Rivalry Between Rainsford And General Zaroff

The story-“The most dangerous game” is written by the author Richard Connell during the time of World War-I. The most dangerous game is a short story about a hunter named Sanger Rainsford who is marooned on an island after accidentally falling off a yacht. After Rainsford falls, he frantically swims to the nearest island in search of food and shelter. However this deserted island is not an ordinary island. This is called Ship Trap Island.

The Most Dangerous Game While reading the short story, “The most Dangerous Game”,Rainsford killed General Zaroff Others might say it was okay for Rainsford to kill General Zaroff but however he was not justified in killing Zaroff. During “The Most Dangerous Game” The Author says “It must have courage, cunning, and, all of the above. It must be able to reason.”

Yes, Rainsford was justified in the killing of General Zaroff. Rainsford was justified in the killing of General Zaroff during the story when Zaroff is talking about how the game works. Before Zaroff put Rainsford into the woods, he was explaining how he gets hunting clothes and a hunting knife. If Rainsford wins he will have to face Ivan. For instance, “Ivan the other was that his quarry has escaped him”(Connell 9).It is showing how it was justified because he had trapped Ivan in a Quarry [quarry is defined is a large pit].

In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford fits the category of Zaroff’s ideal animal to hunt, because Rainsford displays the attribute to reason by being able to make many life saving decisions throughout the story. Rainsford has the ability to reason from the very beginning of the story, because he was able to remain calm to make a life saving decision in an unnerving situation, which proves that he fits the quarry for Zaroff to hunt. As he was in the water, he recalls the gunshots he heard while he was still on the yacht, “they had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength” (Connell 14). Whereas most people would have panicked in the situation

The most dangerous game was written by Richard Connell in 1924. It is a short story which has mystery, suspense and adventure. Also, it shows how people do their best to survive in different situations. This story consists of two main characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The story begins on a yacht in the Caribbean Sea.

He is now not a hunter, but the hunted. He must now face the struggle of trying to hide, run, and defend himself from getting killed from Zaroff. But what Zaroff dosen`t know , is that Rainsford is a lot smarter than

Zaroff introduces Rainsford to the most exhilarating sport of hunting humans by saying, “It supplies me with the most exciting [hunt] in the world… Every day I hunt, and I never grow bored. . .” (Connell 7). Zaroff’s actions are selfish because he only cares for his thrill and never cares how that impacts his victims. To Zaroff, Rainsford is the ultimate prey.

Sometimes killing people could be for a good reason. Rainsford slaughtered General Zaroff because of self-defense. This short story demonstrates that Rainsford killed General Zaroff for either self-defense or murder; however, it strongly relates to self-defense. Sometimes people have to protect themselves and others protect them from everyone

Most people when they hear “The Most Dangerous Game” they think of bull riding or other dangerous games that don’t involve death. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful cliff hanging story that follows the days of a castaway on the island of a crazed hunter. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.

Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff

He soon finds shelter and meets a Russian hunter named General Zaroff. Zaroff arrogantly explains to Rainsford on how hunting has bored him, as he has never lost a fight against an animal. He then explains he hunts humans, as they can reason. Zaroff challenges Rainsford to a hunting battle, and when he loses, he realizes that he’s not the best hunter. The first point of pride was when Zaroff is boasting about how he’s never lost a fight to an animal before.

And the answer was, of course, `it must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason… Great Guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder. ’”(Connells 11). Referring to the quote, it exposes how Zaroff tells about the prey and Rainsford got surprised. He even tells Rainsford that he hunts different types of people.

Tanner Toussaint In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.

Rainsford from the story “The Most Dangerous Game” used his skills to survive being hunter by General Zaroff. Throughout these three stories, three survival traits are used to live through harsh conditions. Resourcefulness, determination, and willpower are the traits one must have to be a survivor. Resourcefulness is the survival trait used by Rainsford in “The Most Dangerous Game.” On page 20 of “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford constructs a Malay man-catcher trap as an attempt to kill General Zaroff.

Throughout the story the reader sees how Zaroff “plays” with Rainsford as he hunts him and not once does Zaroff think he will lose to Rainsford. This is a clear example of the theme to never underestimate your opponent skills or the underdog may overtake you. Connell illustrates this theme through foreshadowing, irony, and, man vs. man. To help us visualize, foreshadowing shows how Rainsford, being the underdog, will overtake Zaroff who underestimates Rainsford. Although Rainsford is not seen as being the weaker link, Rainsford showed he did not pity those below him: “‘Who cares how a jaguar feels all they understand is fear.’
