Jieun Choi Professor Milne American History and Culture 12 May 2015 The Boston Tea Party Let us say that your favorite food is produced overseas. Instead of importing the food directly from the country, with much higher taxes you have to buy the food via another country that has a monopoly on the food. Worse yet, the tax is imposed even without your consent. How would you respond to this? This is similar with what colonials were facing in the 17th century. They were not allowed to import Black Tea from India or China but only from Great Britain since the British government gave the East India Company a monopoly on the importation of tea. The increased tax, however, was the tip of the story. The causes of the Boston Tea Party were more …show more content…
What infuriated the colonists was not the increased tax but the fact that their representatives were not present in the process of revising taxes. Britons and British Americans agreed that, according to the constitution, British subjects could not be taxed without the consent of their elected representatives. In Great Britain, this meant that taxes could only be levied by Parliament. Colonists, however, did not elect members of Parliament, and so American Whigs argued that the colonies could not be taxed by that body. Although Parliament lifted some of taxes on colonists, it still taxed on tea without consent of their elected representatives. As a result, it triggered the Boston Tea Party. The slogan, “No taxation without representation,” summarized a primary grievance of the American colonists which was one of the major causes of the American …show more content…
The furious royal government responded to the "Boston Tea Party" by the Intolerable Acts of 1774, practically eliminating self-government in Massachusetts and closing Boston's port. The news of the destruction of the tea raised the spirit of resistance in the colonies. With this act, the colonists started the violent part of the revolution. It was the first attempt for the colonists to resist violently against the Great Briton. It was when all the colonists realized for the first time that they were treated wrong by the British government. The Boston Tea Party was an important step towards the independence movement, which was resting in the head of each colonist. They all flew from their mother country to start a new life in a new world, but the British government didn't give them the possibility by controlling them. The following events including the American Revolution were created by the snowball
They shouted, “No taxation without Representation!” The Boston Massacre and The Boston Tea Party angered the colonists and the king. This caused trouble between the Patriots and the British which led to the American Revolution. To start with, The Boston Massacre was just
As a result, the British came with the idea of the movement of tea from Britain to Boston. Making the colonies pay extra taxes for something that was used very often.
The Boston Tea Party was one of the ways in which the colonists started revolting against the British. It took place on the Boston harbour and is therefore called the Boston Tea Party. Fill the blanks. Dartmouth 16th December, 1773 Samuel Adams Intolerable Acts Tea Act Dumped Taxation without representation
A new tea tax was introduced to the American colonies in New England. This action did not prove very popular and led
A series of events between 1765 and 1775 which eventually led to the American Revolution. Townshend duties (1770) were one of those events which resulted in the boycott of British goods by colonies. Likewise, custom racketeering event (1768) was performed for the intentional detention of colonial ships and their goods, which led to widespread violence in Boston. To curb this violence, the British occupied Boston, which indirectly resulted in Boston Massacre of 1770. Another major event that pushed two sides to the war was the Boston Tea Party (1773).
“Taxation Without Representation” American colonists thought that Britain was taxing them unfairly for the expenses caused during the French and Indian war or that Parliament had the right to tax them since there weren’t any American colonies represented in Parliament. Since the American colonists drank a lot of tea, Britain decided to impose taxes on the American colonies. Because the taxes increased, the American colonists started to smuggle tea from the Dutch and other European countries. The Boston Tea Party was the first significant act of defiance by American colonists and was one of the things that lead to the start of the American Revolution, which began in Massachusetts on April 19, 1775.
King George was upset about what took place at the Boston tea party. King George and his minister passed the coercive acts, aimed specifically at punishing Boston for the intransigence of its citizens and at making an example of the city. The acts was known as the "Intolerable Acts" among American Whigs were uncompromising. The port of Boston was closed until the city compensated the British East India for its losses; the Massachusetts Government Act revoked the colony's charter and placed it under martial law; and the Administration of Justice Act allowed British official charged with breaking the law to be tried in British courts rather than in the colonies. The Boston Tea Party was the last straw for the British, and the Intolerable Acts
Some effects of the Boston Tea Party are… No more taxes on tea. The colonists finial you got what they wanted and deserved, and that was no more taxes on tea. They started the tea party in the first place because they wanted to get back at the British for taxing them. They wanted their money back.
However, in 1773, the East India Company noticed that there was an overproduction of tea and its prices surely would decline (“The Third Imperial Crisis”). Tea was one of the, if not the, most valuable asset to many members in Parliament. Britain was forced to impose a new Tea tax on the colonists, which was aimed to keep the price of tea high. Even this act was reasonable in the eyes of the British, but to the colonists, this was just a British way of assuring dominance considering it was now for profit rather than to pay off debts. The response to the Tea Acts was the Boston Tea Party of 1773 (“The Third Imperial Crisis”).
This primary source account was a letter written by John Andrews to a relative. He was simply trying to get the word out about the Boston Tea Party by sharing his experiences with his family. The Boston Tea Party was a protest because of the tax on the tea. British Parliament had just annulled most of the import taxes enforced on the colonies, but decided to leave the tax on imported tea to prove its authority. In November of 1773, three ships arrived in the Boston harbor with 342 chests of tea.
The colonists wanted representation when it came down to being taxed, but the British government would not allow it. The government wanted full control over the people, so they made sets of acts and laws that were placed on taxation. For example, the Stamp Acts of 1765. These acts taxed all papers, pamphlets, newspapers, and cards. The Townshend Acts of 1767 were also a large part of taxation.
The riot began when about 50 citizens attacked a British sentinel. A British officer called in additional soldiers, and they too were attacked, so the soldiers fired into the mob, killing 5. The Boston Tea Party began with the Tea Act that past in Boston. The law prevented the colonists from buying tea from other tea shops and that tea was more expensive than the others.
The French and Indian War was important to the American Revolution because the debt from the war was the reason that Parliament started taxing the colonists. Also, the French and Indian War made Britain very weak, making the colonists’ actions work a whole lot better. Since France was not happy with the outcome of their war with Britain this was a main reasons for France’s interest in helping the now Americans throughout the Revolutionary War, which was very important to the colonies’ victory. The reason why Britain started to tax the colonists was because of the debt resulting from the French and Indian War. The first tax was the the tax on sugar, which was put on the colonists to help pay off the war debt.
The Revolutionary War was probably one of the most detrimental effects of The Boston Tea Party. The Colonists were talking of uniting and taking action against Great Britain, so they formed the First Continental Congress. The Congress encouraged the people to resist King George and the British Parliament’s attempt at taxing them and the Colonies were beginning to rebel. This proved that the Americans were ready to fight against Great Britain. The Revolutionary War broke out not long after and the Colonists exited the war victorious.
The boston tea party occurred when colonist as a way of rebelion attack british by throwing the tea that they found in their ships. And some people wonder why they did that and historic events show that there were French Indian War before that make the colonists to have an economic crisis so they can pay for the products. And the unique product that haven’t tax was the tea.
