Bearing In Elie Wiesel's Night

In the book Night, we the readers witness the hardships and struggles in Elie’s life during the traumatic holocaust. The events that take place in this story are unbearable and are thought to be demented in modern times. In the beginning Elie is shown as a normal teenage Jewish boy, but the events are so drastic that we the readers forget how he was like in the beginning. Changes were made to Elie during the book, whether they were minor or major. The changes generated from himself, the journey, and other people.

This reinforces the idea that the memory of the Holocaust has different meanings in different environments and contexts. It is important to acknowledge that this remembrance is important as the most important meaning belongs to the witnesses and what it means to them. The process of remembrance has been largely affected by the different national agendas that countries have. Thus, witness accounts help to educate different people with differing views.

Simon Wiesenthal said, “The schools would fail through their silence, the Church through its forgiveness, and the home through the denial and silence of the parents. The new generation has to hear what the older generation refuses to tell it.” The main purpose for Simon Wiesenthal to tell his story of the Holocaust was to educate others and to prevent similar horrific events from reoccurring. Wiesenthal tells his personal view on how he suffered and questioned his own morals. After years of living in the concentration camps in dire conditions Simon was faced with a difficult situation.

Elie Wiesel is a Holocaust survivor who strongly believes that people need to share their stories about the Holocaust with others. Elie Wiesel was in concentration camps for about half of his teen years along with his father. After being the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust he resolved to make what really happened more well-known. Elie Wiesel wrote dozens of books and submitted an essay titled “A God Who Remembers” to the book This I Believe. The essay focused on Elie Wiesel’s belief that those who have survived the Holocaust should not suppress their experiences but must share them so history will not repeat itself.

The speech, Mr. Wiesel showed to the audience that he knows of these events firsthand because he shared his own personal suffering and established ethos by telling the story in first person. He argued about the guilt of past violent events and proclaimed that said events could have been avoided if humanity had been less indifferent. He stated that had someone have intervened earlier, these events could have been avoided. Nonetheless, Mr. Wiesel still showed gratitude to those who intervened and fought those responsible for the hardship of himself and his people. However, he still did not understand why they did not do an intervention at an earlier time to avoid the suffering of thousands of people.

In the novel, “Night” Elie Wiesel communicates with the readers his thoughts and experiences during the Holocaust. Wiesel describes his fight for survival and journey questioning god’s justice, wanting an answer to why he would allow all these deaths to occur. His first time subjected into the concentration camp he felt fear, and was warned about the chimneys where the bodies were burned and turned into ashes. Despite being warned by an inmate about Auschwitz he stayed optimistic telling himself a human can’t possibly be that cruel to another human.

There were many who collaborated and murdered Jews, yet there were even more who kept silent and did nothing to stop this from happening. There were Nazis at the time who laughed at their victims, saying: If you try to tell people about this afterwards, no one will believe you! (Today, if you look on the internet, you will encounter hundreds of evil sites dedicated to anti-Semitism and denying that the Holocaust, a historical fact, took place.) So, the role of witnesses like Elie Wiesel is to fight the amoral indifference in this world, to remind us that he saw how the "cultured" Europeans degraded and murdered so many innocent individual human beings.

Elie Wiesel voiced his emotions and thoughts of the horrors done to Jewish people during World War II whilst developing his claim. Wiesel “remember[s] his bewilderment,” “his astonishment,” and “his anguish” when he saw they were dropped into the ghetto to become slaves and to be slaughtered. He repeats the words “I remember” because he and the world, especially those who suffered in the ghettos and camps, would never be able to forget how innocent suffered. Consequently, he emphasized that “no one” has the right to advocate for the dead. Like many other people in the world, he lost his family during the war.

The Holocaust was one of the most tragic events in history. It just so happened to be the cause of six million deaths. While there are countless beings who experienced such trauma, it is impossible to hear everyone's side of the story. However, one man, in particular, allowed himself to speak of the tragedies. Elie Wiesel addressed the transformation he underwent during the Holocaust in his memoir, Night.

In his 1986 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Elie Wiesel strives to inform his audience of the unbelievable atrocities of the Holocaust in order to prevent them from ever again responding to inhumanity and injustice with silence and neutrality. The structure or organization of Wiesel’s speech, his skillful use of the rhetorical appeals of pathos and ethos, combined with powerful rhetorical devices leads his audience to understand that they must never choose silence when they witness injustice. To do so supports the oppressors. Wiesel’s speech is tightly organized and moves the ideas forward effectively. Wiesel begins with humility, stating that he does not have the right to speak for the dead, introducing the framework of his words.

I wanted to return to Sighet to describe to you my death so that you might ready yourselves while there is still time... I wanted to come back to warn you. Only no one is listening to me... This was towards the end of 1942”(7). The pattern of faith and belief in Elie Wiesel’s Night is intertwined with the pattern of denial the Jews have throughout the book.

Chapter One Summary: In chapter one of Night by Elie Wiesel, the some of the characters of the story are introduced and the conflict begins. The main character is the author because this is an autobiographical novel. Eliezer was a Jew during Hitler’s reign in which Jews were persecuted. The book starts out with the author describing his faith.

Your existence is special, so you should be grateful for what you already have in life. If you put your mind to something, you will be able to overcome any obstacle. Keep fighting until you cannot fight any longer. Elie Wiesel has demonstrated these characteristics in his novel, “Night.” He has fought through many tough times and experiences when he was in the Holocaust.

The Holocaust one one of the most meaningful, sorrowful and poignant events in all of history. Even though it was a horrific experience for millions of people there are things that we can learn from it to make our world today a better place. We can reflect on the things that have been done to millions of people and we can hear the different stories of their experience, but nothing can be as impactful of actually being there, experiencing those things. One of the most imperative lessons that we have learned during this unit was to be an upstanders and don’t let things slide by you even though you know that they are not ok. Being an upstander is not just saying no to someone or saying that something is not ok.
