Robert E Lee once said, “I would rather die a thousand deaths than surrender.” The Civil War was the deadliest war fought in American history. There was the Unionist with 2,100,000 Unionist soldiers. Also, there were the Confederacy with 1,064,000 soldiers. The Confederacy was greatly outnumbered, but would not surrender no matter the circumstance. Texas fought in the Civil War because they fought in the Battle of the Alamo before it, so they already had fought in a war for their slaves. In 1861, war broke out between the seceded states, known as the Confederacy, and the Union. Texas was the seventh state to secede to the Confederacy. They contributed 65,000 Texans to the Civil War. Texas was torn apart whether to join the Union or the Confederacy during the 1850’s. Some people wanted to join the Union while some people wanted Texas to be a part of the Confederacy. Slavery induced this, with the South supporting it while the North made it illegal in their territories. This caused opposing viewpoints in Congress. Luckily, there was a balance of free and slave states in the country, so each party had an equal say on topics. As a result, admitting new states was difficult.

The events that occurred from 1860 to 1877 characterized a period of social and constitutional change in the United States. The secession of Southern States severed the Union, marking the beginning of a Civil War. Although abolitionist movements had been going on for decades, action was finally taken with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, to the dissent of the slave labor driven South. New amendments were added to the Constitution granting universal male suffrage and equal protection to all citizens under the law, a sudden and significant lurch forward in the realm of civil rights. However, some changes were more revolutionary and successful than others.
In the era before the civil war, specifically in the era post-purchase of the Louisiana territories, sectionalism between the Northern and Southern territories spread like wildfire. The Northern states, mainly focusing on commercial and industrial economy, supported the idea of the freedom of slaves. On the other hand, the South, a mainly agricultural and rural society, supported the idea of slaves and slave labor to work in the plantations of white men. These differences would later spark many conflicts (including the Civil War), in which the North was fighting for the freedom of slaves and the South was fighting for the keeping of slaves, especially in new additional territories.

These blacks were mostly ex-slaves or their children. There were about 476,000 free African Americans at the time. A little less than half of these lived in the Northern part of America.
Since the beginning, the institution of slavery which would keep African Americans chained was bound to cause problematic for America as a whole. The controversy of African Americans were the initial reason that the Civil War even began, and they greatly shaped the course of the war through their efforts fighting for the Union which the government could not deny, they became the main reason for the war, and paved the way to the beginning of African Americans being able to grasp rights along with the hardships socially.
