Competency Statement 1: To establish a safe, healthy learning environment When you are an Early Childhood educator there are some key factors that you have to keep in mind: 1. Creating a safe environment and 2. Creating and instilling in your students and yourself a healthy environment. Safety to me is a very detrimental factor in Early Childhood, because when you deal with young children you always have to watch out for their well being as if they were your own. Those parents entrust you with the care of their most prized possession and expect the best from you as their guardian. When my room is in good sanitary condition, my students spread less bacteria around the room. I keep the room sanitized and healthy by making sure i wash my hands as i enter the room, and all those entering the classroom. By washing our hands upon entering, we are lessening the probabilities of bringing outside germs into the classroom. We also make sure that when our friends sneeze, they get a tissue then immediately wash their hands to keep them crispy clean. Upon entering children wash their hands and before and after each meal. When the teachers or the adults in the classroom are preparing the meals, first thing we do is wash our hands and then put our gloves on; so that we can use them as a barrier between the food and germs. Another way i keep my learning environment healthy is by, talking about healthy eating habits. Healthy eating habits is just as important as proper hand washing; it promotes healthy eating awareness at an early age. At our center we serve the children 3 nutritious meals and during the meal times we talk about what we are eating and it can be beneficial to us. Sure, some kids won’t like the food all the time, but that’s when I take advantage of talking to them about being adventurous and trying new things. As a parent, they need to handle the situation in a certain way that help understand kids to learn from their mistakes. At young age, kids tend to be lonely and bored. As a parent they should set a time for kids even though they are busy with work in order to make the kids happy and entertained. The same situation can be related to the book called, To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee, it depicts the character Atticus as a good parent through his actions to illustrate the criteria of knowing how to handle a situation when kids make wrong choices.
Any professional working with children or young people is responsible for the care and well being of those children. Making sure that a child is safe on or out of a school setting is of paramount importance. Not only does it make a child or young person feel safe in a learning environment but it also gives the child the security to develop and achieve from an early age. For children to be effectively protected, it is essential that everyone accepts the responsibility of their role and to also be protected in that role. E.g. when escorting a child to the toilet or a child needs to be undressed due to any accident, it is vital that another member of staff or child is present as to not allow any allegations of misconduct.

Implement strategies to ensure facilities and systems operate efficiently. Develop a plan based on local, state, and federal law that ensures the safety of students and staff. Collaboratively plan and aid in implementing the following: financial budget, utilization of technology effectively, and proper coordination between all curricular programs.

Competency Statement I To establish and maintain a safe, healthy, learning environment. My goal in a child care facility would be to make sure everything is safe for the children along with the staff who would work there. To make sure that the children would want to come back and feel safe at the facility. I would want everything to be healthy for the children as well as the staff also. No one would want their children to come to an unhealthy facility.
To prevent possible abuse from those working directly with children and to prevent allegations of abuse it is important to adopt good working practices. These help young children to get a feel of what is appropriate and may help them to respond if another adult behaves differently. The basis of safe working practice is openness so that other adults in the setting can either see or know what you are doing when you are with the children.

A number of ways to establish a safe and supportive learning environment is to stay within what is deemed as conventional rules and disciplines. A typical class room layout is rows of desks and chairs facing the front, it is the usual expected layout for learners and encourages them to accept conformity, something as simple as sitting on the chairs facing the front of the classroom is reassuring to the majority that the class is safe. In days of yesteryear the students would be expected to stand up when the teacher entered the room and wait for permission to be seated, thankfully those days are in the distant past and now it is acceptable to remain talking until the teacher is ready to begin class.
In addition to this, physical needs were also met through maintenance of hygiene. The provision of school hygiene and sanitation ensured the rights of the children to acceptable hygiene practises, safe water supply, latrines and a healthy school environment in general.
