Books vs. Movies
The constant battle between watching a movie and reading a book has lead to many disagreements. Many valid arguments can be made in favor of each as well as each having it’s own disadvantages, yet the question still remains unanswered. Books and movies have many similarities and differences when it comes to experience, development, and imagery. To begin, there are a variety of reasons that make movies not as good as books. The experience, the depth, and the imagery are the three main aspects one needs in order to understand why movies are not as good as books. Movies are often said to be an experience to broaden knowledge. When one watches a movie, they are usually focused on the characters and special effects instead of the plot due

When one watches a movie, the experience is not life changing no matter how thrilling the experience was. It is not engraved into the brain as it is only a temporary adrenaline rush. When watching a movie, one feels as though one is watching the story from outside and not truly experiencing it through the main character. In addition, movies are often two hours long. If a movie was based on a book, which it often is, there would not be enough time to include minor details. Movies don’t have a complex storyline as movies shorten the story down to a simple plot with slight similarities to the book it is based off of. Most of the time, the script does not do the story justice. Movies are limited as it relies on visual stimulation and having to tell a story primarily through dialogue. It is tough for filmmakers to depict the inner conflicts of a character’s mind thus making it very shallow and lacking in depth. Furthermore, movies are visual and auditory. Whilst watching a movie, one
It is crazy to think how pop culture can point to the things it works so hard to reject, but in the case of Divergent by Veronica Roth, parallels between it and the gospel abound. Divergent is set in a dystopian Chicago in which the citizens are divided into 5 factions; the brave, the selfless, the intelligent, the honest and the kind. The story follows Tris Prior, a sixteen year old girl who realizes her Divergence, or possession of characteristics of more than one faction. The novel and film adaption of Divergent include many similarities to the gospel, notably the emphasis on a choice of commitment, the concept that we need more than one characteristic to grow, that salvation is brought about through sacrifice, and that humankind is at its heart, evil.
Have you ever watched a movie based on a book that told the exact same story? To me, for some reason, books always seem to be the better one out of the two. I feel that in novels, the author develops the story with as many details as possible, while in movies that aspect doesn’t appear in the same way. There aren’t as many details in films since it has to last for a certain amount of time, but books can last for as many pages as the author would like them to. When I read, the fascinating novel “Beowulf,” I really enjoyed how the author made me use my imagination to create a picture of the world that the characters were living in.
There are undeniable traits that films can hold that cannot plainly be seen within the text. Things like location setting where, in film, the viewer is able to have a wider picture of the environment, community, and a larger setting allows for more physical movement than say what would be possible on a stage. Also, film language can also be a big addition when understanding the good elements of film to theater. For example, where the camera is placed, picking up different angles—possible view points from multiple characters enables a more round story. While actors and costumes add other elements in both cases, the budgets for both projects are often vastly different.
Most of the time the script or book is better than the movie, right? Well, in this case, the movie is way better than the book. How the stories were different and how the director's choices made the movie better. First of all, the movie has way more details on why Mrs. Stevenson's husband has been gone for longer than he usually is.
Books and movies have been around for many years and lately movie directors have been making more and more movies based off of books. Most people do not know that around 50% of movies are based off of books. Although, it really depends on what people mean when a movie is “based” off a book. Some directors say a movie is based off a book, but has a different plot and seems totally different. So, in order to keep true to the book, directors keep the plot relatively the same, but there are a few times they decide to change the message entirely by changing just a few key events.
When reading a story and comparing it to the movie version, you will find that there can be similarities and differences. The authors Nathaniel Hawthorne, Katherine Anne Porter,Washington Ivring, wrote short stories that show examples of similarities and differences compared to their movie format. This paper compares and contrasts plot, setting, and characters that are determined through analysis of the stories text and the movies selections. In these three short stories there are similarities and differences within the plots that go through the books and movies.
Let me ask you a question Do you prefer movies or books? Do you think a book benefits you more or a movie benefits you more than a book? What I think is that neither is better. They Both have unique qualities. The reason is because I think that when you read the book you can see what you read in your mind and when you see the movie you see what you read.
Hercules film/book comparison Edith Hamilton’s Mythology portrays the story of Hercules with a perfect complexity that can be understood by even the simplest of minds. Of all the tales told in Greek mythology, Hercules surpasses them all as one the greatest heroes of ancient Greece. According to the novel, Hercules is a story about an exceedingly strong demi-god who accomplishes a plethora of tasks never completed by man before including, the twelve labors he must forsee to purify his soul after killing his family. The Hollywood version starring Dwayne Johnson takes the basic knowledge from Greek mythology and creates a storyline with a more realistic rendition. In the movie he is rumored to be half god and half man but, in
One reason why the story is better than the movie is that you can be more connected to the characters. The character’s
From Page to Screen There is no arguing that movies are great to watch every once in awhile. You get to see a different world than the one that you live in. These new environments are fun to explore, except when they're not as they were meant to be. Novels create a descriptive world that a movie can't help but fall short of.
4-27-16 Thinking About Books and Final Looks A big mantra of my childhood was “You can’t watch the movie until you’ve read the book first.” My childhood literacy devoted mother may have used this in an unnecessary attempt to add the ever growing stacks of books I plowed through, or, more likely, because she believes that you need to set up a story in your mind before you watch someone else’s interpretation. I’ve been thinking about this philosophy in relation to the two films I’ve watched this week. These musings combined with those on the course questions, about the avenues opens or opportunities created by teaching with film, have caused me to think. Both of the film I watched for this week, Everything is Illuminated and Naked Among Wolves are based on books.
Movies are usually shallowed, watered down version of books. Take The Kite Runner for an example; an amazing book with engrossing characters and a breathtaking story while, the movie (although a fantastic movie on its own) leaves a bland taste in your mouth compared to the movie. The Kite Runner is an Afghan-American story by author Khaled Hosseini and was a New York Times best seller. 4 Years
The people who need a novel has different imagination and can feel something compare with the people watching the movie. At time, the reader can feel happy, sad, fun and challenge . For example The Hunger Games novels. Reading a novel and watching a movie have different but have a similarities which is interest reader to read a novel. Firstly, the similarities is the characters in novel and movie a normally same.
Movies can bring a world to life before our eyes. It makes characters into living, breathing flesh and blood. Books on the other hand, let you live everything as though we there as part of the story. There have been great movies made from books, but sometimes, movie versions of books tend to upset readers because they are not exactly like the book. When a Movie director works from an adapted screenplay, the results are different from reading the book.
Literature can be viewed in many different lights. That’s all the more reason for a reader to experience itself first hand. People shouldn’t “wait until the movie comes out” because they wouldn’t actually be experiencing the writers work first hand and form their own opinions. Instead, they are watching another person’s interpretation of the work forced to accept their visions of the characters, and their opinions of how the literary work should be viewed. This has been going on for a very long time now and it belittles the importance of literature.
