To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is an amazing book with an abundant of surprises. Set back in the 1930’s in Maycomb, Alabama, when the Great Depression was happening and racism from the civil war still rages on in this southern city. All the quotes and themes in the novel can still be associated to life today. As the book was narrating in the past by Jean Louise Finch (Scout), there is one man that guides her and her brother, Jem Finch. It is their father, Atticus Finch. He is a wise man to his community and its people, especially Jem and Scout. He loves everyone, even if they do not like him and helps others for the good of them. After Tom’s trial and Atticus revealing all of Bob Ewell’s mistakes, he comes up to Atticus’ face spits at it, and threatens him. Atticus says to his children, “He had to take it out on somebody and I’d rather it be me than that houseful of children out there. You understand?”(293). Atticus Finch is caring because he puts others before himself. When Bob Ewell spat and threatens Atticus, he did not reply with negativity. Atticus understands how he is feeling and still does not hate him for doing what he did. Atticus would take the heat if it meant protecting the children of Bob Ewell. He thinks about his problem at the moment before he talks and gives out life lessons in a way that a child could understand clearly. During Tom Robinson’s trial, when Atticus was present to defend Tom, he would ask Bob and Mayella Ewell about their life and their point of view as the witness and victim in the case. Atticus asks Bob Ewell, “Will you write your name and show us?”(236). Atticus is thoughtful because he expresses his ideas clearly and would later elaborate on it. During the questioning of Bob Ewell, he had a plan set up and started it with an odd question. However, the question played a role in his plan. Later on near the end of the court case, Atticus gives a speech. Atticus’ speech was trying to say that Bob Ewell is the one who assaulted Mayella, not Tom Robinson. Atticus Finch’s thoughtful nature relates to the theme. It shows that he knew who did assault on Mayella. He knew Bob Ewell would do these things and not Tom Robinson because of the overwhelming evidence provided. Mayella learns to treat other people than her race under her, due to her racist father’s beliefs. Atticus Finch is a thoughtful
The fear of her father and her nervousness clouded her judgement and, seemingly, she desired the jury’s pity. Mayella addressed Atticus, saying, “Won’t answer a word you say long as you keep on mockin’ me.” At Atticus’ puzzled expression, “Mayella looked from under lowered eyelids at Atticus, but she said to the judge: “Long’s he keeps on callin’ me ma’am and sayin’ Miss Mayella. I don’t hafta take his sass, I ain’t called upon to take it” (207). Bob Ewell’s oldest daughter knew exactly what had happened between herself and Tom Robinson, and essentially, she was completely aware that Atticus might be able to wheedle the truth from her.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella Ewell kisses Tom Robsinson, a black man, during a time where that was not accepted throughout society. Due to these assumptions, Mayella comes to the decision that she must frame the man, and is motivated to follow through with it. When brought to court, the case is seen by Atticus Finch, a lawyer whose motivation is argued with powerful rhetorical techniques. Atticus Finch brings justice to the court by using the logos and pathos
Atticus Finch, from Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, is the appointed lawyer of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping Mayella Ewell. During the trial, Atticus expertly and deftly exposes the Ewells as lacking in morality and as liars. Atticus Finch uses the audience, occasion, tone and subject to create a meaningful purpose in his speech. The purpose is to address the white community (essentially the Ewells) to show the blatant racism within Maycomb.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus the father of Jean Louise Finch, gave advice that helps Scout throughout the book. Scout applies it to her life but Atticus applies the advice to his life more than any other character. As Jem,Scout, and Dill were playing their new game Boo Radley, they get caught by Atticus.
Jem and Scott are patiently waiting for there dad to come home and to hear more about the case. ¨Ẅhen Atticus came home to dinner and said they´d sent the morning picking to the jury¨(Lee 214). This quote shows, how Atticus is starting to pull all his time into the Tom Robinson case. He did not care what anyone though but, still looked into the court case like he would for any case that he was on.
The judge reassures Mayella that Atticus has “done business in [the] court for years and years, and he is always courteous to everybody” (Lee 243). The judge implies that Atticus means no harm and is reliable because they have been working together for years. When Atticus thinks that Jem killed Ewell, he starts to panic. He starts to think of a good explanation and decides it was a “clear-cut self defense” (Lee 365). He thinks about how he is going to bring this to court.
During the trial of Tom Robinson, Atticus is the defending lawyer. He tries to turn the jury towards Bob Ewell the father of the rape victim. Atticus shows the jury that Mr. Ewell could have easily beat his daughter. The main idea that Atticus uses is that Tom Robinson didn’t hurt Mayella Ewell it was Bob Ewell. Although, at the end of the trial, Tom is found guilty and Bob Ewell grows a personal vendetta against Atticus.
The first reason for Atticus to defend Tom Robinson is Atticus believes in intergrity. When Atticus is grist introduced in the novel ' To Kill A Mockingbird' Atticus is described as someone with intergrity. " Atticus the twin lawyer, tries to do what's best for his clients even if they don't listen to him." Atticus tries to have the best interest of others at heart. Many people In the town of Maycomb don't agree with Atticus and him taking on the case.
Atticus explains to Scout why he took the court case in Tom’s favor, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (Lee 30). This explanation opens the reader’s eyes to see that, in a situation, instead of acting right away, Atticus thinks about the other person’s point of view and tries to see the world through their eyes for a moment. This again supports the theme of courage as it suggests that Atticus always tries to use his wisdom to prevent a situation instead of getting physical to solve his
The Novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee takes place in the period of the great depression. In the novel , Atticus Finch, a well respected lawyer is portrayed as a single parent who possesses many great traits. Some of the most important traits which he demonstrates a lot through the story are strength, boldness, and a great listener. Atticus Finch is strong in the way that he does not let small stuff get to him and mess with him and that he does not show weaknesses.
Atticus does not want his children to be hateful or mean to others just because they are different. He always says something that really gets to Scout or Jem and changes their point of view. Atticus knows that in order to succeed in life, you have to be kind and show compassion to others. Next, Atticus exemplifies compassion when Bob Ewell spits on him. Surprisingly enough, Atticus keeps his cool when Mr. Ewell spits on his face.
"It 's a sin to kill a mockingbird. " These words echo through the course of the book 's development. When these words were written, the idea raises that character in the story can be defined as mockingbirds. Looking through the narrative, one could find out the best candidates: Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Arthur "Boo" Radley. He knows that Atticus took a large risk when he took on the Tom Robinson case and Bob Ewell has made serious threats towards Atticus. The quote I chose for Bob Ewell was, “Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told
In “To Kill A Mockingbird” the charter I found most interesting is Atticus. Atticus has several qualities displays that he is an interesting character. Atticus is determined. An example of Atticus being determined is in the Tom Robinson trial. Atticus is also intelligent.
Atticus is one of the very few characters who never has to rethink his stand on a subject. Many of the other characters such as Mayella Ewell do not think about other people or the situation they are in when they say or do something. Atticus Finch is an admirable father for his morality, persistence, and for his wisdom. Atticus Finch presents this in the situations he is portrayed in, in To Kill a Mockingbird.
