Although most dental procedures are not painful, people have increased stress from the time they enter a dental office. The remaining 53% of the sample population in this study claimed they are not affected by dental phobia. Males with dental phobia totaled to 28% of all participants with some form of dental phobia while females accounted for 72% of the total subjects with dental phobia, which is more than 2 times the occurrence in males. A few years ago, my friend and I were having an intimate talk, and she brought up the topic that she had an abnormal fear of the opposite sex, mentioning how uncomfortable she was whenever she talked to men. She added that she sweated and her heartbeats were unusually fast when she looked straight at their eyes or faces. I suggested a few potential causes of her phobia: studying in all-girls school, the patriarchal society and the forbiddance of young love in Chinese culture. All these factors isolated her from making basic and appropriate connections with the opposite sex in her adolescence, and she agreed. In fact, these social institutions such as, culture, family, education, economics, social network and government, play a major role in shaping our values and behavior.

Not only do crooked or gapped teeth contribute to anxiety also yellowing and visible cavities make people hesitant to do simple things. Things that dental assistants do to help people be more confident in their smiles are whitening and cleaning teeth. I would be able to give people a whiter, fresher, and more healthy smile without them having to go under anesthesia unless they needed something like a root canal. I love to help people, by being an assistant versus an actual dentist, I would be the person who knows the patient the best and would be with them from the time they are to the time they leave. Essentially, I would be the person to do everything but perform a procedure on the patient, including, taking pictures of their teeth, x-rays, cleaning, whitening, and asking the questions about their oral health.
