Cross Country is an extremely mental sport, so I guess you can call me insane. Sure people always question me why I run, and sometimes, even I question myself. But the reason I run always comes to me during the race. Five-hundred people all crowded around each other, everyone anxious to hear the sound of the gun. As the gun fires, everyone takes off running. Not away from something, but all towards the same thing: the finish-line. Adrenaline kicks in, the bystanders all cheer, packs of runners start to form, and then the actual competition begins. As the people beside you try to show dominance and speed up, you need to stay mentally strong, and run with them. Three miles later, with the finish-line in sight, everyone starts sprinting. Parents and coaches yell at you to push harder. Everyone around you is hurting too, it's just a matter of who loves the pain more; who pushes harder to finish faster. After I hit the finish-line, I realize why I run. I love the competitiveness, the adrenaline, and above all, the feeling I get when I finish. So what exactly has this painful, insane sport taught me? It taught me commitment, dedication, sportsmanship, and most importantly, it gave me inspiration. Cross-Country inspired me to exceed my running capabilities and see what I can actually do. With inspiration from this sport, I decided to run a marathon as part of a school project. After all, if I love the feeling from finishing a 3.1 mile race, just imagine what I could feel from a 26.2 mile race. With my relay team stretched,warmed up, and ready to go, we headed towards the stadium where we would race against the fastest girls in the nation. Intimidated but not deterred we headed out of Tent City and into the gates of Turner Stadium. Knowing this was my last race I would run with my close friends and relay team, being it 's the last race of the season and we all weren’t going to be in the same age group next year, I had a whole new mind set. I was constantly thinking, “we have to make top ten because we can make top ten.” “We have the times, we have the strength, we have the speed, we just need to have the guts to walk in there like we are going to shred the track into pieces.

In life, even though we are told not to do so, a lot of us “count our chickens before they hatch”. We make assumptions on things before they happen because we believe that if something seems so likely, it will happen. Well, that is what my Liberty High School cross country team did my sophomore year. Going into the year, we not only knew we were going to be strong, we thought other teams were going to be weak. The top teams from the state finals the previous year had all lost most of their key pieces.
During my final year of Cross Country around Regionals at Oglethorpe, I ran my final race for my high school career. Banks County was nearly number one in the State, the furthest we had ever ranked in history, and spirit and hopes for State Championship were high. I was nervous, like nobody’s business, I had messed up during my senior night because I was upset for my parents for not showing up and escorting me. And I was scared that I was going to do horribly. But as I ran, I realized that if I let my past mistakes and failures hold me back or get in my way, so I ran, harder and better than I ever had before and apparently even beat a “skinny kid”.

How Different are Sports? Have you ever thought about how many differences there are between all the sports world wide? Between almost every sport there are some similarities and some differences. Two sports that I think have both similarities and differences are soccer and cross country. Even though soccer and cross country are two very different sports they also have many similarities between them.
I have not been able to participate in athletics nearly as much as I would have liked. I started running track in the spring of my seventh grade year. I performed surprisingly well and decided to participate in cross country the next fall. I spent the summer training and preparing for the season, and it definitely showed. Tip number one: finish fast, you never know what the person beside has left, they could easily pass you up in the last second. Another tip would be to slow down your breathing, when you breathe fast you are using up a lot of your oxygen quicker than it should be. My next tip would be to always land on your forefoot, this will help the collision forces in the foot that would be much worse if you landed on your heel. Instead of focusing on your running you should really try just to clear your mind. My last tip would be to always lead with your chest.
