The Love of the Profession and the Stress That Comes With it Stress was first defined/coined in 1936 by Hans Selye (1955) as “a non-specific deviation from the normal resting state” or “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change.” The mention of “stress” tends to always have a negative connotation, but not necessarily, stress can be beneficial at times. For example, the writing of an essay the night before its due seems to produce the best work for some yet not for most. Unfortunately, for this paper the focus is on the negative implications of stress (Selye, 1955). Nursing is the most rewarding profession a person can embark upon. The purpose of this paper is to discuss stress as defined by theorist Selye, the meaning of nursing burnout, its detrimental effects, and the implementation of spirituality as a stress mediator. The perioperative department can be an extremely stressful environment. Patients and their family members may experience high levels of anxiety, uncertainty, and fear. A prudent preoperative nurse should focus on to alleviate any of their concerns, provide comfort, present education regarding their upcoming procedure, and answer questions.
What was once thought of as a profession driven by compassion and the desire to help those in need has now become filled with weary burnt out nurses who have lost sight of their purpose. Stress has caused them to distance themselves from the principles nursing is built upon. Our health care system needs to be revamped to improve the quality of care being administered. Nurses can be proactive and take steps to avoid burning out but, our health care administrators have to take matters into their hands because they have the capacity to initiate change. Nursing is an important component of society, it is one of the most trusted professions and there is an endless need for the care they provide throughout the world. Despite being one of the backbones to healthcare, the nursing profession has a growing number of nurses leaving the field for a variety of reasons. Nurses endure high stress, burnout, and many different setbacks that contribute to this growing issue. An appropriate question to ask is: In new graduate nurses, does a lack of exposure to resilience increase the turnover rate and burnout in the field? Being a nurse is one of the hardest jobs, including one of the lowest paying for the workload nurses take on. Nurses go through years of schooling, and many nurses often end up disliking their chosen profession. There seems to always be a shortage of nurses so many nurses are more than often overworked and underpaid. Having another individual’s health hang in your balance can cause mental and physical exhaustion which can eventually lead to nurse burnout. Many nurses that work in high-stress environments and not having the proper training or enough assistance can lead to serious mistakes in patient care.
Burnout is a state of mental, physical, or emotional exhaustion when too much stress and work is laid on a student. When these conditions are seen in a student, they are in no position to learn as the overwhelming stress will cause them to be unfocused and may lead to mental illnesses.

Stress is defined as an imbalance state in energetical supply which makes someone feeling difficulty to restore or compensate (Sanders 1983). Stress is an inherent part of life, particularly in the lives of college students. Generally recognized for its detrimental effects on us, this backward thinking can be attributed to the initial studies on stress. Over time, research on stress has proven fruitful, as we now know that stress may plausibly have positive effects and beneficial applications to academics. In fact, more recent studies have shown that stress follows a curvilinear relationship with performance (Westman & Eden, 2007). As such, we are now aware that optimal levels of stress can enhance learning abilities but continual stress hinders normal bodily functions by weakening the immune system (Aldwin & Greenberger, 1987).
Hans Selye said: “Without stress, there would be no life” (Olpin, Michael and Helson Margie 2010, 2007). Most people view stress as a threat to people’s comfort. However, stress is not always negative. There is also good stress, called Eustress because it motivates people to achieve more and to reach for perfection. If there is no or very little stress, we do not have the motivation to strive so that our working efficiency is at a very low level.
