Stephen Covey once said, “Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change.” This quote speaks to me on a personal level. In life there is always a time every individual is expected to grow into an independent, free human being. For many it may be at the beginning of college or even after having graduated from that extended education. However, I find myself taking advantage of that, “…ultimate human freedom…” in high school. Many events throughout my time here on earth have shaped me in ways I never considered possible until after college. I’ve always strived to be an open, outgoing, and independent person and many aspects have strengthened that aspect. My society, family, and passions have impacted my 17 years of life the greatest. …show more content…
It’s almost a guarantee these days that everyone will encounter some form of disappointment. Why is that? That is because no one is perfect. This phrase has been preached to me since the beginning of time. However, no person has to let the disappointing times control their life. One of our four endowments, conscience, an inner feeling or voice viewed as acting as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one's behavior, helped and still helps me strengthen my character for the future. Society and disappointment have given me a new appreciation and new avenue for life down the road. We don’t need to embrace the bad times but build from them to become a stronger
I agree with Winston Churchill, without failing sometimes people will not be successful. It may happen sometimes, but most people fail again and again until they finally succeed. It is near impossible to always succeed, humans are not perfect we make mistakes and fail, but as long as we keep our enthusiasm up and keep trying then we will eventually have success in most things we pursue in life. Do you think that we are all just born perfect, no we have to experiment with things and often fail in the process. I agree with Winston Churchill, because we are human we live and learn, without failing the first few times you will never learn, and if you keep your enthusiasm high even when you continue to fail, then eventually you will succeed.
Every day, multitudes of things are competing for our attention. Billboards line every street, commercials interrupt every enticing program, and our phones are constantly beckoning us to check them. And no, this is not the beginning of another trite piece of literature that is going to complain about how the growth of advertising and technological innovation is the decline of the human race. In fact, I embrace it. The world is changing, and with so much to be involved in, competition for our attention is healthy and necessary to keep things that we want to see accessible.
Four years ago, I left the shores of Nigeria to pursue a higher education at the University of Ottawa. I know most people when they are younger are not sure of what career path to follow, ye I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer. Ever since I could remember, I have always felt deep compassion towards other human beings. It is disappointing to watch people lose their basic human rights. My program has educated me and changed my worldly views.
The dream of going to college has been present since I remember. However, I lived in a low income household in Spain, and at that time my family was going through a great depression, lack of financial stability, and my parent’s relationship was not at its best; consequently, the idea of having another expense was not a priority for the family, needless to say that college was not an option. Nevertheless, life has given me the opportunity to review my priorities, make new choices and as a result, I decided to pursue a higher education. I became a displaced homemaker after my divorce in 2008 in Washington State, when I decided to move away and start a new life in Colorado. We were only us, my daughter and me.
When I was younger, one of my favorite things to do was to hop in my grandpa’s old, red Chevy pickup and ride down to our family’s farm with him. We would spend all day doing various jobs including scouting crops. Each summer I would spend more time scouting crops with my grandpa. He would share stories about particular growing seasons that he remembered and he shared a vast amount of agronomic knowledge with me. Over time, scouting with my grandpa turned into a passion.
Malcolm X once said that "Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today". Education will always be the reason why the future continues to extend itself. The Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Academy that I am enrolled in has taught me that all four aspects play a role on many levels of society and have a tremendous impact on the future. With influence from the academy, I have the goal to work for National Aeronautics and Space Administration, famously known as NASA. In order to work for NASA, I have to take small steps to achieve my goal.
The journey to Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne was definitely not straight forward. As my senior year in high school commenced about a year ago I was sure IPFW was not where I would end up. I had arranged a plan and was set on pursuing it, but one thing life has taught me is that things don’t always go the way you expect. That is what eventually turned my path around to IPFW—the unexpected. Now that I made it here I am more ready than ever to start chasing after my dreams and accomplishing my goals.
Oliver Wendell Holmes once said “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” When we experience something for the first time the way we look at the world changes. We start to encounter life in a way we never thought we would. As past experiences begin to accumulate the way we perceive new things is formed from historic events in our life. In this short essay I will discuss how I came to understand myself, and how my ideology was formed.
From a very young age, I was keenly interested in computers. The world of the computer always caught my attention, and I wanted to seek more knowledge in this particular field. Computers always seem like a mystery to me, I wanted to know how they work and how exactly they perform tasks in few seconds which humans could take more time to complete. This interest never left me, only growing more profound and passionate about every new discovery I made. From communicating with an artificial intelligence to seeing the wonders of the Internet for the first time, computers have left me fascinated with just how much power yet mystery they hold.
Like everyone else in this world, I have had struggles. There's disappointment and obstacles in everybody's life.” - El DeBarge. Disappointment is part of everyone’s lives, every single of of us has faced disappointment before. Disappointment goes along the lines of finding out something didn’t go as planned, and now you are feeling sad and discouraged.
I decided to pursue a degree in higher education to better myself and to answer a calling. I have always had the passion to become a teacher but never finished my degree. I kept finding excuses as to why I couldn’t finish. Therefore, I finally decided that there will always be obstacles in the way, however if I wanted to pursue my calling then I would have to trust that it would all work out. I feel that obtaining this degree will give me a greater since of purpose in my life.
From the very beginning I always strived to be my very best. When I was younger I always wanted to be like the older students at my school by being amazing in athletics and academics. Most importantly I wanted to be like my older sisters. They were the golden students in grade school with every teacher wanting to have them in their class, and this all encouraged me to be like them. I wanted to be exactly the same, but really I aimed to be a perfect student.
Please strongly consider my request to switch my current schedule, as my interests have dramatically changed, and I now have a newfound exuberance for school. In the past, I used to coast through school and found that suited me well. I had little motivation to increase my boundaries and challenge myself to grow as a person. After spending time with some highly influential individuals, my ideas about school have changed. I now view school as a way to become greater, as opposed to my prior view as simply a time that must be spent.
Adversity and change are inevitable: our perspectives shift, conflicts arise, and mistakes are made, but consequently, our minds grow and flourish. In our increasingly complex society, I believe that people need to allow themselves the room to broaden their horizons for the sake of making the most of their abilities, interests, and cognitive capacities. In my case, I believe that the first step toward widening my own breadth of knowledge is the pursuit of a Master of Business Administration degree. My undergraduate majors encompass functions of management, accounting, leadership, communication, marketing, and human resources.
Every human has four endowments self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom. The power to choose, to respond, to change. The ability to be independent is something that not everyone possesses. You need to be independent in order to survive in the world.
