Summary: The Ever-Growing Latino Population

The history of Latinos in Utah is complex, but it is also a history that is neither well represented in mainstream recounting nor well recognized in the mainstream understanding of Utah’s past. Convoluted interactions among Native Americans, Spaniards, French, Mexicans, Anglos, and others shaped the story of Utah. Awareness of the long presence of Hispanics in Utah is essential to understanding the history of the state. This volume is an attempt to piece together that history through photos and oral histories.

Behnken December 7, 2015 The Latino Threat The Latino Threat is a book written by Leo R Chavez and anthropologist who is a professor at University of California, Irvine in which he analyzed the threats that Latinos face in America by its society. In his book Chavez discussed that Americans assumed Latinos were a threat because of the stereotypes and prejudices that the media and many other sources had over them.

Discrimination against Mexican- Americans could be seen throughout the United States during this time but particularly in the southwest part of the country.

The validity of the perception that “the United States is a country made of immigrants” has been historically challenged by the government and those in power. In his book, Latino Americans: The 500-Year Legacy that Shaped a Nation, Ray Suarez provides a deep understanding of how the contributions and struggles by the Latinos in the past has shaped the present of this nation. To many “Americans,” Latinos are just new immigrants coming from their land in search of a better future. For those Latinos, however, leaving their countries, cultures, families and communities comprise the most significant sacrifice of their lives. As many other Latinos, my family migrated to the United States with the hope of a better future.

Overall, the groups of people the United States gave the label “Latino” all had different reasons and ways to become citizens. The Cubans were accommodated gladly because they were viewed as fleeing communism and, arguably, had the easiest time becoming citizens of the groups that immigrated. Mexicans fell victim to having their border fall south of them after the Mexican-American war and became citizens with the treaty of Guadalupe. Puerto Ricans became citizens without full rights under the constitution with the Jones Act of 1917 after the Spanish American war. There are many attributes that apply to this particular population and one of the most current ones is the numbers of college graduates increasing with the years. The goal of this research project is to study Latinos and higher education. The purpose of this research is to study first-generation Latino college student and the specific financial challenges and the benefits that come with being a member of such ethnic group. My goal is to learn what specific challenges these students have to overcome as a first generation as well as the benefits given to these particular students for being a first generation.

For instance, the American Indian/Alaska Native population is a prominent minority community that faces health disparities. In the United States, there is currently 567 federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native tribes and 2.9 million individuals identify themselves as American Indian/Alaska Native natives alone (Dugi, 2017). According to the CDC Hispanics of Mexican origin make up approximately 17 percent of the population in the United States. They are the one of the largest cultural populations in U.S. has risen dramatically over last four decades. There are a variety of reason that lead to health disparities for the Hispanic community these reasons then lead to the individuals not obtaining healthcare. First, it was reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2012 that 29.1 percent of the Hispanic do not have health insurance. This usually prevents the majority of Hispanic people from receiving health care.
