Beowulf the heroic poem and movie were both about a warrior. The warrior name was Beowulf, a strong and brave man, who killed demonic things. During the film and text he goes to a city to kill a demon named Grendel not knowing the creature that created him is still living; Grendel’s mother comes back for revenge. In the text Beowulf kills her, but in the movie it is very different; Beowulf and Grendel’s mother create something very evil and stronger than Grendel. The city starts to feel safe again not knowing another demon is among them. Beowulf the poem and movie had several differences, Beowulf and the characters actions, attitudes, and some events changed.

Grendel’s mother arrived at the Mead hall attacking everyone and kidnaps one of Hrothgars very best friends; she takes him to her lair and kills him. Things were very different in the movie; instead of taking Hrothgars friend she killed everyone on the Mead Hall except for Beowulf. Beowulf then goes looking for Grendel’s mother; he enters her lair with a horn, hearing a voice talking to him and sees Grendel’s body on the table. Grendel’s mother appears looking beautiful to Beowulf. Out of anger she slices her sons head off and seduces Beowulf, she tells him to give her a son since he killed her only son. Grendel’s mother tells Beowulf as long as the horn stays in her lair she will not attack his Hrothgar’s people again. Beowulf brings Grendel’s head back to show the Danes and lies about killing Grendel’s mother. In the poem, Beowulf swims to the bottom of the lake knowing Grendel’s mother would follow him. She meets him at the bottom of the lake, they begin fighting at some point she gets the best of him, but Beowulf gets back up and starts winning. Beowulf the slams her to ground and looks around, he sees a sword only giants can lift. She and Beowulf had a son, which was a dragon that terrorized the city, after the horn returned back to Beowulf. Beowulf tries to return the horn back to Grendel’s mother but she doesn’t want it; him and his soldiers attack the dragon. The dragon blast fire out of his mouth burning the city and its people. Beowulf jumps off a cliff onto its back with a sword stabbing him, riding the dragon until he cuts his wing and can’t fly anymore. He then swings around the dragon trying to rip his heart out; he reaches inside of the dragon’s chest area, but can’t get to its heart, Beowulf then cuts his arm off giving him more advantage to grab the heart. He grabs the dragon’s heart and pulls it out, causing him and the dragon to fall to their death. Beowulf dies telling the truth about him and Grendel’s mother to Wiglaf. The difference in the text is a thief stole from the dragon, provoking it to get upset and take action towards the city. Beowulf and his soldiers proceed to the dragon’s castle to terminate it; Beowulf has to fight the dragon himself, because his men are scared. Wiglaf told them that they are acting cowardly for not helping their king, he then steps in to save his dying king. Beowulf and Wiglaf kill the dragon, but Beowulf dies. He dies being greedy, telling Wiglaf he wants to see the treasure and how he wants people to remember
This could have also swayed Beowulf to leave and give up, but he kept going. His great courage and selflessness really shine in these moments. With no support except for Wiglaf, Beowulf continued to the dragon’s lair. After a crucial battle with the dragon, it is vanquished, but Beowulf is injured. He dies an honorable death, having spared his kingdom of the dragon.
Then he goes to Beowulf’s side and helped fight the dragon. This causes the dragon to strike again, which leads to another setback for the heroes. On the dragon’s third onslaught, he draws blood. Wiglaf get past the flames in strikes the dragon. Leading to Beowulf to deliver the fatal wound, after all of this Beowulf senses that he is near death.
Soon after, Grendel’s mother wanted vengeance for her son and begun to kill more men in Herot. Beowulf found the mother’s home and killed her and Grendel at once. Towards the end of the epic poem, he also defeated a dragon with the help of Wiglaf. Other soldiers went to the cave with Beowulf but when he needed their help, they all cowered away while Wiglaf went to help his king. The scene showed how not everyone can face the same bravery as Beowulf once did.
Grendel had being killing and terrorizing Hrothgar’s people. The news of Grendel had travel to the land of the Geats and Beowulf had come to provide assistance to Hrothgar. One day after Beowulf and Grendel’s fight, where Beowulf tears off the demons’ arm, the monster’s mother came to vengeance her son’s death. She was also defeated and killed by Beowulf, for which he received many gifts and praise by Hrothgar and his wife Wealhtheow.
She gets very angry, and while the people of Herot are sleeping, she comes down to kill some of the men as revenge. Beowulf eventually kills both Grendel and his mother, and the town celebrates once more. After the celebration, low and behold a dragon needs to be slain, by none other than the almighty Beowulf himself. The dragon is angry because
Beowulf is injured in the fight, and he dies along side his defeated
Have you ever watched a movie based on a book that told the exact same story? To me, for some reason, books always seem to be the better one out of the two. I feel that in novels, the author develops the story with as many details as possible, while in movies that aspect doesn’t appear in the same way. There aren’t as many details in films since it has to last for a certain amount of time, but books can last for as many pages as the author would like them to. When I read, the fascinating novel “Beowulf,” I really enjoyed how the author made me use my imagination to create a picture of the world that the characters were living in.
Most movies have a few differences between the book and poem they are originated from. The battles in the movie and poem were probably the biggest differences between the two. Both the movie and poem are similar and
The movie and poem Beowulf share many differences, attack of Herot Hall, death of Grendel and his mother, also tragedy death of Beowulf. In the movie, Grendel began attacking Herot Hall; however, in the textbook, he started off attacking the people whom lived in
There were many differences between the book and the movie. The main difference is in the book Beowulf kills Grendel's mother and in the movie they sleep together. A second difference is Beowulf did not have a son because he kills Grendel’s mother before he could sleep with her. Also in the poem, another difference was that Beowulf kills her with a giant sword. Another difference between the movie and the book is that Beowulf didn't cut his own arm off to kill his only son.
There are many differences that stood out in both the epic poem and movie. Such as, in the poem Beowulf tracks Grendel’s Mother down in a lake and commences fighting her in armor and with the sword. During the fight Beowulf’s sword breaks, and Grendel’s Mother tries to stab him, but Beowulf’s
The film and epic poem Beowulf may seem alike because of their similar plots and characters, but when looked at deeper, it is clear that their cultural differences set them apart. Traditionally, epic poems are lengthy stories that praise the deeds of heroic warriors whilst reflecting the brutal reality of life. They expressed cultural pride and teachings, while telling everyone that we are hopeless in the hands of fate; that all human ambition ends in death. In our modern world today, movies are made to entertain, but more importantly to sell and make a profit.
Beowulf is the main hero in the poem, and he travels to the land of the Danes to help King Hrothgar get rid of the monster Grendel. After having slain Grendel, there is still a huge crisis present. Grendel’s mother comes to the Hall of Heorot to avenge the death of her kinsmen by killing Aeschere. Aeschere is one of Hrothgar’s most trusted advisors, and his loss bear’s heavy on Hrothgar’s heart. In the culture displayed in Beowulf, the bonds of friendship and kinsmanship are very important to the characters.
In the book he attacked while everyone was drunk and passed out sleep. When Grendel attacked Beowulf was laying on the table naked. The soldiers tried to use weapons on Grendel; however, his skin was magically treated so no weapon could harm him. In the movie Beowulf stabbed him with a knife, but he soon realized he had special skin; however, Beowulf dropped the knife and fought Grendel with his hands. In the book Beowulf didn’t use any weapon on Grendel at all.
Beowulf manifests the features of a literary epic by reflecting the Anglo-Saxon warrior culture from which it came from, and containing great, descriptive language and plots that include great battles and conflicts. The warrior culture is evident from the explanation of the story in Journeys where Beowulf, along with his group of warriors, sails to Denmark, ready to defeat Grendel to the very end of the excerpt where defeating Grendel brings Beowulf honor, pride, and glory. “He was happy with his / nightwork / and the courage he had shown” (826-828). Great battle and conflict, as well as descriptive detail, can be seen in this line from Beowulf and Grendel’s battle, “Every bone in his body [Grendel’s] / quailed and recoiled, but he could not
