Confederation: A Significant Event In History

When Confederation happened New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were thinking of joining with the other Maritime provinces to make their own confederation but John A. MacDonald convinced everyone to unify with Ontario. Many people living in the Maritimes didn’t want to join because they were worried about many things like not having an equal voice with Ontario and Quebec. They thought they had enough natural resources like fishing and mining and didn’t need the other provinces. There were positive and negative consequences of Confederation for the people in the Maritimes.

The Article’s of Confederation are poor, there are differences between governments; and the country does not have a constitution. What is happening to the United States of America right now? There are multiple problems with the Article’s of Confederation.

The Articles of Confederation set up a unicameral government that only consisted of a legislative branch, with each state having a single vote. There was not an executive branch, nor a judicial branch. The Articles of Confederation gave too much power to the states. For example, the states could coin money, but couldn't collect taxes. Congress was very limited in its power, they could declare war, conduct foreign affairs and make treaties The Constitution aided the issues brought forth by the Articles of Confederation by creating three branches of government (separation of power), which each have a limited amount of power thanks to the checks and balances

The Articles of Confederation was written when the United States was a fairly new country, and from the people wanting to create a different government from the king of England. Although this document respected individual rights, it was too loose of a document that could drive the country to success. After revising what they had created, the founding father of the us the created the us constitution. It was more strict, but still valued peoples rights.

The Articles of Confederation couldn’t deal adequately with many problems that arose during the 1780’s. Some of the problems include National Security and Currency. On the other hand, The Articles of Confederation did have some admirable traits to it. Such as the Ordinances of 1787 and 1785. Though the Articles had some praiseworthy achievements, it did come with some major complications.

Many believed that the adoption of the union had alleviated all problems surrounding independence but later realized that it was crumbling right before their eyes. Following the Declaration of Independence, Continental Congress became aware that it was a necessity to form a national government. During the discussion for a new government, many problems were encountered. One of the issues that was faced dealt with the question as to whether representation and voting would be would be portioned out or would it be done by each state. This caused some problems and delays for the constitution but after Philadelphia had been captured by Britain, this became a matter of urgency.

The Articles of Confederation were a major improvement over the past government of England, in which the power only belongs to a few people, the king and parliament. The Articles of Confederation allowed each individual state to have its own power. Congress could not require any state to pay taxes, nor could they require to build a national army. Preventing tyranny was a major idea and a major goal that the Articles of Confederation produced. One other improvement that the Articles of Confederation instituted was the idea of not only reducing the power of the king, but increasing the power of the people.

Following the Revolutionary War, America had just gained independance from Great Britain and needed to form a new government. The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.

The Articles of Confederation go through a long and difficult process. After the Independence War in 1776, the 13 states adopted the Articles of Confederation; it could not solve the problems in early time of America completely. It played an important role in the history of America, because these Articles influenced the Constitutional Convention and promoted the development of history of the United States. In history, Columbus discovered America land.

It introduced uniform currency, better lawmaking, amendments actually being possible to pass, and less/no rebellion. The Articles of Confederation had only one main branch: the Legislative branch. Judicial didn’t do much and the Executive branch didn’t even exist yet! Even the Legislative branch was flawed!

The construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway presented opportunity to New Brunswick, it would open up markets and jobs. Confederation would cut the cost of the Railway for new brunswick because the costs of building the railroad would be shared by the confederated colonies. Although this benefit was not guaranteed, the intercolonial railway wasn’t promised and it didn’t tell which part of the province would reek its benefits. Another reason against confederation for New Brunswick was its strong economic ties to the United States compared to the rest of the Colonies of Canada. Confederation also meant having to sever these ties and rely more on the other colonies.

The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.

In one hand, the Articles of Confederation had a weak central government, differing form the strong central government in the Constitution. The Constitution’s government had a structure of three different branches; the legislative, executive, and judicial branch; unlike the Articles of Confederation that had no structure whatsoever. The Articles of Confederation had many problems like, the poor international trade, poor foreign relations and a weak economy in contrast to the Constitution that only had one problem, the struggle over the ratification. the Articles of Confederation achieved the Northwest Ordinance and the Northwest Territory and according to a history website, the Constitution achieved that we had a system of checks and balances, that we had a bill of rights, and, eventually, the survival of a bloody civil war intact. Lastly, the Constitution had three compromises: the Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise and the Slave Trade compromise.

The Articles of Confederation was very strong in being able to have efficient relations with other countries. Since the Articles of Confederation were under the Independence War it was successfully allied with France and were on very good terms with them. The Articles of Confederation helped the United States have better relations with countries which was one of the strengths the Articles of Confederation had. It was generally noticed for making compromises, treaties with other countries and generally trading at times. The Articles of Confederation didn't have much power and this is what made it very weak.
