Black Lives Matter is a social movement that has attracted many civilans in the United states. The purpose of the movement is to inform people about police brutality against black people. The movement wants people to be aware of the injustice being done to black people by law inforcement and goverment officals. The black lives matter movement started in 2012, after the death of Trayvon Martin. From there it only grew bigger and better making it a nationwide movement. People all over the United States of all race, color, and gender support the movement. Although since racism still continues in America, many do not support the movement, and think of it as a chance for blacks to “pull the race card”.

It is important to detach the symbols of “black” and “white,” from a prejudiced interpretation of what that may mean. What makes a social movement successful is the social change that it brings about. The civil rights movement has seen great change with all the legislation that has been implemented, but it appears that the movement has resurfaced and taken on a new shape. Statement of Purpose In light of recent events and social media uproar, the goal of this argumentative paper is to provide a brief but comprehensive understanding to the concept of the black lives matter movement and slogan. The movement is an affirmation of Black people’s contributions to society, humanity, and their resilience in the face of oppression. (“About,” n.d.) As a result, this paper will critically examine the foundation of the movement and the validity of both sides of the argument and the media’s involvement and several other topics.

To help understand this concept, by using three different sociological theories: Functionalism, Conflict, and Symbolic Interaction. Functionalism Functionalism is defined as “A theory that views society as a orderly and stable system with interconnected parts designed to meet the needs of individuals in a society” (Sociology Dictionary). Meaning that coming from a functionalism theorist point of view, Black Lives Matter is a movement that fits the need of African Americans. It’s their voice to as whole, to say this something that needs to happen.

In recent years, high-profile cases of police brutality against African Americans have brought this issue to the forefront of national attention. The Black Lives Matter movement, which began in 2013, has been instrumental in raising awareness of this issue and advocating for change. In addition to police brutality, African Americans continue to face significant economic and educational inequalities. According to the Economic Policy Institute, African American workers earn less than their white counterparts, even when they have the same level of education and experience.

The fight for black rights and equality has been a goal for centuries and it continues to this day not only that but it continues to grow worse. “Many tend to think of that era's push for civil rights and Black power as a distinctly American phenomenon. It was, in fact, a global movement--and so is BLM today” (Keisha N. Blain).

In our society there are numerous challenges and obstacles that African Americans have to overcome. The Black Lives Matter Movement is an positive empowering movement that helps African Americans in a powerful place. The movement was created as a result of the massive amount of black murders that occurred due to police or racial profiling or driving while black. Black people are killed everyday due to not so smart decisions, there are different solutions to problems but all problems do not get resolved the right way. The Black Lives matter movement is a platform for the African American people to be heard on certain events that has occurred over the years.

The Black Lives Matter Movement has been going on for decades. There are certain instances where it becomes more well-known than other times. One of those was during the Martin Luther King Jr. speech in 1963 and then again in 2020 due to the tragic death of George Floyd. To continue, there have been several deaths of black individuals that have boosted the urge to keep protesting. This connects back to both police brutality and how so much PTSD forms, “As a result, the phrase "Black lives matter" has been invoked alongside the recognition of the deaths of numerous Black individuals who have died from undue police violence” (Green 199).

A cause of corruption, discrimination and inequality, the cause of death of many innocent lives. Throughout the long history, racism has been a subject of much debate, most notably in The United states of America. There have been numerous actions that suggest that racial inequality might still be intact with America’s modern society, such as the extreme violence shown by the police that has been roaming all over social media recently. This has eventually led to the creation of the controversial “Black lives matter” group. “Black lives matter” is an organization is an international activist campaign that disapproves of violence towards the African -American community.

The title of the article I chose to address is titled “The rise of Black Lives Matter: Trying to break the cycle of violence and silence”. This article extend beyond the idea of Black Lives Matter and wants the reader to be informed on what it is like to be black in america. The author includes a wide amount of information to help the reader understand why this cry for help was even created and why they want to stand up and make a change in our society. The purpose of this piece is to inform the general audience as to what Black Lives Matter really is and explain how they hope to rise as a movement. All though there may be issues within the group and outside forces that are wanting to go against them they will still not be silenced.
