Henry Clay’s American System saw the improvements of American infrastructure like the Eerie canal and improved railway system in the North. Along with improvements in communication, possible due to the telegraph, and technology, like the cotton gin in the south or the steel plow and reaper in the West. These developments in America kick started the American Market Revolution. The Market Revolution marked a change in American economics. Farmers now had easier times transporting their goods to markets and manufacturing increased greatly.

In the mid 1800s the United States was separated into two opposing forces. This separation was know as the Civil War. After not recognizing the Southern Confederacy as its own nation, the American Civil war began in 1861. The reasons for this secessions were from the causes of Political, Economic, and Social problems.

As both the North and the South mobilized for war, the relative strengths and weaknesses of the "free market" and the "slave labor" economic systems became clear with their ability to support and sustain a war economy (National Park Services 2016). In 1860, the South was still mostly agricultural and highly dependent upon the sale of cash crops to a world market. The South relied solely on a one crop economy, while the North became more and more industrialized. The South felt that since they were becoming so different from the North that secession was the only way for them to keep their economic status and protect their culture. The authors of the Constitution knew that slavery would eventually become a huge controversy and avoided dealing directly with the morality of slavery due to the fact that it was a necessary part of their economy.

Slavery was such a big problem that affected many people and were ultimately going to do something about it. The New England Quarterly published which stated "The North and the South, divided by a moral issue of the first magnitude, the one detesting slavery, the other glorifying it as the basis of its social system, were unable to understand each other and the Civil War came as an inevitable result”. Slavery had a huge impact on social, religious, and economical stance that made it hard for people to ignore such a huge issue. Since the north and south had drastically different economic systems they clashed and had huge problems with each other. Also with the rise of the Republican Party and the election of Abraham Lincoln their fear escalated and suspicions among Southern states about the future of slavery and their perceived loss of political power.

What led the Southern States to secede from the Union in 1860 and 1861? As the United States had just finished ratifying the Constitution and establishing democracy in the late 1700’s. Tensions between the North and South of the country began to rise as differences between the two were boiling over many issues both political and economic. Such issues were dealing with the laws regarding slavery and where certain jurisdictions would lie in those cases.

The South seceded because of slavery, political power, the differences in their way of life. Slavery was a major issue here in America. The South wanted slavery and the North didn’t. “Government cannot endure half slave, half free” (Doc 5).

In the Declaration of Causes of Secession, it is cited that the Constitution of the United States unjustly limited the powers of the states, giving South Carolina motive to secede. (Document A) Many more Southern states soon seceded as well, forming the Confederacy. Although the formation of the Confederacy was an act of defiance and opposition to the ideals of the Union, the idea of the Confederacy itself was not revolutionary, especially considering the early government of the newly independent colonies was based on the Articles of Confederation.

The Civil War had many men to die during the cause, less men died in the world war comparing them to the Civil War. Slavery was a cause for the southern states to secede and it could be considered as one of the major factors. Along with state sovereignty, economic, and political difference are amongst the list that caused the south to secede. Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina were the southern states that seceded and form a southern Confederacy.

To address this issue, there were many different efforts made by the federal government, individuals, and groups. Two efforts that stand out are the various Compromises undertaken by the federal government, and the slave rebellions led by enslaved people, such as Nat Turner's rebellion.
