Case Study: The Latino Health Care System

The history of Latinos in Utah is complex, but it is also a history that is neither well represented in mainstream recounting nor well recognized in the mainstream understanding of Utah’s past. Convoluted interactions among Native Americans, Spaniards, French, Mexicans, Anglos, and others shaped the story of Utah. Awareness of the long presence of Hispanics in Utah is essential to understanding the history of the state. This volume is an attempt to piece together that history through photos and oral histories.

The ever-growing Latino population in California has been using an alternative way to address their health problems. They are going back to their roots and using folk medicine or curanderismo. Curanderos are citizens of the Latino population who heal individuals through different herbs, massages, bone setting, counseling, spirituality, and midwifery (Hoskins and Padrón, 2017). This practice is important because many Latinos within California rely on non-traditional western practices to receive care for their illnesses because they don’t have access to other forms of health care or they want to follow their religious backgrounds. In this case study the use of herbal remedy is apparent. The herbal remedy used in this case scenario may have been recommended by a Curandero. A Curandero who is a folk healer in the Hispanic culture is knowledgeable about the use of herbs and plants to heal illness. The help of a Curandero is usually sought out by individuals or family members experiencing illness. The herb that is suggested by the Curandero is then used to treat the illness.

Mexican Leadership Within the past decade there has been an increase in Latino representation that has jumped started the advocacy of Latino related issues all across the nation. Prior to this influx of representation, Latino politics was extremely limited to only local government. In today’s society, Latino politics is a main issue on both the Republican and Democratic platform. Even though this has been a tremendous milestone to reach, Latinos continue to be underrepresented in all forms of government.

United states of america have been seen in the history trayectory as the prosperous land. People from all the world had immigrate to this country. They had fight for this land. Latinos had contributed to the formation of the U.S. they have the right to reside in it. They arent anymore from other country.

Latino, a Latino is a person of Latin-America or a person who lives in the United States. Latinos are a hispanic family or as we like to call them a close-knit group and the most important social unit. The term “familia” usually goes beyond the nuclear family. Latinos are very family oriented.

Health Care in the US is arguably available to all who seek it but not everybody has had the same experience and treatment when walking through the doors of a healthcare facility. In many cases, people are discriminated against due to their gender, race/ethnicity, age, and income and are often provided with minimal service. Differences between groups in health coverage, access to care, and quality of care is majorly affected through these disparities. Income is a major factor and can cause groups of people to experience higher burden of illness, injury, disability, or mortality relative to another group.

In order to receive medical opinion, individuals from Mexican origin must first agree to visiting a physician; and this is often just as problematic. B. The question of if diet effects their health was answered in the other question, both people I interviewed stressed that most of their concerns with their family and culture have to do with diet and exercise, which ties in the risk factors in Hispanics. 2004). These conditions place a great burden on our health care system, and on our health professionals (Nadeau & Measham 2006). Nadeau and Measham’s (2006) article highlights some of the challenges paediatricians face when providing appropriate health care to migrant children. One of the challenges they discuss is that most migrant families find it difficult to navigate our foreign healthcare system and are often reluctant to do so due to a deep seeded mistrust of services, hence “paediatricians and psychiatrists need to use particular strategies to invite families to invest in needed treatments” (Nadeau & Measham 2006, p. 146). They also discuss the challenges of creating a welcoming environment which instils a sense of trust within the client (Nadeau & Measham 2006).

According to the CDC Hispanics of Mexican origin make up approximately 17 percent of the population in the United States. They are the one of the largest cultural populations in U.S. has risen dramatically over last four decades. There are a variety of reason that lead to health disparities for the Hispanic community these reasons then lead to the individuals not obtaining healthcare. First, it was reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2012 that 29.1 percent of the Hispanic do not have health insurance. This usually prevents the majority of Hispanic people from receiving health care.

In the workplace, Cubans recognize and assimilate a hierarchical relationship, respect to supervisors, or other authority figure is characteristic (Purnell, 2013). The multigenerational and hierarchical characteristics of the Cuban family are also demonstrated at the time of seeking health advice. They look first for home remedies or traditional herbs and teas sell in stores called botanicas, prayers, and rituals before consult a health care provider.

Different cultures and religions believe in different types of healing practices, there are a lot of Americans that use herbal remedies to cure all sorts of illnesses. If these remedies don’t work, it is the responsibility of the individual and family members to seek out proper medical treatment for the
