Bullying occurs every day due to social pressures, cultural insensitivity, and learned behaviors during formative years, and therefore is a pervasive issue that affects both the bully and the bullied, causing self-esteem issues, mental health problems, delay of social skills, and should be addressed and prevented by parents. Bully is a very widespread problem and affect many individuals, especially students. One out of every five students report being bullied (Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center, 2016). Victims must learn to stand up for themselves. Consequences need to be required when it comes to bullying. Children need to learn to seek help as soon as possible to help stop the harassment and prevent for future harassment. Also, it can help prevent bullying towards other victims. Victims need to not walk alone, try to implant respect and even fear in the bully. Another way a victim can help themselves towards being bullied is not showing signs that they are upset (Boose, 2016). A victim can also look into seeking counseling to help have someone to vent about their feelings and experiences that affect them. Counselors have tools to help cope and deal with mental damage due to bullying whether a victim have been dealing with harassment for a short term or long term. Victims can get into healthy activities, clubs or other hobbies to stay positive and stay occupied for a busy lifestyle. In doing so it can help them gain or maintain self-esteem. Getting involved in activities or hobbies outside of school can help with a victim to experience out of sight out of mind. If students don’t try to get involved or stay involved it can even possibly end up wanting to avoid school in general. Bullies and those bullied are at highest risk of suicide (CDC , 2016). While parents and guardians need to communicate with their children or teens, the awareness of suicide needs to be talked about but in the correct way because sending the wrong message can result in negative life threatening results. Having the right communication can help a child or teen come forward if they are having thoughts of hurting themselves and even others whether it’s the bully, family or peers. Child and teens need to be educated and know that suicide is a permeant decision and is not the answer to solving the problem with the bully. Bullies may also commit suicide because they feel their power as overpowered them and hurt others and can we be people are close to
