Evaluating a song and being given the ability to relate enhances one’s respect for the composer. For example, when one first listens to “Danny’s Song” by Kenny Loggins, they probably believe the song is about love, however, once a person analyzes the lyrics the realize that the song is actually a story of a couple who are having a baby boy.

Terrell complements Gaye’s gospel grit throughout the verses, possessing a striking alto tone, with Gaye pulling back to let her powerful voice soar over his during the commanding chorus. This gives off the notion of togetherness, compatibility and makes listeners feel a yearning to love. When we write we are often confronted with some sort of “rhetorical situation”. This term is best described as a combination of factors. There is a rhetor(s), an exigence, an audience, and specific constraints to consider when analyzing a text. Through an interview with Professor Funnell, who teaches a course that aims to explore the representation of women in various facets of popular culture, I identified how these elements contribute to Beyoncé’s song, Flawless, and consequently discovered how to better address future situations regarding other texts. Music is a way for people to send a message through the lyrics.

The song that I chose was “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. It was released in 2004, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her poetry is simple in rhyme scheme and choice of words, conveying the meaning of her poems to the reader with much clarity. The aforementioned characteristics of her poem do not take away from the vibrancy of her descriptions, as she used symbolism to help her paint vivid images in the minds of her audience. Adding to that, she was a devout Christian, and so her poems take on a highly religious, spiritual, and emotional theme, removed from material wealth and earthly possessions.

Some for the good and some for the worse. Throughout the lyrics and music video for this song it gives the listener a harsh reality check on how hard some people have it in life and the tough decisions people are forced to make in tough times.
