Henry Mintzberg stated that persons use "strategy" in a variety of ways, in his 1994 book, The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning, points. Among these the most common are that a strategy is a plan, a "how," a means of getting from here to there, a strategy is a pattern in actions over time, strategy is position and a strategy is perspective, that is, vision and direction.
Strategies emerge over time as intentions and a changing reality correlate (Mintzberg, 1994). British Council (2009) states that an approach is a way of looking at teaching and learning, approaches deal with general philosophies of teaching and strategies with specific actions. The goal of this paper is to identify and explain briefly some of these approaches and strategies.

Clinical teaching can be defined as teaching and learning aimed toward and directly involving, the patients and their specific problems or diagnoses (Spencer, 2003). Teaching in the clinical environment and its approaches will vary depending upon the level of the students being taught ( Ramini & Leinster, 2008). In the time gone by, the focus of nursing education was mainly on theoretical education hence causing a great gap between theoretical and clinical education, theory and practical as lamanly put. As a result of such it was reported by a vast numbers of nursing researchers that student nurses lacked practical skills inspite of the great amount of theoretical knowledge. The quality of care being delivered decreased daily because of the number of unskilled nursing students that have been placed into the health care …show more content…
It is known as such because of the limited time availability for clinical teaching, it gives way for a simple framework for teaching during daily patient care (Neher et al., 1992). Muthamilselvi, (2014) stated that teaching in the clinical setting is supported by mutual trust and respect. Clinical learning and teaching should be aimed toward focus on essential knowledge, skill and attitude. As it relates to nursing there are teaching strategies and approaches such as: Bedside Clinic which always help to study the specific problems associated with a particular disease or disorder, the patients’ presence is always required for this. It can be conducted by the either the head nurse of a particular ward or the clinical instructor. Student nurses get an opportunity to observe, analyze and be a part of decision making in nursing care and because of this they remember the nursing measures for longer time periods since they are directly involved. Nursing Care Conference is almost identical to the bedside clinic but is different because the patient does not have to be present for the class. When the group has themselves familiarized with the patient, this method is usually chosen. Both methods can be instrumental in the evaluation the students and should be planned earlier for maximum effectiveness. Although it is so the nurse instructor could promote on spot evaluation at times. Nursing Rounds is
As lifelong learning continues, it is important to focus on patients and family outcomes through teamwork collaboration, advocating, effective communication, and equally, self-driven to accomplish goals to create and coordinate activities to promote professional development, is why I have chosen to apply for the ambulatory nurse educator
Standardizing nursing practice started even from the Florence Nightingale era. Advancement of study, researches and trails provide more support for nursing practice. Care giving to an individual of couse depend upon the mentality of the nurse, but if a standard is set in the unit for the best interest of the client all professional have a model to follow. Evidence-based practice is equated with effective decision making, with avoidance of habitual practice and with enhanced clinical performance. Even with evidence practice decision making is crucial depend upon each situation.
According to Stanton, low-staffed hospitals resulted in higher incidences of poor patient outcomes. Such as, UTIs, pneumonia, and fall. However, poor patient outcomes not only result from short-staffed nurses, but can also result from inadequate nursing assistants as well. NAs play a great role in providing basic daily care of patients. These professionals are very crucial in the healthcare industry but sadly, there are NA shortages.
Nurses experienced unsatisfied work environment, fatigue, burnout and increased in career change leading to the nursing
Nursing is a most trusted and gratifying profession. As a nurse educator, I will express my passion for teaching by incorporating features such as clinical assessments, practical application of theory, evaluation, and role modeling into advanced nursing practice, from previous experiences and current experience and clinical practicum to find success and gratification in students chosen profession as well empowering leaners to develop their own strengths, beliefs, and personal attributes to become a good professional. Personally, I do have a positive attitude towards the personal and professional growth, and value ongoing learning and will stive to instill the same into my students learnig journey .. My objective as a Nurse Educator
There would be situations to challenge my clarity of being a safe practitioner in the clinical learning and development practices. For example, even though there is time pressure when administering medications to my patient with a buddy RN, I have to ask to check MIMS about pharmacological action if the drug is new to me, or to check patient’s pulse rate for a full minute. As a student nurse, I have to practice to stand up for my limited clinical skills and knowledge. The best way to improve my leading and learning skill is to actively seek guidance from the clinical facilitator and feedback from incumbent nurses.
According to Cross (2009), learning takes place not only within the formal environment, but it also happens in an informal environment such as the clinical environment of a hospital; as such the physical context of the clinical area is not primarily designed for the purpose of learning. In fact, a hospital ward has been constructed and organized to manage the sick; however, teaching and learning can occur within the ward environment, even though this in not its primary function. As a result, teaching in this environment requires adaptation and the ability to work with what is available rather than trying to produce the ideal environment. Additionally, Cross (2009), state that the primary function of teaching and learning in an informal environment position the teacher to be able to direct, enhance and sustain learning through the use of illustration. However, Sankaranarayanan and Sindhu (2012) state
Nursing Shortage is a problem we all should be aware of. There are many factors that may lead to a nursing shortage, such as having stressful and unsafe working environments, and our nurses are being overworked. This is a problem we should be aware of because it is affecting the patient care. Nurses would not have enough time to stay with a patient if they have more patients to worry about. Nurses play a big role in our hospitals and communities, “Nurses play significant roles in hospitals, clinics and private practices.
A competent nurse is knowledgeable, compassionate, holistic, ethical, a patient advocate, and integrates other disciplines in order to achieve excellence in quality patient care. I believe the road is paved with multiple opportunities for students to experience and collaborate with competent nurses. Because I believe the qualities that are characteristic of a competent nurse also are characteristic of an competent nurse educator, my teaching styles reflects my nursing practice. I believe a student 's level of commitment is influenced by my enthusiasm and passion for teaching. For me, it begins by investing my time, knowledge and experience in students.
These skills include nurse-patient relationship skill, interactional skills, basic physical examination skills, clinical encounter across the life span, therapeutic communication skills, positive attitudinal skills etc. Assessing the development of nursing skills in students should be done often and acquiring of these nursing skills should also be a continuous learning process. This indicates that extensive experiences and supervision from mentors, preceptors, supervisors, teachers, considerable time on task and involvement of students are necessary to achieve a considerable nursing skill performance. The students’ interest in practice and the environment also influences the development and acquisition of nursing skills. In this case, students’ goals should include increased self-knowledge and scientific awareness in addition to their gradual improvement in professional nursing practice.
I like how you mention the person teaching needs to know and understand the background of the patient's needs rather than just going through the motions, as nurses we are educator every day. Nurses quite often are on autopilot and multitasking, but I feel it is the nurses responsibility to make sure the patient and family understand what to expect to their care plan regarding their health. I agree the objective has to be clear on both ends. When patients needs and capabilities are considered, then the best method are utilized to approach teaching in a way they will comprehend the information provided. The information should be specific to their health issue, leaving room for questions or asking a question to assess their understanding is important.
In this course, I learned the different nursing theories and how it has been
According to Pearce and Robinson (1997), “strategy is the overall plan for deploying resources to establish a favorable position it comes from the Greek word “Strategos” meaning to lead (agein) an army(stratos) into war. It is a course of action, including the specification of resources required, to achieve a specific objective.” ‘A strategy means making clear-cut choices about how to compete.’ – Jack Welch (Former CEO, General Electric). Volberda et al (2011), writes a strategy is an integrated and coordinated set of commitments and actions designed to develop and exploit core competencies and gain a competitive advantage.
Hospital wards have been the traditional clinical placement setting for nursing students. Newton, Jolly, Ockerby and Cross (2010) purports that practice in the clinical setting is a requirement to ensure fitness to practice as a nurse. From an educational view, clinical placement is the avenue where skills, knowledge and attitudes developed in the theoretical part of the curriculum are applied, developed and incorporated. Wang, Shang and Jin (2005) asserts that after visiting the clinical area for a week, nursing students begin to dislike the nursing profession however Holsem (2010) stated that the development of confidence during clinical experiences places emphasis on the openness about expectation, time of reflection and been welcome and appreciated. If these priorities are put it place nursing students clinical experience will be effective as they look forward to gain additional knowledge and skills to tackle the world of work but if this knowledge and skills are not garnered through effective clinical experience nursing students will fail to gain confidence and high levels of competency to venture into the world of
He emphasized that businesses should strive to achieve one of the generic strategies in order to achieve a competitive advantage but Henry Mintzberg disagreed with this idea and in 1994, came up with the concept of Emergent Strategy. He argued that the organisations with constantly changing business environments need to be flexible in order to benefit from various opportunities. In his article “The fall and rise of strategic planning” Mintzberg argues that strategic planning often spoils strategic thinking, causing managers to confuse real vision with the manipulation of numbers (Mintzberg, 1994). He adds “Strategic planning, as it has been practiced, has really been strategic programming, the articulation and elaboration of strategies, or visions, that already exists”.
