One would think the general is talking about hunting animals with Rainsford when he is actually talking hunting Rainsford himself. It is also ironic when General Zaroff is described as “civilized”. General Zaroff and Sanger Rainsford are more similar than they are different. Aside from their diverse ethnicities, age, and initial opinions on The Most Dangerous Game, the two men are practically the same. Despite bearing a few minor differences, the similarities between Zaroff and Rainsford remarkably pronounced. The next conflict introduced is man vs man. However Man vs. Man is the most obvious conflict. Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting for different goals, Zaroff is fighting for fun and amusement and Rainsford is fighting for his survival and his chance to leave the island. Often people see this same game in life, gaining a sense of trust with each other which will ultimately lead to heartbreak. Zaroff invites Rainsford to stay in his home, just to try and kill him later. Zaroff does all of these fatal games just to never take credit for them.
This helps with the thrill of the hunt as well because Zaroff has read some of the books Rainsford has written, which helps him know about Rainsford and his hunting abilities.. Rainsford being a famous hunter makes Zaroff want to compete against him to confirm he is as good of a hunter as he discloses to be. Not only do the characters show some comparability, but the plot events do as well. Specifically, Rainsford ends up in the sea which results in him ending up on the island. This is how the entire setting and main points take off.
Both Rainsford and Zaroff share common passions, skills and ideology. Initially, there is admiration between both characters, but their similarities become the cause of the conflict. Rainsford murders Zaroff and has put an end to the murderous human

“The Most Dangerous Game,” a short story by Richard Connell, dives into the discussion over whether animals have feelings, and if it is fine for them to be hunted for a human’s own entertainment. The main protagonist, Sanger Rainsford, an American author and hunter, and the antagonist, General Zaroff, a hunter as-well, have similar views in the concept of dominance and killing animals for their own pleasure. Zaroff and Montresor are two characters in the short stories ‘’ The Most Dangerous Game’’ by Richard Connell and ‘’The Cask of Amontillado’’ by Edgar Allen Poe. Montresor and Zaroff are both wealthy characters who are the antagonist in their respective stories and murder other characters. The motivation behind the killing is what makes them apart from each other. Both of these characters are considered crazy but Montresor seems saner than Zaroff. Do they both have an exceptional excuse for what they did?
