Veterinarians often work long hours including nights and weekends. Because they are on-call employees, they may have to respond to emergencies outside of scheduled work hours (Pen). The work veterinarians perform on a daily basis may be physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. To become a veterinarian, one needs to always have a compassionate mind and heart. Every day, a veterinarian has firsthand experiences when animals are sick and suffering. With every scared or agitated animal you receive, you are at risk of being injured by one (Veterinarians). Although it deeply pains a veterinarian, euthanizing an animal is also a task that must be done. When coming across sad or upset pet owners, one always needs to be prepared to pick the right words in a conversation. Unfortunately, this career field is also labeled as seasonal. This job is seasonal based on customer’s wages. When times are favorable, caretakers and owners are able to pay for treatments and medications. The funds to cover additional care become increasingly slim as the economy falls. Sadly, because owners often may not have money for the veterinarian, they choose to not take their animals in for a visit. Often, an owner will wait until an animal’s sickness has become worse before they choose to go to a veterinary …show more content…
The average veterinary student endures close to seven or eight years of college in order to obtain a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. During those years of college, a student must deal with the hardships of tuition, fees, tests, and clinical work. On an annual basis, the average veterinarian makes about $70,000.00. Having a career as a veterinarian will be worth every bump in the road as long as the true passion for the health and care for animals is present. Because animals cannot talk or inform us if they are in pain or sick, veterinarians serve as their voices. They help animals in a way that an average person could not. Veterinarians are put through so much on a daily basis, but they never seem to let anything or anyone hold them back. When picking veterinary medicine as a topic, I had hoped I chose the best topic. With little to no knowledge of this career, having a passion for animals was enough to learn every fact about how to help them. With the conclusion of my research paper, I believe that I would not have been as successful with any other topic. When entering college, I intend to achieve a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Having a strong mindset and a determination towards helping animals will help anyone through the long adventure of veterinary school. After learning every aspect of veterinary medicine, this was the job I was born to

College may be the best and most important time of my life. I get the opportunity to make new friends, try new things, and to begin learning about things that I’m truly interested in. I’m slightly unsure of the exact direction I want to take with my life, but as proved in Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, as long as I choose to follow my passion I will end up doing the right thing in life. Whilst Bryan Stevenson has the profound passion of justice and mercy, my passion is very different. My passion in life is to provide dogs with better eye care.
The Veterinarian’s Oath clearly points to the vital role research veterinarians play in animals’ welfare. One part of the Oath says, “I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society” (Walton,2013). This Oath gives evidence that the heart of a research veterinarian is in the right place. Walton explains that a research veterinarian has the right to make healthcare decisions for his/her patients that do not depend on opinions, level of compassion, or financial status of their owners. Another part of the Oath says that veterinarians are responsible for “the prevention and relief of animal suffering” (Walton, 2013).

I’ve been working cows with my dad since I was 4 years old. It is an occupation I am very educated in.

When asked what they want to be when they grow up, most children say astronaut, doctor, president, or veterinarian. I was one of those kids that replied “a veterinarian” when asked by others.
