The Most Dangerous Game In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, Rainsford, the protagonist, states that there are two classes: the hunters and the huntees: “The world is made up of two classes--the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters” (216). This is true because of several reasons, such as the fact that Rainsford fell off a ship and had to swim across the jungle to find food in order to survive. That’s when Rainsford discovered a mansion and realizes that there may be ‘life’ in this jungle. When he knocks on the door and Zaroff answers he finds himself saying, “what do I do now?” Clearly, Rainsford struggled to survive in the story.
"My dear fellow," said the general, "have I not told you I always mean what I say about hunting?” (229). There were several hunters in the story and they each had different perspectives about hunting. The main character, Rainsford, believed in hunting for survival and food. Whitney believed that animals have feelings, and fear, not really caring for hunting. Zaroff likes to hunt on his free time, and to keep alive in the jungle. Zaroff didn’t just hunt animals, he hunted anything that moved. Then, you got Zaroff’s dogs that hunt for things too, because Zaroff has to train them.
