Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, is seen as a true piece of American Literature that presents itself at the core of McCarthyism in the bitter wake of Communists spies inside the United States. In many cases the main character of Abigail Williams is considered secondary to that of John Proctor. However, many years later, Miller writes a screenplay for the 1996 film adaptation starring Hollywood heavyweights like Winona Ryder; whose portrayal seems to allow the character of Abigail to have more room to expand. It is to my opinion that the author does this to present a more rapid and truthful motif that differs from that of the 1950 ‘witch hunt’ for communists. It is shown in the differing aspects of Abigail’s character from play to screen, …show more content…
There are undeniable traits that films can hold that cannot plainly be seen within the text. Things like location setting where, in film, the viewer is able to have a wider picture of the environment, community, and a larger setting allows for more physical movement than say what would be possible on a stage. Also, film language can also be a big addition when understanding the good elements of film to theater. For example, where the camera is placed, picking up different angles—possible view points from multiple characters enables a more round story. While actors and costumes add other elements in both cases, the budgets for both projects are often vastly different. Language was also another element that Miller had to adjust from both projects. If you look in the text, the language used is far more relevant to that of the time period. The screenplay however, uses a similar form of this historical speech. Though, the text was written in the language patterns of the late 1700’s, when compared to the more modern Americanized version is lessened by Miller who states, “The Problem was not to imitate the archaic speech but to try to create a new echo of it which would flow freely off American actor’s tongues,” an important field to maintain when writing dialogue for
Abigail Williams is a menace. The person who wrote The Crucible is Arthur Miller. In the 1950s as a way of pointing out the insanity of the communist Red Scare, led by Senator Joseph McCarty of Wisconsin. He would target American citizens accused of being communists. In The Crucible, Abigail Williams could have ended the hysteria by avoiding an affair, not practicing witchcraft, and remaining a loyal religious person.
The Crucible “Be careful not to mistake insecurity and inadequacy for humility! Humility has nothing to do with the insecure and inadequate.” In today’s society people can be insecure about anything especially when it comes to relationships, societal expectations, or just the way we perceive ourselves compared to others. Elizabeth Proctor started to blame herself and become insecure over her husbands morbid act of Infidelity, and Abigail Williams became insecure over John Proctor choosing his wife Elizabeth rather than her. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there was many signs of so called “witchcraft” which had led to many false accusations of this crime that caused many unnecassary hangings of numerous people.
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953. Arthur Miller wrote the play because he was inspired by McCarthyism. McCarthyism was the hunt for communists that was taken too far. In The Crucible he presented a universal message. He was comparing how communists did exist and witches did not, but yet they were both taken as serious.
During the late 17th century a total of 200 people were accused of participating in witchcraft, while 19 people lost their lives to the mass hysteria. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, a group of girls start a huge uproar in Salem, Massachusetts when they start screeching about Salemites being associated with the Devil. Throughout the play write, it shows the consequences of mass hysteria and how it puts people's lives in danger. Abigail Williams causes a wave of mass hysteria and because of her trickery, innocent people have died by her and the other girl’s actions, for this Abigail is the most unforgivable character in The Crucible.
In The Crucible, many of the characters were slightly altered from the original Salem Witch Trials to make the story more interesting. Abigail Williams was one of those characters. She has several changes, some major, some minor, but they affect the story in a big way. While there are many differences, there are also some historically accurate things about her thrown in as well.
Abigail Williams’ Influence Is it okay for a person to lie and hurt other people just to keep him or herself safe? In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Abigail Williams lies, a lot, to keep herself safe. Throughout the story, many people are accused of witchcraft. When a person is accused of witchcraft, it is very easy for them to get out of the accusation if they lie. The lies that are told shifts the belief of who knows witchcraft, and Abigail Williams uses those lies to gain influence over other people.
Arthur Miller said in an interview once, “ I took creative license with her character to make the connection between sexuality and politics more dramatic,” (Shmoop). This is one of the reasons Arthur Miller made Abigail Williams in The Crucible so different compared to the real Abigail. Abigail Williams was an 11 year -old girl who lived in Salem and worked for the Proctor family, John and Elizabeth, before the time of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Before the trails even started, Abigail and her cousin, Betty Parris, got into fortune telling their future like whom they would marry and what their social status would be. After a while they got the other girls in town to start playing their fortune telling game and soon the adults saw it as
In The Crucible, there could be many suspects to blame for the innocent deaths that happened in Salem. Proctor could be blamed for the innocent deaths because he lied about his affair with Abigail. Speaking of Abigail... in my opinion Abigail Williams is the one to blame for the innocent deaths because of the lies she told, the accusations she made, and the affair she had with John Proctor. Abigail Williams told many, many lies in The Crucible. The reason the witch trials began in the first place was because of the lie she told about being in the woods.
In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail William’s flaws: lust, vengeance, and jealously that led her to be responsible the most for the tragedy of the witch hunts in Salem. Abigail Williams started the entire suspicion of there being active member of witchcraft throughout Salem, Massachusetts. She did this for her own benefits and used trickery to get what she wanted. Abigail was corrupt and only cared for her own desires. There are many reasons that these flaws are crucial to the outcome of the play.
Adolescent minds are the most intelligent kind of mind. A young brain is filled with creativity, imagination and innocence. Though the thought process of a teen is assumed to be selfish there are other factors involved. A combination of these characteristics seems almost dangerous. One would undermine a juvenile to use these qualities to manipulate the court for their own selfish wishes or pleasures.

One common question about The Crucible is how Abigail Williams is the most evil force in the play. It is shocking when a girl talks back to authority out of disagreement, but few go as far as Abigail Williams. While she may only be 11 years old, her manipulative and vengeful personality allows her fool her Uncle and later turns a whole town against each other. She is really a master of manipulation and trickery, and she gets herself into affairs without punishment and has threaten all who oppose here. Abigail really is the devil in human form.
