Introduction.
Greek mythological heroes, and Roman mythological heroes share similar trades, however are different in many ways. These similarities and differences can be identified when looking at the means for the creation of a hero, and a hero’s life. This essay will discuse the similarities and differences in Roman and Greek heroes by anylysing the primary and secondary sources they feuture in respectively. Firstly will context be given, secondly the secondary sources in which the heroes feature, and lastly the spefic Greek and Roman hero will be compared.

Aeneas being a decedent from Troy and thus is he seen as an associate of the royal house of Troy. In the Iliad Aeneas is an important warrior in the Trojan war. However, Aeneas most significant role is through Virgil’s Aeneid, where Virgil made the arrival and settlement of Aeneas in Italy the main theme in his story. Aeneas was born near to tear, on mount Ida, he was given to his father Archallis at the age of five. During the Trojan war he lead the troops of Dardanian, but still under Hectors demands. (Ross, 2007: 36) The Greek hero: Odysseus.
Odysseys is known for being a hero from legendary Greek mythology. He lived in Ithaca and was also the king there, being the son of Laertes and Anticlea. He first featured in Homer’s epic the Iliad but his main feature was in the Odyssey (Griffen, 1987:45)
The primary sources in which heroes feature.
One can only understand the cause for heroes through looking at the epics which they feature in respectively (Sillk, 1965: 1). Both Odysseus and Aeneas features in the Iliad by Homer, but their greatest contributions are made for Aeneas, through Virgil’s Aeneid, and for Odyssey’s through Homer’s Odyssey. One can see the difference in Greek and Roman hero’s through understanding the creation of them (Trypanis, 1987:88)

Virgil wanted to create a means for Rome. “The subject he finally chose was the legendary origin of Rome through the foundation in Italy by Aeneas of lavinium, which founded Alba Longa, which founded Rome”. (Williams, 1992:14)

The purpose of roman heroes, which can be seen through the Virgil’s Aeneid is to give means to the origin of Rome (Sinnigen, 1965:55). Aeneas is thus appropriate, because Aeneas was excelled from Troy after it has been invaded by the Greeks, due to the capture of Helen, by Paris, and it was thus his duty to take his companions to a western land to find a city which would, as the centuries rolled by, achieve world dominance and civilize mankind ( Camps, 1967:33)
Virgil thus created the Aeneid to show Rome’s dominance to Greece, the characters from Roman heroes and Greek heroes are thus opposite to show Rome’s dominance. Homer however created the Iliad and the Odyssey before the Roman cavitation.
Homer and the Odyssey.
Odyssey, however did not have much of a reason for being written, it was Homer way of storytelling through a poem. Homer travelled and gained the story of Odysseus, and he create the verbal form of the Odyssey through this information (Beye, 1968:158). The Romans emerged from Italy and formed their culture that can find its roots among an array of native tribes and Greek colonies that populated Italy. There are two parts of the foundation of a Roman’s identity that stemmed from the cultural influences that produced the Romans, their culture and their ideals. The first component of the foundation of the Roman identity is the usage and the incorporation of others’ myths into their own etiological myth. The second part stems from these myths that made the Romans believe that their existence and success was the result of fate. By looking into Virgil’s Aeneid and Sallust’s Conspiracy of Catiline one can see that this two-part foundation produced a society and people that embodied this idea that they were the best parts of all the cultures
The Roman historian Livy describes the aftermath of the Roman general Marcus Furius Camillius victory over the Gauls in 390 BC. The general attempts to persuade the Roman people to remain in Rome, instead of moving to nearby Roman controlled city Veii. Using Livy’s account of the speech, as well as the Virgil’s mytho-historical tale of Aeneas’ voyage from Troy to Italy, Camillius’ actions will be defended based on three points that he took during his speech; his presentation of Roman religious tradition, national pride, and historical Roman achievements. Camillius’ speech aimed to inspire the Romans that they were not defeated; their best days were actually ahead of them. Camillius begins with an appeal to Roman religious tradition.
His name is Odysseus. In the Odyssey, Odysseus deserves the distinction of an epic hero for many reasons such as the fact that he is cunning, formidable, and resourceful. Furthermore, Odysseus deserves the distinction of an epic hero because he is a cunning man. Odysseus used much strategy to tackle obstacles and defeat many of his antagonists.
Christopher Reeve, actor, best known for his role as Superman once said, “ A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” The Odyssey, written by Homer is an epic poem following a Greek hero named Odysseus on his adventure home after winning the Trojan War. The poem spans over 10 years. The war took 10 so Odysseus has not seen his wife or son for 20 years. Odysseus shows many qualities of being an epic hero throughout the story.
In short, Aeneas character as presented by Virgil is not only a heroic warrior, he symbols self- improvement. The change in Aeneas's personality leads him to be Rome's Finder and the one who gives glory to the Roman Empire. “Like the ship of Theseus, you are a collection of constantly changing parts: your physical body, mind, emotions, circumstances, and even your quirks, always changing but still in amazing and sometimes illogical way, you stay the same too. " The change of Aeneas's personality and the change of the ship of Theseus’s parts lead to amazing and honorable results.
Odysseus' Journey Sailing around every corner of the world, Odysseus shows off his heroic abilities as he battles monsters and makes decisive decisions in The Odyssey. The epic poem which contains the story of Odysseus was written by Homer called, The Odyssey. The this epic poem, Homer talks about Odysseus' journey across the world as he tries to find his way home to Ithaca. However, as he was cursed by the gods, he faces many obstacles such as fighting monsters. In the end, Odysseus shows that he's a hero by being brave, fighting through the gods' curse, and never giving up on your goals just like the modern day hero, Bethany Hamilton.
Because as a hero/leader, his ideal duty is to encourage and comfort his fellowmen and soldiers. He has to feign hope and suppress his inner anguish. In order to build a new civilization in Italy, he can be regarded as a " man of Roman ideal" which is already prophesied. As his journey progresses, he is portrayed as a man who must learn to dominate his passions and will to supplicate himself to a larger duty given to him. He must learn to embrace a 'sense of duty ' to gods, father and his son, and for the
Aeneas is a very virtuous and loyal character. In the Aeneid, Aeneas is off to fulfill his destiny of finding Rome in Italy after living past the fall of Troy. Aeneas goes about fulfilling his destiny by giving in to the fate that the gods have laid out for him, instead of fighting his fate like many others. This is very heroic and attracts a reasonable favor by the gods. Aeneas also upholds the dignity of the family, has compassion for others, and puts his wants and emotions on the side.
The odyssey could be described as the book of intelligence and wisdom as opposed to other epics by the same writer such as The Iliad. The story tells of a man after ten years of the Trojan War. Ten years have passed since Troy fell. However, Odysseus still not was able to return to his Kingdom of Ithaca, in Greece because he is kept captive by a powerful witch, while back in his homeland, all the men are courting his wife, Penelope, and trying to convince her that the Greek hero had died. Her only companion is Telemachus her son and she wishes that he grows up into a man to take care of her.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Odysseus must battle the suitors that have taken his wife Penelope, and may soon kill his son Telemachus.
Exercise Two At first glance, Virgil’s description of Aeneas’ shield in The Aeneid may just appear to be a conveyance of Roman history. However, Virgil only includes precise descriptions and details in his catalogue to conform the narrative to his desires for Aeneas and Aeneas’ future in battle. Therefore, the purpose the catalogue serves in the narrative is to not only give Aeneas a purpose to fight, but also the confidence to fight bravely.
The Aeneid was commissioned by Augustus, the first citizen of Rome. Augustus desired to restore Rome after a brutal civil war and advocated for a conservative standpoint. (Williams). Within the Aeneid, the praise of Augustus’ values does not merely alter the plot, but rather it is the plot. Primarily, the Aeneid is a story about the fate of Rome, not Aeneas himself.
When it comes to Marlowe, such clothing takes a tri-layered form. He takes the story of Dido from the story of Dido and Aeneas by Virgil and creates his own version of the story, converting it into a satirizing play. By doing so, Marlowe too attempts to cling his name to the chain of numerous famous names and stories so that his name will also last. He, additionally, brings together the three dimensions of time, namely the past, the present and the future, in order to monumentalize his text. He mocks the past events and the way they are presented to the readers, shows his work to a present audience and degrades the future by undermining the impact of it when dealing with past and present issues.
The Iliad by Homer, the Odyssey poem written by Homer and the Prometheus mythology are classical texts that reflect the historical and cultural background of the Greek and Roman literary skills. The Odyssey and the Iliad are Homer’s epic poems that portray Greek and Western culture. The three texts give an insight of the ancient Roman myths, culture and the literature during both the 17th and 18th century. The two texts by Homer and the Prometheus mythology represent a classical period that consisted of the cultural history and the civilization of the Romans and Greece hence known as the Greece-Roman World. Homer’s narratives, the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey”, and Aeschylus mythical story “Prometheus” have cultural and mythological similarities
