Civil War DBQ Essay

Most people don't know for sure why the American Civil War came to be. However, one theory that repeatedly comes up is the issue of slavery and whether it was just or wrong in America the land of the freedom throughout history and discussions. Charles B. Dew the author of, Apostles of Disunion: Southern Secession Commissioners and The Cause of The Civil War, claims to be a southerner himself and explains his thoughts and education growing up in the south. In his youth, he was taught by his family that the reason the South went to war was to fight for their State’s rights, but as an adult, he explains that it may not have been the only reason they fought after researching for himself.

The long time famous question regarding the United States’ history and the Civil War. Some argue that it was the moral standings on slavery alone, or political differences. Others say it was because of economical differences or territorial disputes. The cause of the Civil War was not just one of these reasons, it was all of them together which sparked the bloody American Civil War.

South vs North The south thought they could do what they wanted .Before the Civil War the South depended on slavery and the North was more of a Industrial. Then there were arguments about slavery should not be in the new states .People came up with compromises to fix all the fuss of which state is free and which state is a slave one.

They felt if their nation wasn 't free, life wasn 't worth living. Even though the South and North fight with such ferocity against each other our textbook never gives a clear reasons way.

The United States of America was once severely divided over an extreme issue that needed to be quickly solved before it caused any serious damage on the country. The Northern part and the Southern part of the United States of America were both having intense arguments over the issue of slavery. The North deeply accepted the abolishment of slavery in the United States of America. However, the South was strongly supporting on the ability of having slaves anywhere in the United States of America. Before the American Civil War, the North had a immoral perspective on slavery and the South had a righteous outlook on slavery they had contrasting ideas.

“May pursue and reclaim such fugitive person, either by procuring a warrant from some one of the courts, judges, or commissioners”. This shows the side of the south saying they could claim their slaves since they are considered property and it doesn't matter if they are in a free or slave state. This went against dred scott and was a main reason on why he lost in court. On the other side Frederick Douglass speech on the the Dred Scott decision he talks about how “we the people” means everybody including slaves all men and woman of the united states. He goes on to say all citizens have the same rights so how could the south deprive black people the right to freedom, life and liberty.

The Confederate States attempted to legislate against slave insurrection, which led into the Civil War. The Civil War was between the Confederate States and the Union States. During the Civil War, there were many fears because of the insurrection, affects toward the industries, affects toward food production and distribution, and there were many demands that needed to be met, such as men being drafted, and food being produced. The Emancipation Proclamation of 1862 granted freedom to the slaves in the Confederate States if the States did not return to the Union. Freedom would also only come to the slaves if the Union won the war.

During the time of the Civil War, the North was beginning to believe that slavery was not necessary and it was unjust. However, the South was holding strong to their roots, and supporting slavery to the fullest. It demonstrated differences by showing the growing rift between the two sides on the problem of slavery. The North believed in getting rid of slavery while the South supported it.

The Civil War was one of America's biggest wars and was all based on the different opinions of the North and the South. When the North wanted to outlaw slavery the South responded when South Carolina seceded from the the Union and brought many other states with them. Clearly the South did not agree with the Norths opinion and wanted to do something about it. After South Carolina seceded Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida followed shortly after.

The two out four questions that I choose are to 1.) Discuss the causes of the civil war. Cite as many facts as possible to back up your analysis. And answer 2.) If the enduring vision of America is embodied in the Declaration of Independence's statements about equality and universal rights to justice, liberty, and self-fulfillment, how much progress toward those ideals had blacks and women made by 1877?

Slavery can be defined as when a person can be the legal property of another and they are forced to obey them. A war between the north and south, The Civil War, took place from 1861 to 1865. The North, or the United States of America and the South, or the Confederate States of America fought over whether slavery should or should not be allowed. Although slavery was the ultimate cause of the Civil War, economics, politics, and morality all played a major role in the build up towards the war, as evidenced by the economies of the north and south, the power that both free and slave states wanted, and the question of whether slavery is right or wrong.     There were many causes of the Civil War, economics being the first and most important.

Everyone in the newly founded United States wanted life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but it wasn’t what many white people wanted to happen. Many people who sought this freedom were victims of riots and were killed for no other reason than the color of their skin. Even former run away and freed slaves fought side by side white men of the union to free all slaves even though the white men of the union treated them as lesser beings, they still fought for their freedoms. In this point in time everyone wanted one thing to be an American, but people of this period did not want everyone to have this gift, of being an American.

This one was without a doubt the most important reason. The South had a huge success with selling cotton and people often owned huge plantations. The people who owned the farms hired slaves to farm and collect the cotton, that way they could make their cash. (Document A.)The North however wanted to abolish, or get rid of slavery. Fearful of losing their businesses, Texans decided to fight.

The logical organization coupled with it being easy to understand, clearly shows the text’s main point. Northup’s point is that anyone can be taken into slavery. Freedom, for black people in those times, meant nothing. Free or not, it only took one person for someone to become a slave. This is a point, society most often forgets.

The war was fought between the Northern states where slavery was prohibited, and the state in the south of the country who were slaveholders (source from: reading “Pr_ vs _Con-Slavery_in_the_Federal_Territories” ). Cause of the Civil War was slavery in the southern parts of the state. The slaves lived under very difficult conditions and sever did not approve. States' Rights Refers to the struggle between the federal government and individual states over political power. Some states in the South were slaves and slave owners were very badly treated the slaves.
