Now, imagine being covered in dirt everyday, risking your life by climbing up tight space in poor working conditions, to clean out he soot from a chimney! In the 1800s , during the Industrial Revolution in Britain, child labor was common to everyday life. In Britain child labor laws were a necessity, but when were they finally put into place? What resulted from the implementation of those laws? Child labor was wildly common in Britain during the Industrial Revolution. Kids as young as the age of five were forced to work. People wanted to abolish child labor, but some for different reasons. Some people were concerned with the well being of the young children’s physical and mental health and believed that they were being treated unjustly. Others saw an increase in unemployment for adults because factories and companies were hiring children because they were willing to be paid less and work longer hours. Finally, the British Government made small actions to protect the young children from the Un humane conditions,by passing a series of acts. In 1833, the government passed a Factory Act regulating the age of children workers. No child under the age of nine was allowed to work. This Act also monitored the number of hours they would work. The law even had inspectors in the factories to supervise the workers and to the bosses to make sure they were following

While some might argue that industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of new machines, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were child labor, disgusting living conditions, and hard, dangerous, filthy jobs for little pay. One of the negative effects of Industrialization was child labor. Many children worked during the Industrial Revolution because they needed to support their families. Lots of them started working very young.
Children worked in mines, factories, and fields. They would work long hours and receive very little pay. Some kids as young as five years old worked in factories. They worked in poor, dangerous conditions with harmful fumes, gasses, and equipment. Wilson saw what was happening throughout the country and decided to pass the Keating-Owen Act in 1916.
In 1904 Harsh national campaign for federal child labor law reform began, they had set a national minimum wage for the first time, a maximum number of hours for workers and placed limitations on child labor, children under sixteen years of age were prohibited in manufacturing and mining.
(America, pg. 847) Children were working underage as well, legislation was pushing or justice. It was then that children were banned from working under the age of 14 working outside the home. It was the democrats that pushed to pass the child-labor law.
According to the 1900 Census, 1.75 million children aged 10-15 held jobs, and they comprised more than 6 percent of the labor force (“Labor”). With the ratification of the Keating-Owen Child Labor Act in 1916, 14- and 15-year-olds were heavily restricted in terms of hours and present dangers and all products manufactured by children less than 14 were banned from being sold (“Labor”). These guidelines are customary today in the United States (“Labor”). The final significant issue organized labor tackled was a minimum wage, which they got with the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938; it set forth a federal wage floor of $0.25 per hour and established the time-and-a-half provision for overtime pay (“1.1”).
Child labor was another problem presented at this time. At the rate they were going back in 1900, 26% of boys between ten and fifteen were already working, and for girls it was 10% (Background Essay). Child labor was increasing as fast as the children working were dying. An example of this tragic scenario was Dennis McKee, a 15-year-old boy who was smothered to death by coal (Document B). This boy had a family, and that family had to deal with the loss of their son, all to the fault of an industry that thought to use young, able-bodied boys for their work was a fantastic idea.
Did you know that during the Industrial Revolution children were forced to work in factories, and were being paid very little money? I do not think that it is right to make a child work and not get to have an education. In the article “Child Labor” it talks about child labor and how it has changed over the years. In the article it says that during the Industrial Revolution children were hired for jobs on farms and factories because they could fit into small spaces easier and were easier to handle than adults.
They later made rules to better the working environment for men and women. Children also started working at a very young age. For instance,” C: What time did you begin work at the factory? B: When I was six years old.”
They limited the hours of work for children, of certain ages, children from 9 – 13 were only allowed to work 8 hours a day, those who were 14 – 18 could only work 12 hours a day, and the children under 9 were not allowed to work at all. The government made sure of that the act was carried out. After a while in the 20 century the government went further to protect the children’s rights, the labour unions did not want children to work in the factories anymore due to danger being involved. In 1850 the government made the hours increase the women and children worked to 10 and a half hours a day, but not allowed to work before 6am or after 6pm. Plus in 1874 the government made the another labour rule for all women, children, and men that no worker was allowed to work more than 56.5 hours per week.
These reforms included stricter safety standards, shorter work hours, and the elimination of dangerous working conditions. As a result of these efforts, New York and other states began to pass laws that regulated child labor and improved working conditions for all workers. In New York, for example, the state passed the Labor Law of 1913, which prohibited children under the age of 14 from working in factories and required employers to provide safety equipment and training.
Business owners had children working unsafe jobs, and that was a problem. In the 1900’s child labor laws went to effect, Laws came from all corners of the world to make sure children are at the appropriate age to work. By 1899, 28 states had passed laws due to child labor. Then, in 1938, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act. This changed the age of work for a minor dramastically.
While children from the ages of 5 and 6 weren’t included in the census, they still worked the same shifts as the older kids, which were 18-20 hours a day, 6 days a week. During the Progressive Era, these conditions improved dramatically for the children working, and for all the other workers as well. In 1904, a group of reformists created the National Child Labor Committee, and started lobbying to end the abuse that was child labor. Eight years later, a Children’s Bureau was established to examine all matters pertaining to the welfare of children (“Working Conditions in Factories (Issue),” 2000). Child labor was a great concern in the Industrial revolution but very few people did something to stop it. Women and Children were forced to work more than 10 hours a day with only forty minutes to have lunch. Elizabeth Bentley once said that they didn’t have any time to have breakfast or drink anything during the day. They worked standing up and if they didn’t do their work on time they were strapped (whipped). Children were treating like they were not important, like they didn’t deserve a better life.
