During Abraham Lincoln’s presidency at the start of the 1860, an issue that had divided the nation was slavery. Lincoln’s election to presidency as a republic was not received well by the Southern slave states, as they thought that as a republican he was out to abolish slavery. In an effort to calm southern states and keep them from seceding from the United States, he attempts to ease them with his First Inaugural Address. In his First Inaugural Address his key points are to clam southern leaders of slave states, keep the states from seceding, and make them at ease as he enters presidency.

April 12, 1861. Confederate forces fired shots at the fort Sumpter and Union troops surrendered sparking the Civil War. Though, how did it come to this? As one can see, evidence shows the primary cause of the Civil War was slavery because of the many more slaves than free blacks, the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 fought over slave or free states, and Dred Scott fought for his freedom from slavery.

“It is good that war is so horrible or, we might grow to like it”-Robert E, Lee. Lee is saying that Texans didn’t want to go to war, but their willing to do it for their state’s rights. Events that lead up to the war was when Abraham Lincoln got elected because he was anti-slavery President, and he wanted to end slavery in the united states. Texans fought in The Civil War, to protect states rights, Texas secession, and slavery.

The United States in the years right before the Civil War was in chaos as it tried to find ways to keep the country together. Slavery induced this, with the South supporting it while the North made it illegal in their territories. This caused opposing viewpoints in Congress. Luckily, there was a balance of free and slave states in the country, so each party had an equal say on topics. As a result, admitting new states was difficult.

Civil War LEQ When the United States admitted more Western territories into the Union, their only goal was to expand the country as much as possible. They did not foresee how extending slavery into western territories could lead to a Civil War. The controversy over the extension of slavery into western territories contributed to the Civil war by politicizing the issue so no politician could be neutral on it, by creating a fight for economic influence between the North and South, and by increasing the feelings superiority/separation between the North and South.

You can see this in Document B, wherein 1858 Lincoln says this: “I have no purpose . . . to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists . . .” Later on in the same document he also states, “There is no reason in the world why the negro is not entitled to all the natural rights . . . in the Declaration of Independence- the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” While Lincoln was running for president, he promised to leave slavery alone in the South, but he also stays true to his personal morals through his time, that slavery

The event known as the Civil War had redefined the means of being a American. The actions that happened during the war helped that because of the conflicts that made the war occur. The South wanted to keep the slaves, but the North wanted the slaves to be gone and for everyone to have basic human rights, which became controversial and problematic. They divided into states, one that wanted to promote the slavery and one who wanted no slavery at all and became anti-slavery, but why did they decide to fight over it?

During the 19th century American had it southern states secede thus causing a civil war between americans and there were 2 sides the Confederates from the south and the Union from the North the war was sparked by the elections of the 16th century. After the Union kind of won the battle of Antietam Lincoln decides to make The Emancipation Proclamation Which freed all the black slaves in the North. Once the Emancipation Proclamation was accepted Lincoln decided to allow African Americans to join the Union Army. This decision ultimately helped the Union in winning the Civil War. When the African Americans were accepted in the Union Army they were put to do labor for the Union and later they were given the opportunity to go fight for their country

The Civil War, beginning in April of 1861 and ending in April of 1865 was one of the most controversial and yet influential battles in American history, but what started it is even more controversial. Leading up to the beginning of the civil war, many southern states began to succeed.. This meant that a lot of them withdrew from the federal union voluntarily. Venturing into the woods, smoke everywhere, bombs flying over your heads, people around you being shot down one by another. This was just the beginning of the Civil War, the harshest war in American history, especially for the Texans. It all started because Abraham Lincoln was elected president, and didn’t want slaves. But, why did the Texans fight? They wanted to keep slavery, protect states’ rights, and overall, for the love of their state, Texas.

Those against equality of the races tried to erase the progress Douglass and Lincoln made in their collaborations, but even they could not stop the evolution and growth of new opinions and shared ideas. At the end of reconstruction there was still negativity towards the black community, but from this time and forward, it can be safely said that Douglass and Lincoln progressed society, and achieved their goals to an extent. There is still work to be done, but in time, there will be the peace and equality that they strived to

How would you feel if you were let out of a cage just to be locked in another room? This feeling was felt by many of the blacks after they were freed in the 1850's. These blacks were mostly ex-slaves or their children. There were about 476,000 free African Americans at the time. A little less than half of these lived in the Northern part of America.

The two out four questions that I choose are to 1.) Discuss the causes of the civil war. Cite as many facts as possible to back up your analysis. And answer 2.) If the enduring vision of America is embodied in the Declaration of Independence's statements about equality and universal rights to justice, liberty, and self-fulfillment, how much progress toward those ideals had blacks and women made by 1877?

The Civil War was the biggest war in the American history as more Americans died than combined in all the other wars. I do believe that the war was ultimately fought over slavery as this was the only thing the southerners wanted. During the first half of the 19th century, while United States was growing as a nation, there was a huge drastic change in different factors such as population growth, economic growth, and westward expansion. While the North America was getting urbanized and industrialized, the southerners were still rural and wanted to expand slavery everywhere in the United States, which they also considered this as their state right which can never be justified.

Abraham Lincoln’s vs Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan Lincoln shared the uncommon belief that the confederate states could still be part of the union and that the cause of the rebellion was only a few within the states which lead him to begin the reconstruction in December of 1863. This resulted in plans with lenient guidelines and although they were challenged by Wade-Davis Bill, Lincoln still rejected his ideas and kept his policies in place. Lincoln also allowed land to be given the newly freed slave or homeless white by distributing the land that had been confiscated from former land owners however this fell through once Johnson took office. After Lincoln’s death when Johnson was elected many things started to turn away from giving blacks equal rights and resulted in many things such a black codes which kept newly freed slaves from having the same rights as whites. When Lincoln first acted after the civil war, he offered policies that would allow the confederate slaves to become part of the union again and would allow a pardon for those states.
