Everybody has a soft side, they just don’t always chose to show it. Some people keep theirs a secret, as a defense mechanism because they are afraid of getting hurt. In S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders, one of the main characters, Dally, doesn’t reveal his until the very end. He has been hurt before, and is scared that if he lets it show, the same thing will happen again. However, very soon after he reveals his soft side, he is hurt worse than ever before. In the beginning of the book, we only think Dally is a big tough guy who doesn’t care about anybody else. Dally has had a very tough life. His parents “walked out on him” in a way, and his only family is the rest of the gang. Since he had no one to tell him what to do, he was usually in some …show more content…
Besides from everything he did, he wasn’t exactly the friendliest face. For example, Pony says that “He had quite a reputation. They have a file on him down at the police station. He had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids-he did everything. I didn’t like him, but he was smart and you had to respect him.” (11) All of these qualities are not very good ones to have. If you go out and get drunk every night, and lie and cheat, my guess is that you aren’t the most caring person in the world. This description of Dally makes him out to be a low life bum, who gets drunk and arrested frequently, which in the beginning of the book he was. The caring side of Johnny has not been revealed yet, so that’s why the only descriptions of Dally we get right now, make him look like a …show more content…
Dally sees two girls, Cherry and Marcia, and decides to “use his moves” on him. Once you read this you will see that they didn’t exactly work so well. According to the text, “‘Take your feet off my chair and shut your trap.’ Dally Merely looked at her and kept his feet where they were. ‘Who’s gonna make me?’” This scene in the book really shows how “tough” Dally is in the beginning of the book. The author wants us to think that Dally is a tough guy, and that he doesn’t care about other people. That’s why in this scene dally is obnoxious, and rude, and is refusing to be nice. In this situation, an “untough’ guy would listen to what Cherry said, respect her wishes, and try to be respectful for the rest of the time. But clearly, that is not what Dally did. Even when Cherry poured her soda on Dally, Dally kept on going. All of these things are actions that your typical “tough guy” would do, and that’s why we think this way of him right
The character Dally is troubled, tough, and caring. This character can be described as troubled for many reasons. One example of how he is troubled is when Dally says, “You’d better wise up Ponyboy you get tough like me and you don’t get hurt” (Hinton 147).
First of all Dally is especially reckless. Dally is reckless because when he was in New York he would get into gang fights just to blow off steam. Dally getting into gang fight just to blow off steam is just a reckless thing to do because why would you do that when you could seriously get hurt or killed. Another reckless thing Dally did was he cheated on serious games like poker and he would steal from stores. This also shows how Dally id reckless because by doing this it could get him into jail again
He didn’t care, after finding out that johnny has died he goes crazy and robs a store. As he is running out he gets shot in his lower abdomen but still runs off. He calls Pony, Steve, Two-bit, Darry, and Soda, when they get to the vacant lot where he was surrounded by policemen, he pulled out an unloaded gun, he wanted to die that 's why he did it, he was gunned down by the police. Dally got what he wanted and dying was what he wanted after Johnny died, he died a hoodlum… ‘“Dally didn 't die a hero, he died violent, violent, and desperate. Like we knew he
To begin, Dallys decisions and actions reveal who he is as a person. In the novel Dally says he carries a heater. The gun isn't loaded but he wants people to think it is. This is showing that Dally is pretending to be somebody he's not. He wants people to think he is intimidating and wants people to be scared of him if he pulls out the heater.
(34). Cheryy is trying to comfort Ponyboy by saying all Socs aren’t like that, but Ponyboy doesn’t believe her since he hasn't seen any nice Socs, but then Cherry uses Dally as an example, saying that she can just stereotype all the Greasers by saying that they’re all like Dally. Their relationship was built off of that one night just because they didn’t assume the worst from each other and went deeper than the
He never once thought twice about going in to save the kids and Johnny. He also didn’t hesitate to help Johnny and Ponyboy run away. So, even though the socs had more money, power and social dominance, it didn’t stop Dally from fighting from what he believed
This shows again that he didn’t care about the children, and that he is selfish. But this also shows that he still cared about Johnny and his safety, and that he still had a bit of kindness, and very little innocence. Overall, throughout the entire book, Dally showed that he wasn’t innocent, and that he didn’t have a good heart. But at the end the writer, S.E. Hinton, showed us that Dally still had a bit of innocence due to the fact that he got influenced by Johnny, who is kind hearted and a bit
Dally is not strong mentally (when he couldn’t let Johnny go), he really does not do good deeds, and he does not care about any other people than only Johnny, and he’s rude to others and bad at using words. A quotation that supports my statement is, “What for? Get back in here before I beat your head in.” (p.90) This quotation supports my statement because Dally said this to Ponyboy when he hopped off the car and said to see what the deal is when he saw the old church on fire, it proves that Dally does not care about other stuff that does not involve him and that he’s rude to others and using
Dally had jumped a few people. [...] But not all of us are that bad” (34). While Cherry is a Soc, she knows that you can’t judge people by who they hang out with. In fact, Cherry took time to talk to Ponyboy rather than judging him by the way Dally acted.
Dally helped the gang throughout the book and in doing so he was
Ponyboy describes Dally as, “So Dally, even though he could get into a good fight sometimes, had no specific thing to hate. No rival gang. Only Socs. And you can't win against them no matter how hard you try, because they've got all the breaks and even whipping them isn't going to change that fact. Maybe that was why Dallas was so
Dally A rock-hard hood who never backs down from any challenge. Dally is a character in the book “Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton. The Outsiders is a book where a ragtag group of greasers band together and overcome victories, tragedies, and above all, build an even stronger bond of brotherhood. This story begins in the town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Ponyboy(our main character) is walking home from the movies and gets ambushed by a large group of Socs(Sociables-the “popular/rich” clique).
He was always looking for trouble and was not interested in anybody's feelings like in this instance “ [Dally] put his feet up on the redheads chair, winked at [Ponyboy] and beat his own record for saying something dirty. ”(p 87). Nobody would want to be treated like this, and anyone with good sense would know that. A hero is somebody who is pleasant and congenial but Dally does not have either of this characteristics. Right before the death of Johnny out of fear to losing Johnny Dallas went on a rant saying “‘That’s what you get for helpin’ people,’”
Dally has the biggest reputation for being the best, toughest and the meanest in the outsiders. He also served time in juvenile prison and even came from a broken home environment … in the book and the movie. Ponyboy fears dally and most of all ponyboy dislikes dally for his horrible and rude personality. When they hide out in the abandoned
(1.48) After Johnny died, Dally makes an enormous sacrifice that took away his life. He loved Johnny so much that he couldn't take the fact he was gone. Dally was known to be the most cold-blooded member of the gang but after Johnny's death, he was the one who showed the most affection. Dally wouldn’t have been shot if he didn’t love Johnny so much, and sacrificed himself.
