Definition Essay: What Does It Means To Be Free?

“Freedom is never given; it is Won”-A. Philip Randolph. To me, Freedom is Hope. Freedom is men and women fighting every day to keep me safe. It's not always peace, and it isn't always free.

Freedom is a type of living that everyone in the world would appreciate having. Some people live in a communist country or a country where freedom do not exist and everything is controlled by the government. With many rules and regulations proposed by the government, people feel that it takes away from their freedoms. Nonetheless, America was established upon freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. People want to live this way along with protection from danger.

Freedom has been the central belief of America since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Since this day, America has worked hard to keep the idea that America is the “land of the free.” However, throughout the construction of this nation, freedom was defined differently by each person. Freedom to African Americans meant liberty from enslavement and land ownership. Freedom to Europeans meant freedom of religion and government.

Freedom comes at a cost. Americans have exerted their all to gain freedom even before the founding of this country. For example, the U.S. has had many accomplishments such as eliminating slavery, advancing women's rights, and pursuing other freedoms across our country. Overtime Americans have pushed for freedom, and have been successful in doing so through their determination.

Webster Dictionary defines freedom as a “political right”. To me, freedom is much more than that. Freedom gives me and the people of America the right to do anything we want; it allows us to be ourselves no matter where you come from, or who you are. Unfortunately, America has not always been this way; people of different races were treated like trash on the sidewalk. Frederick Douglass had a first-hand experience to this treatment, and he knew what it was like before America allowed everyone to actually be “free”.

Freedom (liberty) is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without resistance. Freedom is America's honor, and honor comes with obligations and we have the obligation to use our freedom wisely. We can accept or reject the obligations, but we must choose well. I'm a patriot for country because of the freedoms that I have. One way we have our freedom is because of the Declaration of Independence and first ten Amendments of the Constitution or The Bill of Rights.

H.L. Mencken claims, “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe” meaning he would prefer safety over freedom to which I would agree on. Controversy between freedom or safety is that freedom can have no consequences to our actions, but safety can protect with consequences. Freedom itself can be a blessing, yet without a sense of security or protection there will be chaos because some people cannot handle so much power into their hands. Being free gives us the potential of doing what we please to do whether it is doing our jobs or committing a crime.

A question that most Americans ask is “Are we really free?’ and people respond with multiple different answers such as yes, no, and “we used to be”. This answer always varies on the type of person you ask because everyone has they different meaning of the word “Free”. Freedom means “not under the control or in the power of another”. Freedom was a gift given to America from the forefathers’ victory against the British.

 Freedom is a short, powerful word we take for granted every day. It’s hard to fully appreciate freedom when we’ve never had it snatched away from us. We get to choose our jobs, where we live, what we eat. If we are unhappy at work, we have the freedom to quit and find work elsewhere.

Freedom I believe once freedom has been won, it can be taken away. If you are being bad or not following the rules, than you should not have the rights to do what you want. Freedom has been given to you for a reason, and you need to use it for that reason. I believe it should be taken away because sometimes freedom shouldn’t always be “free.” You should be limited on what you get to do.

The main idea of freedom is to be respectful and helpful to the community. Freedom is not endless. Freedom should be limited in some circumstances for the benefits of the community. You can't just do whatever you want just saying that “I have freedom.” We can’t kill people, do things illegally.

Freedom means the power or right to act, speak, or think without restraint, and the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. Freedom is the correction to do what he/she wants, live life, and eat what he/she wants. How do we live free? We live free by not judging other people’s freedom rights. Everyone has their own rights.

However, the principle of Life is Freedom, not control. Contrary to popular belief, we do not achieve freedom by virtue of being in control; instead, our efforts to control others, even our attempts at self-control, fail to liberate. This is because we are already free. In fact, we live in a state of Freedom, in which there are no external constraints, and all limits are self-imposed. Such is the nature of the infinite Life, the one Life, which is our life now.

The United States is unique in history it is the only country to ever to be founded not on nationality, religion or natural border; the United States was founded on the idea. This sacred idea defines american life no matter So when we think about living in america we mustn 't think of groups of people divided but out common goal purpose and goal. Living in america is so unique due to the freedoms, principles and determination of the american people; that are inseparable from the american people and way of life. Freedom is something as Americans we often take for granted, we forget that it is across human history it is always a rare and fleeting gift that can and has been taken in an instant.

Freedom has always been one of the most beloved words of the American dictionary. From a philosophical point of view America has always been the country that puts the most emphasis on the idea of fundamental rights. For example, freedom of speech in the US is elevated to an absolute level. In fact, in America freedom of speech is perceived so highly that any extremists, xenophobic, and fascist speech is protected by the law if it is not a clear incitement to violence – while in Italy and Germany any recall to fascism and Nazism is a criminal offense. Therefore, in a national born on the idea of self-made men where the land had to be conquered by the strong ones who had the courage to do it, the idea of emancipation has a different meaning.
