High quality, accessible, and patient care which is considered to be patient-centered is crucial for quick and quality recovery (Wilkinson, 2012). Plans require visions that involve the creation of interprofessional competencies by students who are planning to take up nursing as their profession. Providing such skills to students will ensure that they get into the workforce ready to engage in the effective creation of teamwork and even team-based care (Eastman, 2010). My current station of work is an example where continuing competence is to build on each professional nurse. The advancement in medical science, technology and complexity of the current patient care, demands the nurses to be prepared with the knowledge and skills in Assessment and Intervention, Effective Communication, Critical Thinking, Patient Relationship, Leadership, Management and Teaching. As the required competency increases, the curriculum needs to prepare the nursing graduates to have these core competencies as outlined by COPA model (Competency Outcomes and Performance Assessment)” (Lenburg, 1999 a, b). The BSN curriculum is tailored to accommodate these professional development requirements, the modern era demands that incorporate a broad scope of practice, giving a better edge in competency compared to an ADN, especially in Critical Thinking. A noteworthy point is that the differences in clinical competencies of a BSN and ADN are few compared to management, leadership, decision making and communication competencies.
Each morning patients came in for assessment and the treatment team developed or altered existing treatment protocols. I longed to be part of this team, working to stabilize each patient so they could return home to pursue their goals. The nurses stood out to me as the team members at ground zero in the unit, working directly with patients, and advocating for them in meetings. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will provide this same standard of holistic care to my patients, taking into consideration their biological, social, psychological and cultural needs while developing and implementing treatment decisions.

The goal is provide patient satisfaction and best quality of care. In a multidisciplinary team, communication can always be improved. Finding ways where everyone is informed about a patient and that the patient can also be informed as well. Professionals may have a hard time working as a team, so practicing and adapting to working all together can improved the way everyone works together (Charlotte H., 2021) The facility or organization can provide performance consulting, and team effectiveness training, these professionals should all learn about each other’s professions so that they all respect each other’s knowledge and input.
As a senior nursing student, I am preparing to utilize the knowledge I have learned and the skills practiced to become a professional and excellent nurse. Safe, compassionate, quality care is a standard that I will be incorporating in my practice. Northwestern Memorial Hospital displays these goals, standing behind excellent nursing practice, as well as making an environment that encourages the highest standards in care. Excellent nursing practice is not an individual accomplishment, it is a team effort that requires collaboration and respect amongst healthcare providers. I believe Northwestern promotes team nursing that is dedicated to patient-centered care, while achieving positive health outcomes.
Khalili, Hall & Deluca (2014) support Ndoro (2014) by stating that there is competition and hierarchies between health-care professionals, preventing collaborative working. The aim of interprofessional practice is to replace these barriers with co-operation and equality to provide person-centred care. Khaili, Hall & Deulca (2014) go on to explain that failures to implement collaborative practice has led to destruction of care, disappointment for both clients and practitioners and poor quality of care is then the outcome. Not everyone agrees collaborative working is beneficial.
I used to overlook this notion as a simple concept that’s easy to accomplish within a team. However, I’ve learnt that it is not so easily achieved. Functional interprofessional collaboration is integral in delivering optimal health care and promotion. Successful interprofessional collaboration is important for nursing students, such as myself, as it is a concept and skill that is applicable to multiple contexts. My experience in an elementary school has given me the chance for mutual learning and collaboration with non-health professionals within the broader context of the community.
Being able to work as an effective member of a team is of critical importance in patient care. The General Medical Council states that “Doctors and students must develop skills to work in multi-disciplinary teams. This involves respecting the skills and contributions of colleagues and other professionals, and developing effective communication with other members of the team and with patients” (1). A multi-disciplinary team is defined by the Health Service Executive as “a group of healthcare workers who are members of different disciplines, each providing specific services to the patient” (2). An example of a multi-disciplinary team could be a surgical team.

Appraisal of the activity specified that students had extremely better understanding of quality improvement and its relationship to patient care than they had already (Fater, 2013). The nursing faculty and affiliating agency staff propose to continue to evolve student skills targeting competency development (Fater, 2013). Faculties have to think about some factors before evaluating a curriculum using the gap analysis (Fater, 2013). They have to think of the labor-intensive nature of the data mining desired (Fater, 2013).
The demand for effective and competent employees continuously increases. As a result, job competencies become an integral part for quality service that covers the knowledge, skills, abilities, traits and behaviors that allow an individual to perform a task within a specific function or job (Shippman, et.al, 2014). In determining the impact of the quality of work that people do, a competency model is needed to organize a collection of observable skills, behaviors, and attitudes (“Competency Models - What Are They Anyhow and What’s the Big Deal? - St. Charles Consulting Group,” n.d. 2015). Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse. A nurse’s ability to give quality care to their patient is an important aspect to a patient’s life both now and in the future. As such, nurses must exhibit specific qualities in their practice in order to maintain the best standard of care for their patients. Given this, I believe that the standards of knowledge, advocacy, and self-awareness are foundational to the nursing practice and to a nurse’s capacity to provide quality patient care. Knowledge
Competency-based education has gained attention in higher education (Fastré, Klink, Amsing-Smit, & Merriënboer, 2014). It is a model that determines if the student is competent in the ability, skills, or knowledge and is capable to prove it (Leggett, 2015). Competence changes over time, with experience, and with the environment (Gruppen et al., 2016). Several factors influence competence, which are knowledge, attitudes, and judgment (Gruppen et al., 2016). Competency-based education has four components (Gruppen et al., 2016).
