Thomas Henry Huxley, an English biologist who was known for his Darwin’s Bulldog theory based on Charles Darwin’s evolution theory, once said, “ It is because the body is a machine that education is possible. Education is the formation of habits, a super-inducing of an artificial organization upon the natural organization of the body.” Huxley explains that because of our body, and how it works, humans have been able to find new studies. Huxley’s ideas are similarly seen in the book Stiff, by Mary Roach, which shows the readers that donating one's body involves more than just surgeons removing organs and throwing away a body. Roach shows that donating a body helps enhance further education, newer technology, and greater discoveries. Although several words in this passage may be spelt differently, they can be closely read as the same meaning. To show this, Roach uses connotative diction within the passage and the whole novel. The reader often can be found interpreting words connotatively rather than reading the text through a dictionary meaning. “ But H is different. She has made three sick people well. She has brought them extra time on earth… Cadavers like H are the dead’s heroes.” Connotative diction is shown in the way that “heroes” and “gift” are read by the reader connotatively. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word “hero” refers to “a person who is greatly admired (Webster 1).” While this may be closely related to the connotative version, the reader may see the word as “a person who did something good.” This rhetorical strategy has a great effect on the book as a whole in a way that Roach often uses allows the reader to imagine things as they would like while still getting her purpose across- to donate your body to
Heroes put others before themselves and will do anything to ensure that thing’s safety. Many people have either risked their lives or have loss their lives due to trying to save others. An example of this would be the man in the red bandana or Welles Crowther. Crowther was working in the twin towers as planes were crashing into them. Crowther could have ran away from the other people when the planes hit, but he chose not to spare himself, but to save others and sacrifice his own life.
Yet when looking over the entirety of it, it seems that Roach uses sequential structure to manipulate the readers into possibly donating their bodies to science by giving a clear-cut explanation of how the organ extraction procedure works. This is effective because when trying to persuade a person into doing something that requires a large amount of commitment, people usually want to know exactly what they're getting into-- no ambiguity, no bias, and nothing misleading. The beginning of the excerpt contains graphic imagery, some of which is shown through similes, depicting the removal of cadaver H’s internal organs in order to donate them to living humans who need them. In the section she uses descriptive phrases such as “‘Cherry Sno-Kone’” and the simile “cutting off veins and arteries to be included, like spare sweater buttons” to implant a vivid illustration of the scene in the reader’s mind. By using this imagery, Roach places the reader into the situation she’s recreating in order to make it easier to manipulate or convince them to donate their organs after death.
She started with the backstory of each woman then divided the trials by date while going in-depth with detail about the women. She divided the trials by date and by women. Roach first gave information on the women and then the trials which helped the reader understand the period. What sticks out the most after reading the book is the sheer resilience and agency of the six women at the center of the controversy.
A.S Patric’s use of diction conveys his feelings as being almost culpable for killing off the snake, but he tries to make it seem like the man was obligated to kill it. The scene where the man says, “My first instinct was to let him go this way and I would go mine”, shows that he wasn’t violent by nature. The man describes afterward that he had to look out for the other people and animals that might be harmed by this venomous creature. The effects that this passage can have on a reader is one where they may feel pity for the naive snake and the ‘violent’ man. The use of the word, hacking, seems to indicate that the man was mercilessly trying to attack the creature.
ANDREAS VESALIUS Andreas Vesalius, the father of modern anatomy was born in Brussels in 1514 and died in 1564. Throughout his life of 49 years, Vesalius challenged medical theories with a thirst for learning and discovery. Born into a wealthy family with his father as a pharmacist at the court of Margret of Austria, he received a privileged education from six years old. In 1537, Vesalius gained his doctorate and became a professor of Surgery and Anatomy at the University of Padua. He valued lifelong learning which contributed to his revolutionary works and methods demonstrating the spirit of a Renaissance man.
Throughout the entire novel, the author’s use of literary devices is very clear. In Eugene Collier’s short story, Marigolds, the author used figurative language and diction to convey a serious and angry tone on poverty. Marigolds, a tale full of voice elements, addressed the theme of poverty with indignation and sincerity. Though Lizabeth, Collier narrated the story; it was about a girl recalling her life during World War 2 in a poor family. In the first example of voice element, Lizabeth described poverty as “the cage in which we all were trapped” (Collier 1). She uses this metaphor to explain how penury anchored her family.
