More was Lost than Lives The day of the September 11 attacks was a terrible day that will be forever remembered. The attacks however did not only cost Americans their lives at the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and on those planes; the attacks also took Americans’ freedoms. Following the attacks the unconstitutional Patriot act was passed, the inconvenient and ineffective Transportation and Security Agency was formed, and the NSA’s mass surveillance program was increased. While all of these actions were done in order to protect Americans from terrorism they have only succeeded in denying Americans the very rights afforded to them in the United States Constitution.

Atticus decides to take the case in defending a black person, something nobody in the town would have done. Most of the residents of Maycomb do not believe in equality and have hatred towards black people. If an African-American is charged for committing a crime, he is automatically believed to be guilty because of their skin color. Muslim Americans endured more government scrutiny after September 11, 2001. The United States government decided to monitor this population. This involves surveillance on phones, worship place and funds. The US government needed to pass a law to collect data to use concerning risks. The Patriot Act In post nine eleven America there was and still is a hysteria regarding terrorism. People were scared for their lives every time they went outside Bureaucrats and politicians were in a state of “fear” for themselves and their families. Politicians saw this as a time to do what they wanted in congress with terrorism as a cover story. This fear enacted many new bills and laws, but none were as controversial as the Patriot Act. From an observational standpoint this act was seen as any other to Americans in fear of terrorist acts.

Most recently, the “war on terror” has led to limitations on civil liberties. After the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, President George W. Bush authorized the PATRIOT Act. This act gave the government more power to conduct searches of suspected terrorists, detain and remove suspected terrorists, and place wiretaps on belongings of suspected terrorists. Edward Snowden, former computer specialist at the CIA and NSA, released about 1.7 million classified documents exposing a global surveillance project. Not only has the government been spying on suspected terrorists, but also the American people.

According to the dictionary, freedom is the power to determine action without restraint. Freedom for my generation in America is taken for granted. Having freedom is important because you aren’t forced into doing anything you don 't want to do, it makes life experiences enjoyable, you can be yourself and life 's more fun with freedom. America’s gift to my generation is freedom.

Civil liberties have been affected since the 9/11 events by the Patriot Act. According to N.A. (2003) “The Patriot Act decided to trade away certain civil liberties in exchange for what it hoped would be more security”. As said, the act meanwhile is concerned on providing effective security measures for people in the country, has encroached on freedoms. Like any restrictive law, it has been controversial. For example “many immigrants who had lived in the United States for decades have been rounded up and deported for minor visa violations, not for any connection to terrorism” stated N.A. (2003).

This shows the readers how grateful the friends and acquaintances of Tom Robinson are for Atticus defending him in court. The black people of Maycomb are tired of the racial discrimination and segregation in and are ecstatic to see progress being made. You may be surprised by how some individuals feel angry and offended at others simply because of the pigment of their skin. These individuals let their hatred of those that are different from them control their actions to the point that they bring harm and malice upon these people. This piece of writing showcases that and also addresses how racism in Maycomb is viewed and how the people in Maycomb feel about those with different skin tones as well. There are those individuals that do not intend to be racist but the way that their society is programmed they unintentionally contribute to the racist population. The racism that occurs in To Kill A Mockingbird is very present and normalized.

The reason why the government supports security is because they had significant amounts of terrorism and they are just looking out for us. They main causes of terrorism are the 911, Boston bombing and there’s a lot more but that’s some that triggered the government to be looking out for use and also not having much trust in anyone. Security is very important but when it’s too much it’s no longer a protection but an invasion. But tell me what the point of having any of this if they don’t consider it as is. Freedom! The dictionary says freedom is the condition of not being bound to restraints, or oppression. Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one desires. However, to me it means much more. To me freedom means having the ability to practice your own religion and to speak freely publicly or privately.

Freedom can be interpreted in many ways, if you look up freedom in the dictionary it will say: the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. My ancestors said, “America is freedom”, my little sister says, “freedom is all the ice cream and T.V. in the world.” For me I’m not sure yet what I think freedom is.
