Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi most commonly known as “Donatello” was a prominent sculptor from the early renaissance, his father was Niccolo di Betto Bardi, who was a member of the Florentine Wool Combers Guild. He got the nickname “Donatello” from his friends and family. Being the son of a well known craftsman put him on the road to greatness from an early age. His education consisted of studying under the the Martellis, which were a wealthy and well known family of bankers and patrons from Florence that were also closely acquainted with the Medici family. This is also where a young Donatello most likely first started his artistic training from a local goldsmith. In the year 1403, he apprenticed metalsmith and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti who was also a native florentine. Donatello is a world renowned sculptor and artist that was born in Florence Italy in 1386 to a member of the Florentine Wool Combers Guild named Niccolo di Betto Bardi. To begin, Michelangelo and Donatello’s David, show the features of the early and high Italian Renaissance. Furthermore, they represent the portrayal of the same Greek hero, but with different postures. The body details show the same pride, arrogance, and fortitude. In this essay I will be discussing about the art works of Donatello’s David (1437) and Michelangelo’s David (1504) as how they have contributed to the advancement of Western Art in history. I will be explaining my content by laying emphasis on the style of art, innovation, its importance and particular differences between the both art works. Starting with the style of art of both the art works, Donatello’s David art work of early Renaissance period was under the category of classical style of ancient Rome and Greece art work. Classical style of ancient Rome and Greece art depicts the society that creates them and lays emphasis on the accomplishments of human beings. Donatello featured a young male nude with the slight bent towards hip which gives a real stance to the art in his bronze sculpture thus reintroducing several classical compositions.
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in March 6 1475, by Arezzo, Tuscany. His family had been small bankers, but his father lost that. Instead, he worked government jobs. He got accepted into Lorenzo de'Medici's school for art, and did one painting for Lorenzo. Lorenzo Medici's death brought about a turn around to Michelangelo's life, returning to his father's house and doing some sculpture.
This sculpture is a mixture of female and male traits; its idea is to describe the realism without mythical and big muscles as was found in the Hellenistic period. Donatello’s David shows realism more than it does an ideal condition of man as in the Greek Hellenistic period. There are a few ways to tell. First, David’s skinny body and his arrogant expression reveal a confident man and anon-mythical expression that would not have been made as artwork during the Hellenistic period.
