Beowulf the Epic: A three part poem written in near Omnipotentness, jumping from year to year, and character to character. It is about a man, if you can call him a man, with superhuman strength, with the ability to swim for eight days straight, breathe underwater, and to contest with nightmarish monsters in hand-to-hand combat. Just to name a few. He, notably, combats Grendel; a spawn of Cain himself. Grendel’s mother, who tries to avenge her son’s death. And a dragon of a near extinct dragon race. At the end of the book, Beowulf’s life comes to an end due to the poison in the fatal bite delivered by said dragon. Beowulf and Grendel: A movie released anywhere from 1500-2000 years after Beowulf the Epic is estimated to have been written. So it should be pretty different right? Grendel has a father, there is no dragon, there is swearing, and Beowulf lives? It isn’t so omnipotent, and Beowulf has great abilities but not the fabled abilities that are described in the Epic. This movie is nothing like the Epic Poem, …show more content…
Beowulf’s final opponent in Beowulf the Epic is a big angry dragon who had a vessel stolen from his treasure mound. Beowulf, with the help of Wiglaf, slays the dragon, but not before the dragon deals a death blow to his assassin. While bleeding profusely, Beowulf lives just long enough to digress one last time. In the movie, however, Beowulf doesn’t die, as it seems like he sails back to Geatland. There isn’t even a dragon to speak of in the movie. Beowulf the Epic had a lot of death, gory imagery, and the protagonist dies a bloody death. However, in the movie, there are borderline PG/PG-13 deaths, no blood to speak of, and Beowulf sails away to his homeland happily ever after. Why is that? The most obvious answer is to have a happy ending. (Finish
He is content with his accomplishments in the past, and in killing the dragon. In this, the Hero’s Journey is complete, and Beowulf’s incredible legacy as a hero and king
The movie is said to be a clearly epic but fiction. It really teaches us how to be brave in every trial and challenge in life. The main character Beowulf faces many strong opponents but in the end he defeated all. Beowulf wanted to be honor by his fellow soldiers and for that reason he fiercely battled with the beast, Grendel, who ate all men in sight.
The hero in the epic poem Beowulf is the main character, Beowulf. He demonstrates heroic qualities as soon as the readers are introduced to his character. Beowulf proves himself to be courageous and brave by voluntarily fighting the “undefeatable” monster, Grendel. He is greatly admired by both the Danes and Geats for his courageous acts. Although his motivation is altered to only benefit himself with the title of the greatest warrior, his plan to save the Danes is greatly appreciated by all in the land.
Beowulf is a poem that based in the 10th and 11th century that revolved around the idea of good vs evil. The poem is named after Beowulf who is a supernatural hero that slays any evil that crosses his path but is a real sweetheart when it comes to other people or the king. Beowulf is to be considered an epic poem because the hero in the story creates acts of being courageous and even superhuman in some cases, reflecting timeless values such as courage and honor, and the poem reflects unforgettable values with honor and courage. Typically in an epic poem, one will see a character or “the hero” who has outstanding courage and commit superhuman deeds and show values to other people in that era. “Then he drew himself up beside his shield./The fabled warrior in his warshirt and helmet/trusted in his own strength entirely/
In the epic poem Beowulf, the protagonist, Beowulf, faces three “monsters” at different times in his life. The poem begins with Grendel, a monster who attacks only in the dark of night, tormenting the kingdom of Hrothgar. The last two sections of the epic detail the conquering by Beowulf of Grendel’s mother and the dragon. The battle between the monsters and Beowulf represent the theme of good versus evil in the poem, as well as the fusion of pagan and Christian ideals in the changing Germanic society. Grendel’s mother’s actions directly juxtapose the role of a woman in this time period, and the greediness of the dragon with his treasure contrasts with the virtues of what would be considered a good king.
Fear has the ability to manipulate people into believing there is danger when there is not, causing them to make rash decisions. These decisions can result in a disobedience to one’s cultural beliefs, as seen in Lord of the Flies and Beowulf. Even though the characters from Lord of the Flies and Beowulf come from cultures built around nobility and loyalty, fear tears them apart from the society they had worked hard to achieve. Although the boys from Lord of the Flies tried to keep their culture’s morals, the fear of the unknown caused the children to betray their Culture.
In the epic Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is depicted as a heroic figure who fights monsters and defends the weak. During its time, Beowulf would be considered a great hero, however in today 's standards Beowulf would only be considered a great warrior. That’s because a hero should value the lives of the people and not seek to be rewarded. Instead, Beowulf committed heroic acts for his own selfish reasons and never shows to values the lives of the people. From fighting Grendel to slaying the dragon, Beowulf only fought because he value the fame and fortune that comes along with those accomplishments.
The poem and movie of “Beowulf” are very different and they are also sort of similar. There are a lot more differences between the two than you would expect and while some of them are minor differences others are drastically different. Most movies are very different from the book they are made from. The biggest differences between the movie and poem were the three battles. The three battles have drastic differences.
Accordingly, to the textbook Beowulf death was not dramatic; however, in the movie his death was extremely dramatic. Furthermore, in the textbook before Beowulf’s death he told village man he wanted to be buried in the bricks with his ashes around the tower of his death. Moreover, in the movie, Beowulf arm was cut off causing him to lose a lot of blind, so then, he walked into the lake drifting away of his death. How did the movie and textbook version of Beowulf different? The movie and textbook version of Beowulf share particular differences.
The major flaw Beowulf showed in the movie was that he slept with Grendel’s mother. I think that because Beowulf slept with someone it lessened his standing as a hero, in my mind. Another flaw that Beowulf showed was that he was arrogant in the movie. I can overlook the fact that a hero is not perfectly sculpted or good looking. I think to be a hero you cannot have personality flaws like being self-centered or conceited.
In the movie and epic poem Beowulf there were many similarities and difference that was noticed. Beowulf was not a true as he was in the movie. However in the epic poem he was more honest and he kept his word. For example, when Beowulf doesn’t tell the truth about defeating Grendel’s mother, but in the poem he actually defeated her. On the other hand it was interesting to see the poem come to life and it made it easier to understand the concept of the story.
The film and epic poem Beowulf may seem alike because of their similar plots and characters, but when looked at deeper, it is clear that their cultural differences set them apart. Traditionally, epic poems are lengthy stories that praise the deeds of heroic warriors whilst reflecting the brutal reality of life. They expressed cultural pride and teachings, while telling everyone that we are hopeless in the hands of fate; that all human ambition ends in death. In our modern world today, movies are made to entertain, but more importantly to sell and make a profit.
The story of Beowulf isn’t just any ordinary story, but a story that has been told for centuries. A story of a hero who’s legacy has been told for so long. Beowulf’s life shows the characteristics of a true epic hero. He showed bravery, he used his strength against his enemies and in the end gave the ultimate sacrifice for his people.
Beowulf went through so much to prove he was worthy enough to protect their kingdom and defeat Grendel. The story Beowulf was a great story to read and a great movie to watch; however, the battles were very eye catching and had a lot of extravagant and heroic doings of Beowulf. The first scenario that I’m going to discuss in the movie and story of Beowulf is The Battle with Grendel. In the movie Grendel attacked Beowulf in the Heriot while everyone was dancing and singing.
Ironically in his efforts to gain fame and riches, Beowulf 's traits overlap with those of an epic hero. More important than Beowulf 's lack of morality though, is the warrior 's lack of growth throughout the story. Usually, in epic poems, the protagonists change
