area before the settlers, even though in the end, he wasn’t completely successful. In 1885, the Northwest Rebellion took place, the Métis people were facing difficulties with the Canadian government, and they called upon Louis Riel to lead them. Once again,
