Annotated Bibliography: The Chinese Exclusion Act

In the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, Chinese people immigrating to Canada were frequently denied the legal rights they deserved. The Chinese people immigrated over to Canada for a means of making money to support their families who were still in China. The Chinese were involved in the British Columbia gold rush and they helped with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 19th century. Between 1881 and 1884 alone, over 15, 000 Chinese immigrated to Canada. Some of the rights violations against the Chinese include being denied the right to vote, paying a head tax upon arrival to Canada, and being given the most dangerous spots on trains.

Hundreds and thousands of Native Americans, occupied many acres of land in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and Florida, and many more tribes were removed from their homes and marched along the thousand mile trail to what is now present-day

The trail of tears was a tretrous journey that the native Americans took. Because the Americans would promise land, then take it back. First off it was approximately one thousand miles. The five different tribes were the Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, and finally the Creek. They traveled from deep in the south to present day Oklahoma.

Trail of Tears, the journey of 900 Miles that took approximately nine months to complete. The Cherokee Indians and over 40 other groups or tribes traveled over land and water and were held in concentration camps along the way. The Cherokee traveled with military escorts. They left behind highly coveted land. The Environments of the Indians were not good for walking on the trail, the journey is long and and dangerous the weather was bad and many died.

President Andrew Jackson passed a law that stated the removal of the Cherokee Indians. They were forced to migrate elsewhere and leave their land. Their migration was called “The Trail of Tears” because of the negative effects it had on the Cherokees. It should not have happened and the U.S. should not have allowed it because it split apart people that were unified. They already had their own laws, and every clan was recognized.

Trail of Tears Native Americans have lived in the United States much longer than anyone of different decent. Way before Columbus ever thought about sailing the ocean blue the Cherokee tribe and others vacated the Southeast part of this country and it was rightfully their home. However they were kicked out from their homeland, where multiple generations of their families have lived for hundreds of years. This obscene removal is now known as the Trail of Tears, and this paper will demonstrate the impact it had on the Cherokee.

While they migrated, they had faced hunger, many deadly diseases, and much exhaustion. Over 4,000 out of the 15,000 that migrated had died. The Trail of Tears commemorates the suffering of the Cherokee people who were forced for removal, of where they had settled. In the 16th century, the Cherokee Indians were classified as the one of the most socially and culturally advanced Native American Tribes. The Trail of Tears forcefully removed the innocent Cherokee tribe from their homelands. In this paper, I will explain the how the Trail of Tears affected the Cherokee Indians. I will do this by explaining the Cherokee Indians life before, what happened during the Trail of Tears, and the Cherokee life after.

While making this gruesome travel more than 4,000 Indians died from disease, starvation and treacherous conditions. This travel became known as the “trails of tears”. These Native Americans were not how white settlement described them. Many of the tribes adopted Euro-american practices and created their own communities with schools and churches, even developed their own languages and created bilingual newspapers.

The Trail of Tears was ignominy in the history of United States. After President Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, the United States Military forced many Native American Tribes off their land. About 15,000 Cherokees were forced to leave from their land and this journey became to be known as “The Trail of Tears”. The Cherokees were forced because the greedy Americans wanted the land for agriculture and to grow cotton which would earn them a lot of money. The tribes were forced to moved westward from their ancestral land and settle in Oklahoma Territory.
